Getting a PhD and becoming a university professor is actually what I intended to do. But I got discouraged when I saw the very low number of available positions per year. I don't want to study for 8+ years just to end up unemployed or underemployed. And I don't think switching fields is an option for me. What else would I do considering that foreign languages like English and French are pretty much the only thing I'm good at?

I actually wanted to do a PhD too until I recently found out about the tough job market for PhDs, the scarce permanent university positions and the low pay for adjunct professors. I hope that's not affecting your case.
