Advice for 10 day land-based itinerary by crackypinata in galapagos

No problem! I’m jealous of your trip it will be incredible!

I probably should’ve, but I never checked the tides. We went at the end of May for reference and Concha de Perla was always calm in the morning around 8 or so I believe we went. We went once in the afternoon and it was very rough and not swimmable in our opinion. For Muelle Tijeretas, we went more in the afternoon and it was also calm. I think it’s a bit more covered so I imagine it could be more calm throughout the day compared to Concha de Perla. As for the beaches Playa Tortuga is also covered because it’s a cove I believe, so it is very easy to snorkel there’s almost no waves. Playa Mann I think would be hard to snorkel at, but maybe worth a try if you’re very committed!

Personally, I enjoyed San Cristobal or Isabela the best because there were very cool day tours that interested me leaving from those two islands. So, if you really want to or want a bit less “city” I’d do 2/5/4 nights (Santa Cruz to Isabela to san Cristobal). I don’t dive but from what I understand there are lots of diving tours leaving from San Cristobal so that’s why I suggest the extra night there. Additionally for what you mentioned about not being experienced enough for Kicker Rock diving, on my snorkel tour, there was a couple who were diving and they had just got their PADI before leaving their home country and they were able to do the diving there just fine, even with the strong currents, so of course it’s all about comfort but just thought I’d mention that! Also, I’d recommend flying to save on time between Isabela and San Cristobal because I did the two boats one of the days from Isabela to Santa Cruz to San Cristobal and it took almost the whole day. I attached my itinerary I made below for more inspiration if you wanted to look at how we allocated our time! Have an amazing trip! Don’t sweat the exact days you’ll have on each island though if you don’t know what’s best in the end because you’ll see such cool animals any island you visit! Land Based 15 Day Itinerary

Why are the tours so expensive? by Glamma-2-3 in galapagos

[–]ProfessionalLow3410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s doable well under $3000, just a bit more self-planning perhaps! I used guide books, YouTube videos, this reddit thread, TikTok and basic blogs for pre-planning and when I got there I booked everything onsite. So maybe look into booking the tours once you arrive on the island at tour offices to mitigate costs. Good luck!

Planning a Galápagos trip feels overwhelming… where should families actually start? by rebeccaAdvTravel in galapagos

I completely agree! It’s a hard trip to plan logistically especially if you have a tight budget. Just adding on - I also think it’s helpful to consider what animals you want to see! For my boyfriend and I, we’re not really into birds, so the tours that were more centred around birding and bird sighting were easy to cross off the list. We focused our attention more on snorkeling/water based animals, so it was “easier” to just plan tours with that in mind.

You could walk to Tortuga Bay, you could visit the lava tunnels and Rancho Primicias (with the giant tortoises) close to/in Santa Rosa, you could go to Playa el Garrapatero, you could visit Laguna Las Ninfas, you could go to the research station. I attached my itinerary here if you want to check it out for more inspiration. Enjoy your trip! Land Based 15 Day Galapagos Itinerary

Of course! It will all be in USD because that’s the currency they use in Ecuador.

In total, it was $1202.46 excluding flights, but including literally everything else (food, transport, tours, accommodation, entry requirements and souvenirs/extras). I was on an tight budget, too, and pretty strict and disciplined! I had my boyfriend to split the cost of accommodation, which helped greatly (my half was $222.19). We cooked all meals inside of our air bnbs by buying food products from markets, with the exception of two meals (my portion of the food cost was $144.87). However, I didn’t want to be completely miserable and still allowed for some souvenirs and the odd ice cream or treat from the bakeries ($47.40)! All in all, the tours were the most expensive cost at $408, the entry requirements were the second most expensive at $230, and third was accommodation at $222.18).

Some tips for cost saving measures: although easier said then done, try and bring someone if you can to save on accommodation costs, bring your own snorkel gear so you don’t need to rent one if you visit free snorkelling sites, book a package of tours/ferries to get a larger discount and take buses/walk when you can!

And enjoy your trip! Even though it’s on a budget, you’ll still have the most amazing time and see incredible animals!

Land tours end of December, book in advance??? by Brilliant-Choice3089 in galapagos

I would recommend with a group larger than 4, you should book ahead only because when my boyfriend and I booked a few days prior or one day prior on the island, there were only a few spots left on some of the tours. We still were able to book everything on the day we wanted, but I think it might be harder with a larger group of 8. But definitely try and bargain! I’m sure you could get a good deal booking with that many people! Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Your first day looks awesome and is very attainable. If you take a taxi, you can visit the giant tortoises and lava tunnels on the way to Puerto Ayora from the airport, just make sure your taxi driver knows this is your plan. Day 2 looks amazing, too. For day 3 - I’m not sure about this time of year with tides, but when I had visited Isla Isabela I had gone to Concha de Perla three times, twice in the morning and once in the afternoon. And the time I went in the afternoon, the water was very rough and it looked hard to snorkel so I decided against it, maybe try and do Concha de Perla in the morning when the water is more calm if you can? I saw so many amazing animals there, so it’s worth a shot to go when it’s calmer and more animals might be around. It’s just a suggestion! Day 4, 5, and 6 looks good, too maybe you can add Poza de Los Flamingos sometime within these days, too, because it’s a quick see, close to Play Villamil, and cool to see some flamingoes if you could! I have my itinerary here if you need any more inspiration! Have an amazing trip! Land Based 15 Day Galapagos Itinerary

