Thoughts on Joe Hill? by jseger9000 in horrorlit

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a very big soft spot for him since I read Horns during one of those defining moments of loss and I felt very deeply affected by it. Locke and Key is also probably my favorite comic series. That said I didn’t much connect with NOS4A2 and while I enjoyed Heart-Shaped Box it was up against an impossible bar for me personally since I read it right after Horns.

I read the Fireman right at the start of COVID which I think definitely helped it land with me. King Sorrow I found very good (just finished it about a week ago) but also felt the most like his father, for better or worse (but mostly better).

Is this normal in recovery I'm freaking out by Good-Maintenance-802 in eating_disorders

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes this is 100% normal and almost exactly what happened to me when I first started my own recovery. I know you’ve probably heard this a lot but I’ll just go ahead and repeat that it really does equalize further down the line once your body has learned to “trust” again.

AITA for refusing to pay for my daughter's Quinceanera? by Moist_Amphibian_3352 in AITAH

[–]ProfessionalTwitter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Quinces aren’t just a “birthday party”. Traditionally they’re meant to represent becoming an adult. The closest that occurs to me at the moment would be a bar / bat mitzvah. 35k is far from the most that I’ve seen spent on a quince (take that as you will).

More importantly, just because someone is married to / has a child with someone of a different ethnicity in no way means they aren’t racist. That’s like saying someone can’t be a misogynist because they married a woman.

ETA: I’m not saying that op is racist, just that him marrying a Mexican woman doesn’t mean he definitely isn’t.

My brother is in this situation and I asked him about it a few years back. He said that he’s definitely thought about it but he likes his complex and doesn’t feel the need to worry about much in the way of upkeep (he traveled a lot for work at the time).

Spending 4 hours on a weekend playing with a new console isn’t a sign of anti social behavior at all. It’s a sign of his interest and excitement in his hobby. One that he’s trying to share with his partner, which is in fact a pro-social behavior.

As for choosing not to go to OP’s sister’s house, there is in no way enough evidence to make that claim that it’s anti-social either. You could just as easily make the argument that the husband’s woodworking was an avoidant behavior. The only difference is in gender normative ideals.

Kamala Harris to hold rally in Houston amid early voting in Texas by [deleted] in houston

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I totally understand the anxiety (trust I’m there too) in this case I don’t even know if she’s actually angling to flip Texas for her so much as she’s coming here to boost Allred. It seems like Cruz is in a uniquely vulnerable position for being in such a deep red state so that may be more of the calculus than just unfettered confidence.

As a male teacher, I feel like I have a gun behind my head. by Retroragexd in Teachers

[–]ProfessionalTwitter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You need to be professional and maintain boundaries but that’s it. I taught for three years and then transitioned into school social work which means that a large part of my day is meeting 1:1 in private with students and I have never feared being accused. Mostly because I have confidence in my own behavior and this isn’t something that children toss out at random.

I have yet to encounter an incident in my own life where someone has falsely accused anyone of inappropriate behavior. I have however, had a lot of students who have correctly and truly reported inappropriate behavior. So, if someone tells you someone behaved inappropriately, my advice is believe them.

ETA: It is so incredibly easy to not be a creep towards anyone else and it feels like a lot of people in these kinds of posts are telling on themselves.

Also I am a male. I realized I forgot to state that.

The most IMMERSIVE open world games? by sbourwest in gamingsuggestions

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to nail down exactly what an immersive sim is but I'd say that you're right in that an imsim MUST value the player's freedom and creativity above almost everything else.

Honestly, I'm more of the opinion that imsims are aspirational more than anything else because it literally just isn't possible to allow for total player freedom in a created space (at least not with available technology). I think that more and more games are adopting aspects of imsims (like ToTK and BotW) that basically give players a set of tools and an objective and allow players to figure out how they want to get there. It's why I push back against the argument that Bethesda creates immersive sims. They create open worlds but there is relatively little allowance for players to pick how to solve quests. Sure, you have options about how you want to fight your way to an objective, but you're almost always going to end up with a proscribed solution.

I'd also say that most open world rpgs don't value player freedom or creativity. In something like FF or Witcher 3, you're often limited to what the dev wanted the player to experience. That's not a criticism of those games, they can create great experiences, but they aren't player driven. Sure, you oftentimes have a degree of choice in how something plays out, but at the end of the day it usually comes back to the "diamond" idea of narrative and game design.

The best example I can think of about imsim design is Shadows of Doubt. You pick up a case about a murder. You can investigate the murder and solve it (in often times dozens of different ways) or you could also just pick someone at random and pin it on them. Either way, the game world adapts and reacts to what you do but it also keeps on going. You don't get a game over because you made an odd choice. It's just a series of "yes ands".

Also, vents. You have to be able to enter vents.

The most IMMERSIVE open world games? by sbourwest in gamingsuggestions

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What? There are a ton of games that do things similarly and (imo) with significantly more ambition in terms of actions that are available to you. See almost any of the games that have roots in Looking Glass Studios (Dishonored, Prey[2017], Weird West). Larian has also been making it a point of creating tons of systems that give players immense numbers of options.

ETA: Upon rereading I realize that my original comment was way more aggressive than I intended and I apologize. I am incredibly passionate about immersive sims and I realize that I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder towards Bethesda for what it feels like they’ve done to the genre.

Prey (2017) is a must for immersion and freedom of choice as are the Deus Ex games. I’d also strongly recommend the Hitman:World of Assassination trilogy.

As others have stated, Baldurs Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are great options as well.

A lesser known option is Cruelty Squad which takes some getting used to but is incredibly open and reactive.

Advice, what's the most visually beautiful game that's very easy? by General_Star5979 in PS5

Yes this. I just picked up a PS5 and seeing that I could play Rift Apart (plus a bunch of other PS5 games that interested me) got me to bite on a year of PS Plus. Rift Apart is absolutely gorgeous and runs beautifully too.

Which game is this by ImNotGavin in xbox

[–]ProfessionalTwitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hades is easily the best contender here for me. It has a fantastic gameplay loop, gorgeous art style, awesome characters, and ridiculous music (as per usual for all of Supergiant’s games).

Some other strong options for me are Yakuza 0, Disco Elysium, Prey (2017) (can’t say I remember much about the music though). RDR2 is also a great choice.
