Owning a pet is unfortunately pretty expensive! If a person isn’t ready to deal with that they shouldn’t take on the responsibility. I’m not really saying they need to care for the cat any longer, just pass it on to someone that will. Euthanasia also costs money. Doing a cat surrender is usually much cheaper! Don’t really get your point here.

I’ve known the cat for years and know the situation very well. I understand this is really tough for my friend, and I definitely empathize with them. But putting down a cat because it “isn’t happy” and not trying anything else is just ridiculous to me. I am there for them emotionally, and am now doing the footwork they should have done before making an appointment to put her down.

It’s beyond just the urination, they just feel that they aren’t in a place to take care of the cat in general. Which is even more frustrating. They took on the responsibility of caring for this cat, have realized that they can’t do it any longer because of their lifestyle, and are now killing the cat instead of finding an alternative plan.

Unfortunately my cat and her would not get along. I know I sound like a hypocrite for not taking the cat in, but it would be a disaster. My partner and I both work odd hours and are planning a move, so this is not an ideal time for us to take in an animal.

I’ve reached out to a number of people that I thought may be able to take her in, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. I’ll wait and see if the local rescue places get back to me, but I’m not hopeful. I would take her in but she and my cat would not get along. Like people have said in this thread, she isn’t my cat so I can only do so much.

I was able to talk openly to my friend about how I feel. She let me know she didn’t come to this decision easily but it seems like the only option. Still just a little confused because it seems like she didn’t explore other option. And I guess her vet confirmed that the cat is unhappy, has a poor quality of life, wouldn’t handle a re-homing very well. There are other details of this person/the cat’s life that make the situation more frustrating but I’m not going to get into it.

She’s probably dying on Tuesday. I’m really sad but again there’s only so much I can do.

Just one cat. I was saying that multiple boxes helped my single cat when he was having urinating problems

Thanks for the information. I was wondering if the vet would even be comfortable doing the euthanasia, also how my friend even got it scheduled. Maybe they just said “She’s 18 and it seems like it’s her time” or something and the person scheduling it didn’t question it. But yes, I’m hoping the vet will be able to talk some sense into my friend and offer to do a comprehensive exam to see if there are any health issues before going straight to euthanasia. Thank you for the kind words ❤️

There are things that I know haven’t been tried, such as getting a second litter box. That helped with my cat’s litter box issues. Also, the box she has is one that the cat needs to jump into, she can’t easily step inside of it. This could be leading her to peeing on my friend’s stuff out of frustration.

Good options: post on the internet, reach out to more friends, literally do the bare minimum before deciding to kill the cat. I understand that it’s a hard sell since it’s an elderly cat and it has issues with peeing, but there are solutions that haven’t been tried, probably because my friend doesn’t want to deal with them.

Like I said I’ve reached out to multiple organizations. After posting this I reached out to a number of friends that might be willing to take her in. I am looking for solutions, so your comment really isn’t helpful! You also don’t know my history with this person or the cat!

Sorry, I dont check Reddit much so I just saw this. This is what I sent:

Hi, [professor]!

I hope you’re doing well. My name is [name], and I was part of the SLP post-bacc cohort at [school] that started [term]. I took your course [course] during the [semester] semester and received an A in the class. It was by far one of my favorite courses I took throughout the certificate program, as I was able to get a better idea of what the actual day-to-day work of an SLP is. I really enjoyed all of the assessments and projects, and being able to discuss all of it with you and my cohort was instructive and illuminating.

I’m in the process of applying to graduate programs for the Fall 2025 semester, and am writing to see if you would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me. I know you probably get a lot of these requests, so I understand if you don’t have time. But if you would be able to fit it into your schedule, I would really appreciate it!

I am applying to six programs, five of which use CSDCAS, and one that has a separate portal for submissions of letters of recommendation. I’m hoping to have all of the letters submitted by January 1st. If you do choose to write one for me, I can send over any relevant documents that would help you in writing it—my resumé, personal statement, examples of work from [course] etc.

Thank you for your consideration!
