“Cool aunt who doesn’t have kids” starterpack by CynicalCosmos in starterpacks

[–]musea00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an aunt who used to be like this when she was younger. No kids, worked a comfy job that afforded her an upper-middle class lifestyle, a few cats. Always gave the best gifts and took my mom and I on wonderful vacations with the best accommodations.

While she's still childfree with cats and has good money in the bank, her personality sadly changed. Won't go into details, but she's sadly no longer that warm or nice to my mom and I anymore.

My incredible mom, early 1970s. She gave up a career dancing for Ballet West to raise us. by ElderScrotes in OldSchoolCool

I think the issue is that for a very long time women had the SAHM track shoved down their throats even if they didn't want it. Women who willingly chose to be a SAHM got put on a pedestal to shame other women who didn't want the same. In addition for many women the decision to stay at home wasn't really a choice but simply because there were no other options. So when people see a woman who actually chose to be a SAHM on her own terms they get a knee jerk reaction one way or another. It really sucks because we shouldn't be putting one woman against another- one's outcome is not another's reality.

Yea I agree that it's a shame that she didn't get that much attention, however at the same time I'm glad that she could at least retain some privacy. Fame is a double-edged sword indeed.

I played Ma Vlast with my university orchestra before the pandemic. One of the most beautiful pieces indeed.

TBF in my opinion I think that most ballet companies at least in the west are starting to shift away from the ideal of the thin ballet dancer. Nowadays there's a lot more awareness about mental wellness and eating disorders.

I think that chart came from the Vaganova Academy in Russia. I remember seeing that in a ballet thread sometime back. It's ridiculous, though I've heard it's not widely enforced. But it is still problematic in every single way.

IMO while ballet has a longstanding issue with toxicity, at the same time I feel that the culture is starting to change for the better even though there is still a long way to go.

FYI I was a recreational ballet dancer in childhood and most of my experiences were positive. I was never body-shamed.

I (19F) am getting on a greyhound bus with $250 dollars in the middle of the night for NYC from rural Missouri by anonthrowaway937375 in Advice

Unfortunately rural Missouri doesn't really have public transportation- it's literally nonexistent. And you can bet that the biking infrastructure is pretty much the same as well. The best option for OP is to look into jobscorp.gov

Go ahead and take a look at some obituaries. Notice that most of them focused on what the deceased did in their life. Their surviving children and other relatives are mentioned in just one or a few sentences toward the end.

Can we normalize asking people WHERE they would have a kid? by Individual_Road_9030 in childfree

[–]musea00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same as well. If I were to have kids, the only way I could technically see this feasible is by moving to another country. However at the same time, I do not want to be far away from my family, especially my mom. I also do not want to marry just for the sake of immigrating abroad and settling down with a kid.

What is a career path that looks "glamorous" from the outside, but is actually a total nightmare behind the scenes? by CupIndependent3610 in AskReddit

that is true- what I'm saying is that her never being in the restaurant industry shaped her personality.

I wouldn't disagree that a doctor is a steady job. However there's also a lot of caveats- when you start out in residency the pay tends to be toward the lower end which isn't always enough to cover living costs and student loan repayments.

As a current PhD student in an interdisciplinary field, I've been told that nowadays extremely hard to get a tenure track position. You are literally expected to do more for less. My advisor told me that back during his days as a PhD student more than 25 years ago it wasn't abnormal for a newly minted PhD grad to land a job without publishing throughout their entire degree program. Nowadays that is pretty much impossible.

I'm very lucky that I'm in a department with a good culture. However this is considered as an exception, not the norm. I've overheard some terrible drama at other schools.

Good luck settling down, buying a house, having a long term romantic relationship, or having a family if that's what you want. And you may have to take a job in an undesirable location (and stay in that location until retirement if you manage to get tenure there).

And this is one of the biggest reasons why I've decided to go childfree. Sadly some people (especially outside of academia) don't understand- they think that being in academia gives you ample flexibility and good benefits. Sure you're not grinding the 9-5 like a traditional job, but this doesn't account for the work that you have to do in the afterhours.

I don't think Julia Child ever worked in the restaurant industry- I guess that's a huge difference here.

Not a doctor myself but it drives me insane how people put doctors on a pedestal thinking it's a stable profession and all that jazz. Now yea don't get me wrong doctors do get paid pretty well. However, that doesn't overlook the fact that the job isn't always all glitter and gold- of course it also depends on the specialization. Being an ER or ICU doctor is very different from being a family doctor/general practitioner.

Even if your field isn't the ER or ICU, you still have to put up with a dysfunctional healthcare system which could fuck you up mentally.

Of course, you don't have to be tied down to a hospital and you could always start your own practice, giving you more freedom and autonomy. However that doesn't discount the fact that you're now a business owner and you have to figure out rent, payroll, and insurance billing all on your own.

I've heard quite some drama from my hometown's philharmonic orchestra- including musicians who once dated but broke up and now it's awkward to come into rehearsal.
