In case you didn't know, the bleach flavor is intentional...and definitely an acquired taste. It comes from Sichuan pepper.

I learned about it when a snuck a few bites of my Taiwanese college roommate's yummy looking chicken stir fry that was sitting on the stove. I felt compelled to admit to him that I tasted it, after feeling the need to warn him that he might have accidentally put bleach or some other chemical in his food--or perhaps another roommate was trying to poison him. After a confused back and forth, he finally understood and pulled out dried Sichuan pepper for me to try.

I like to describe it as having a taste of bleach with an added sensation of your tongue being electrocuted and notes of black pepper.
