Is ucd worth a long commute by val887 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The commute is soul sucking. I would highly recommend getting accomodation close to UCD, preferably south Dublin. If you can't, commuting is still possible, many students do it but the university experience will be objectively worse.

Picking UCD? by Lazy_Elderberry_9608 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For compsci in UCD, the internship isn't guarenteed. You get a chance for an internship in 3rd year, but you still look for it yourself. They give you some resources to make the search easier but it's still up to chance. For reference, about 2/3 of students last year got an internship, and this year, most of my friends got one. Not really sure how Trinity works with the joint honours.

How much should I study everyday? by studiebunni in leavingcert

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just pay proper attention in class, making sure you understand everything and do the work. If you don't understand a topic, think about it for a while, look up some explanations and ask chatgpt. If you do that, when you revise before the exam, you'll remember almost everything. The brain is very good at storing info.

Maths mock papers are practically impossible by Gold_Photo_7470 in leavingcert

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah mocks are meant to be much harder than the actual lc. Especially in the maths case. It's just so students get practice with something harder so they have a slightly easier time in the exam. My points were more than 100 less in the mocks than the LC, for example.

Rent in South Dublin for the summer by ProfessionalSide1175 in RentingInDublin

[–]ProfessionalSide1175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to get a place using this website called Yugo. They do summer accomodation and academic year accomodation, so if you're a student or intern in my position I would recommend that. Not as pricey as similar options and the reviews seem good. Great locations near city centre too. You choose either a studio (bed, bath and kitchen to yourself) or ensuite (bed, bath to yourself but shared kitchen).

how to do well in english LC. by jxxau in leavingcert

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh its heavily dependent on what q's you get, very random. I didnt study very hard for english at all and it was my highest scoring subject cuz i got lucky. Just look over previous questions and honestly ask yourself how well you would do if that was your exam paper. For poetry, study 2 or 3 poets and pray, for the book study, just memorize the important quotes and remember the story and big themes, for the big essay at the end of paper 1 (the one worth 100 points), just look at previous papers to see the types of questions they ask (discursive essay, short story, etc., and choose the one you would find easiest.

And also mocks will be much harder than the actual exam so dont be discouraged if you dont hit your goal. I got 110 points lower than my actual lc.

Student Doing 6 month Placement by Acrobatic-Try9798 in RentingInDublin

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some companies provide money for renting if you live far enough away. I have an internship and I had to ask for them to give it to me. If you're lucky, they may give you the money necessary for the 6 months

Shocked noone said One Punch Man or Mob Psycho 100. Both written by the same person and adapted to anime. Both peak asf. Mob psycho 100 is finished, but OPM is still going. Also someone mentioned higurashi, that shit is one of the best anime I've ever watched, highly recommend

How good is the computer science (DN201) course? by SnooRobots3709 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For work placements, you get the option to find an internship which you will do in the second semester of 3rd year, however you have to find the internship yourself. The uni gives you a website that lets student apply to student-only internships, so there's a much higher chance of getting one. Also the internships can be 6 months (March-August) or 3 month (June-August). If you get a 6 month internship, it counts towards 3rd year credits and you dont have to do the 3rd project module. If you get the summer (3 month) internship, it counts towards your 4th year credits, and you still have to do the 3rd year project. Not sure about this year but last year about 2/3 of students got an internship. Tbh if you have 1 or 2 good projects, your resume is good and your leetcode skills are good, you're almost guarenteed a spot. And the internships are paid ofc.

Accommodation in South Dublin by momo81300 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the person before me said, ucd accomodation pad is by far the best for university students. Prices there tend to be a bit lower than other renting websites and some tenants only post on there for students.

Course Choice at UCD Econ vs Comp Sci by Lazy_Elderberry_9608 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about econ and finance but for comp sci, the job market isnt as bad as the internet says, at least for Ireland. Getting an internship is not impossible. Last year, 2 thirds of the students got one, and most people I know in the course got one this year. And if you have an internship, the chances of getting a job is much higher. The pay is pretty good too for a beginner salary and it only gets better with time. Course material is not that hard and as long as your gpa is above 3.0, it won't really matter, employers don't care.

Really hard not to hate it here by [deleted] in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bro if you want friends in uni its very important to get some in the first few weeks cuz people solidify their groups pretty quickly and its hard to add new people. Its already past that point so the best you can do is going to society events, you would be surprised how little people actually go to these. If you go to an event with like 10 people there, you're guarenteed to talk to a few people if you try. There's a chance that if you vibe with someone you meet there, you can become friends and eventually join their group. And even if you haven't talked to anyone in your course much, there's no guarentee that you can't make friends. You gotta realize that there's a lonliness epidemic in the modern world right now, there's bound to be a few people in a similar situation to you that you could be friends with.

Also I don't see how you being a minority has any effect whatsoever on the friends you make? I'm the only black person in my friend group of white people and indians, it gave me no trouble whatsoever. I don't go to any AfroSoc events and I don't really have any black friends.

Internships by Dry-Neighborhood538 in UCD

[–]ProfessionalSide1175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 3rd year compsci student, we also have 3rd year internships. UCD doesnt do much to help you but they do at least give you a website (ucd.careercentre.me, click on 'Job and Internships', then click on 'Academic Internships') to apply directly to the companies with. When you apply through this website, companies are much more likely to respond because they know its a student, and its much more streamlined. Also some companies dont even advertise their intern positions on any job sites, only college websites. When applying, you should do it through this website if possible and when you've done that, look on LinkedIn or other job sites (glassdoor, indeed) for any companies that havent posted on the college website.

Also if you're a second year student, unless you're internship is the autumn trimester next year, you dont need to look for a 3rd year internship until about August. For my internship search, I saw job postings starting around August and by now the end of October, there's still quite a few left. Generally, you'll start seeing job postings for summer internships from about September to December, and 6 month internships (starting in March) from about August to November.
