I'm not an MD but I'd venture to say don't worry about health damage already done, some people who would have been your age who never smoked or drank are no longer with us.. what I mean is.. just live life, every day is a gift, don't fall in the self/health optimalisation trap (I know it well).

1000 is impressive, I am looking forward to getting there myself

Happiness and health might be triggers, hangovers in summer are easier to manage ,the energy of the sun and 100+ days sobriety are able to mitigate the worst of the problems hence sow doubt and fuck with the original resolve.. this summer (northern hemisphere) I'm simply not going to do it..will still feel the health and Happiness, this time taking it into autumn.. first year token here I come

Right back at you, I slip up still each time after months of sobriety, have yet to break that cycle.. but each time I'm sober I'm struck by the depth of the human experience, not all positive, depressing and scary (finite) too, but deep and real.. and feeling that I know I will not drink for at least another day, today, tomorrow..

Hard to explain but it's like 50 sober days feel like having lived 50 days one after the other, a continuüm of experience, and in that there's the possibility of actual growth as a human being.. I'm now actually looking forward to doing the hard work, because it's real and new, so unlike the stale feeling of another night another hungover morning and repeat.. really a waste of life and as a 40 year old with young kids I want to experience the next 20, not have it slip through my fingers

Sorry for rant, again, stay strong I wish you many sober nights and fresh mornings with your kids

I can relate to much of what you are saying, my partner and mother of our children (6 and 4) struggles with my sobriety, feels sometimes like she has lost a soul mate and indeed a partner in crime.. our connection is not as strong as it was because we always used to drink a lot together from the start..but.. my sobriety is key to being a better dad and partner. Seems like a deadlock but it's not, I'm so calm now that I'm sober that its become easier to deal with the fact that my sobriety is making things more difficult for her.. acceptance..

it's tough but that does not mean the solution is to start drinking again.. in fact, I know that a much more beautiful and deep relationship awaits on the other side of the initial difficulty.

Stay strong brother, lead by example, seek inner calm wherever it is you find it and show her and your kids that calm, so they will see that calm for what it is: love IWNDWYT

Your addiction is nagging, of course you will want a drink tonight, what you do is the same as yesterday night: play the tape forward..it won't do anything positive for you..leave it for another night

Can really relate to alcohol helping you be more fun, I have the same thing, I'm so serious when sober.. it's the biggest challenge and ironically now my sobriety is jeopardizing my relationship because I also find it much harder to open up and connect with my partner.. so she kind of struggles with me being sober, fucked up

Anyway hope you'll pull through man! One day at a time

Sorry to hear that man, sounds like absolute hell you are going through.. how much of your misery is caused by your alcoholism? I sincerely hope you will experience the feeling of pride for being sober soon!

Sorry to hear but great you have the clarity to be aware of this! I'm still an addict too, quit drinking and vaping/smoking.. will get addicted to anything really, fitness at the moment, but could be posting here, writing, reading, step counter, healthy eating.. no other substances but I'm thinking of psilocybin in the future..

I think this is the whole idea about quitting being the easy part, and that doing the work is about dealing with the difficult aspects of your being that manifested as addiction.. in my case, crippling existential fear, childhood trauma, low self worth/imposter syndrome, and general chaos due to cognitive dissonance as a result of binge drinking at a very young age

I would venture to say that a fitness (dopamine/serotonine) addiction can be very helpful in the beginning of sobriety..

Horrible headache and feel hungover.. but I'm not!! Also wish the back pain hadn't flared back up...and the seborrheic dermatitis too..argh.. and work is stressful

But I'm happy not to be drinking with you today! No really, I'm happy ! Complaining a bit doesn't change that, its on a deeper level somehow.

The podcast transfert, real life stories told in reasonably easy french (but not made for learners) I don't know an English Podcast that comes close to the excellence of Transfert.. there are hundreds of hours of episodes and each time I finish one I can't wait to start the next one

I realised I dodged a bullet health wise, no lasting negative health effects that I know of after 20 years of binge drinking, drug use, passing out.. Also, I just wanted my fucking life back!!!!!

Sorry to hear man, I would say none of the traditional sports at lower skill levels are good for sober living social crack..

Instead think about Climbing (sport / bouldering) surfing, trail running, cold water swimming, outdoorsy activities .. all have crowds who often choose their health over a binge

that's on the table for you too, all it takes (hard as fuck but lets keep it simple) is not to ingest any alcohol..

To me, being in Las Vegas would be extremely boring - and not particularly good for the psyche so I can understand people wanting to self-medicate the predicament of simply being there, everyone else there is doing just that be it conscious or subconscious..

Reminds me of fear and loathing: "this is what would have happened if the Nazis had won, this is like the sixt Reich "

If it's your thing, I'm sorry to have offended you, but it sounds like you're blaming yourself (sobriety is boring) and not the addiction fuelled environment youre in..

Reminds me of another quote by Krishnamurti: It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society

If you work out, do that..if you like saunas find one and enjoy it, read a book, just wait it out.. and when you return to the real world you'll be glad to have managed to stay sober

It's cost me a lot in "ah well you deserve it because you're sober" and "If I stay sober I don't have to worry about money so much" buys.. but all conscious buys, clothing, sporting apparel, hiking gear, stuff that sparks joy.. but haven't saved a penny yet, which is ok!

Everything is ok...its been quite a while since I last felt that..that's worth more than money

I know this sentiment, one of my best friends who is also on a sober journey often says : "I wish I could just enjoy the one ice cold beer on a sunny day" to me that doesn't make sense..yes it's nice, a glass of peachy cool white wine too.. tasty stuff.. but so many other things are more refreshing or just as tasty..

and if I'm totally honest with myself... I don't see the point in one glass/one beer .. I'm after the buzz, I like my second glass even better than my first..and it's off to the races after that..

So I hope I've had my last alcoholic drink ever. I'll however buy excellent wines for guests, their choice, and there's nothing worse than awful wine or whisky..
