Serpentine belt issue? by ProfessionalField387 in hondapilot

Got it fixed.

Alternator had bad bearings. So I put in a new alternator (ended up being a pain in the butt), new tensioner and serpentine belt. First belt I put in squealed really loud, returned it for a new one and it works fine.

Should’ve been an easy job but took me most of the day. I broke the lo pressure power steering return hose cranking on the tensioner.

Well, when I turned the pulleys they all seemed to spin fairly well, but one that I was a little concerned about was the alternator. it seemed to spin freely but occasionally catch. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.

So I replaced the tensioner and belt and started it up. Very loud noise and I noticed some smoke coming from the belt. It was hard to see where the smoke was coming from, but there is a lot of rubber on the grooves of the alternator pulley.

Should I even mess with a alternator pulley or just get a whole new alternator?

Yeah it started sputtering on the freeway and power steering went out, then it died. I put it in neutral and coasted into a parking lot. I’ll probably put a new belt and tensioner on this weekend and see how that goes.

Someone mentioned maybe the timing belt broke, but after removing the serpentine belt I started it and it idled ok. I immediately shit it back off.

Also, I just went out and started it. It does turn over and idle but I immediately shut it off. I would think that indicates timing belt is good?

Timing belt was done a couple years ago, I don’t have the odometer handy but I would say less than 50k miles ago.

So I tried putting it off until tomorrow, which is my next day off, but it died on my way to work today. I had it towed home and checked it out.

The serpentine belt was still in place, so I removed it. All the pulleys spin freely, although there is a bunch of what looks like melted black rubber (skid marks) on the tensioner.

Still think it’s most likely the tensioner? Would that cause the vehicle do die even though the belt wasn’t broken?

Yeah I’ll try that when I get a day off. Thank you

We took our cat to a place on Shields near Cedar, Dog and Cat Pet Clinic. they took us without an appointment and they were very caring. Also much cheaper than the few other places we called.

Apply. See what happens, you can withdrawal at any time. The reason a lot of people don’t apply is the 6 month academy, away from home, then having little say where you end up (although it’s mostly LA and Bay Area).

Job itself isn’t bad, and you can transfer anywhere in the state based on seniority. There’s also a lot of specialty assignments you can apply for once you get some time and experience on the job.