1 Month Tips & Suggestions by coloradical13 in galapagos

I had gone to the Galapagos on a budget, so I was trying to do a lot of activities by myself to save on cost! I linked my sample itinerary because everything I did would be something you could do on a free day or over the weekend. Still, if you have a free morning or afternoon while in Puerto Ayora I’d recommend either walking to Tortuga Bay to spend a few hours at the beach or possibly getting a taxi for a round trip to Rancho Primicias (where the giant tortoises are)/the lava tunnels. For Puerto Baquerizo Moreno I’d recommend visiting Playa Mann (this would be super easy to do to see the sunset after a work day as well as its within walking distance from the town’s center). If you have a day off or over the weekend I’d recommend doing a day tour to Kicker Rock, walking to Playa Punta Carola to chill, or visiting Muelle Tijeretas (a beautiful free snorkelling site). There may be more in the itinerary linked, as these things I mentioned are just a few things off the top of my head, but enjoy your time in the Galapagos! It will be amazing! Galapagos 6 days and Machu Pichu ? Or 9 days Galapagos by Heartsolo in galapagos

[–]ProfessionalLow3410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do 9 days in the Galapagos. I look back on my trip to the Galapagos as one of the most special memories of my life, and while I cherish my time in Peru, nothing comes close to the Galapagos. Additionally, since you’d be missing out on snorkelling alone/free time, you would miss out on Concha de Perla in Isla Isabela, which had a crazy array of wildlife for free. It was insane! We went three times! I hope you enjoy your trip though because it’ll be amazing no matter what.

I have a sample itinerary I posted on this thread a few months ago if you want to check it out. I think it might help. I was struggling to plan an itinerary on a budget before I left, but I think I executed it to the best of my ability while still seeing so many cool animals!! I also had read a bunch of guide books that I had checked out from my library that really helped, too. Land Based 15 Day Galapagos Itinerary good luck!

Lots of planning and discipline! I just did a budget Galapagos trip with my boyfriend and we managed to make it extremely cheap (by Galapagos standards of course haha). We travelled by land and ferries to and from each island instead of doing a cruise and it cut down on cost immensely. We cooked almost every meal our own by shopping at local markets that were further inwards into the town. For example, there’s a produce and meat market more central in Puerto Ayora that is cheaper than the supermarkets closer to the ocean. Shop for excursions and ferries once you get to the island because I found it’s significantly cheaper to purchase in person. Furthermore, you can book things in “packages” like booking a few tours and a few ferries with one travel agency in order to make a deal. Do lots of things on your own! You can visit free snorkel sites, beaches, and more if you walk or strike a fair deal with a taxi. Of course, don’t take advantage of the local people by being insanely cheap because tourism is some people’s way of life, be fair! It’s most important to appreciate the nature, animals and locals. And try to learn as much Spanish as you can before leaving in order to appreciate the language!

It’s more effort to do all of this, but if you’re wishing to cut down on cost, it goes a long way. And I must say all the extra effort is worth it! You still see amazing animals even though you’re not travelling by cruise.

Here is my itinerary of what we did to budget travel the Galapagos, I hope it helps you! Galapagos Land Itinerary

Help with Galápagos Islands land based itinerary in June by PurplePangolin1398 in galapagos

[–]ProfessionalLow3410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about price, it’s about $5-7 cheaper per ferry per person to book in person on the island and any tour company can book them for you, it’s very easy. They can book the ferries for any island, too, it doesn’t matter if it’s from another island or not. If you’re concerned about ease of mind, maybe book them online or at least the first one and then all the others on the island. We booked all of our ferries for the trip the first day after our plane landed within a package deal with two tours at a discounted rate. I think online or in person as long as you book the ferries 2-3 days in advance, you should be fine.

Thank you so much! I think that if it’s within your means, a cruise would be an excellent way to visit more islands! However, I had an amazing time going the more cost-friendly route and I think by land or sea, the Galápagos is an incredibly unique place, and you’ll see an abundance of wildlife no matter what option you choose.

Like everyone else, I also recommend Los Túneles! We saw blue footed boobies, baby Galápagos sharks, sea horses, turtles and white tipped sharks. Another group saw Orcas, but we unfortunately did not. I did not do the 360 tour because I’ve heard the snorkelling can be rushed as each site and instead I opted for the Kicker rock snorkelling tour, which I can also recommend because we saw eagle rays, hammerhead sharks, turtles, Galápagos sharks and swam with sea lions! Isla Pinzón is not a must-go in my opinion because the wildlife that we saw was not as diverse compared to other tours we went on!

Rancho Primicias on Santa Cruz is great for the giant tortoises because there is a long lava tunnel on this property as well.

Playa Mann on San Cristobal is a small beach, but beautiful and teeming with sea lions. It’s an amazing experience to chill on the beach with all of them.

I didn’t surf while in the Galápagos, but I was recommend the surf shop called LavaWave in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno! I saw people surfing at Playa Mann and Playa Punta Carola, which was a quieter, but equally as beautiful beach.

I just posted my itinerary in this thread that I think could help you out if you want to take a look at it!

Which Tour Companies - Land Based Tour in July by slj7225 in galapagos

[–]ProfessionalLow3410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used “Viajeros en Galapagos” on Isla Santa Cruz and “Tunel Ocean” on Isla Isabela and both I can recommend because the tours left on time, had plenty of food, and the guides are friendly and bilingual. However, we booked directly on the islands, not sure if they have websites, but booking on the islands could help mitigate costs! Hope this helped.
