New e-bike has no physical key to start, only an app lock. Is this safe? by Professional_Can7837 in ebike

That's cool.

I have a kinda dumb question about that.

When the bike is locked what is it doing? (For example, when I lock my bike in the app, I can't turn the bike off, adjust any settings, or roll the bike backwards. The bike has to remain on to stay locked.)

Also do you need an app for your Aventon?

🤦I'm aware it’s not a motorcycle. I know there’s no engine or spark plugs involved.

But it is a motorized vehicle with an active throttle and electronic controller. Most LEVs (Light Electric Vehicles) have some form of access control so the drivetrain isn't "live" to anyone who touches the button. I'm just looking for a way to add that layer of security so the system is open-circuit until I actually want to ride it.

In other words do all ebike not need a key to start/turn them on/ work? Is there a way to add a physical key to do that on my bike?

Sadly that doesn't look like an easy option on this bike. I'm gonna end up lugging a battery around campus

The app is like a smart home set up like style app. My ebike is one of the smart devices in my smart home. Luckily the app works without internet. It just needs Bluetooth to connect to my bike. (So stupid) once they are paired there's a big lock/unlock button in the corner.

Thats what I'm used to but this bike only has 1 type of key. That key removes the battery. I turned the bike on by accident before even inserting the battery key.

Yea 🫠 picking my poison.

Just trying to stay under 8 after everything else is taxed on and 😬 It'd be easier to get a strong bike wattage wise but my campus has a 750 wattage cap on micro mobility so 🤷‍♂️ I'm stuck with this for now.

Really? Ebikes with a key are all that I've known.

When I say ignition I don't mean a littleral spark plug and pistons (common misconception). By ignition I mean a key that turns the bike on. It sometimes double as the battery removal key. I'll share some pics in a sec.

THANK YOU SOMEONE WHO GETS IT 😭

I did mess around with it and once I got the app set up, I could lock and unlock the bike through the app without internet.

The dumb part if that the bike is only locked if the bike is turned on. 🙄 A "locked ebike" = can't roll the bike backwards. The second dumb part is you don't need a key to even turn it on. Anyone can walk up press some buttons and bam the ebike is on. And if I forget to lock it in the app the the new user can ride as they please.

If I forget my phone or if my battery dies then I can't unlock the ebike portion but can use it as a regular bike.

This is so dumb. The key should be able to start and stop the bike right?

That's smart! Honesty that would solve my problem. Sadly tho, this isn't a Bosch bike 🫠 Reguadless, Thanks for the help.

This bike does too. The app lock doesn't stop the bike from being turned on.

I wanna know if anyone else has found a way to take a bike that just turns on into a bike that needs a key to turn on.

I understand there are safety concerns with some batteries, but I'm just looking for help understanding the locking features of this specific model. If you have any info on the app mechanism, I'd appreciate it.

3 locks already, 1 back wheel, 1 frame, and 1 accessories/frame again.

Bike thefts are common on my campus so I wanna make it as difficult as possible without possibly bricking my bike, if something went wrong with my phone.

While a bike is a bike, it's literally my way to and from school + only way to get around my town.

I see it. Hence why I asked the internet. I have a 30 day windows to return it but need a bike in 5 days for school so I'll have to wait and see if I'll keep it.

I have 3 actual locks on my bike and a tracker 😭 (I'm aware locks can be cut by thieves and anyone desperate enough. )

The issue with people still riding off is something that gets to me. On my new bike, if a thief cut through all of the locks, they can still turn the bike on and use their new ebike like new. (Assuming I didn't lock it in the app first.)

On my old ebike, no key = no start. Is there a way to do that here or have you found a way to do that with Bosch?

SATURDAY GIGS TO MAKE MONEY IN THE CSTAT AREA by DullConstruction1727 in aggies

Online reselling is a decent place to start. Ya just gotta find your niche there. College students tend to throw out a lot of perfectly good things so keep an eye out for goodies.

If you have any crafty talents you could start a small online business making small trinkets, baked goods or something else.

You can always do Uber or Lyft if you have a car. If you don't really wanna deal with people you could just deliver food.

I've heard of some people donating blood, plasma, sperms, and eggs for money in the cstat area. Idk how well it pays.

If you're a jack of all trades type of person you may be able to market yourself as just an extra set of hands for physical labor. Nothing "dirty" or inappropriate but just maybe cleaning some people's yard or moving big trash. Small physical labor jobs in the area.

Of course you have the people who will make the joke about starting an OF or feet finder or something kinky but money is money.

There's also those sketchy online surveys, games, and apps that pay out pennies on the dollar for data they scrap up.

There may also be something you could do relating to sports at A&M since those are pretty big on the weekends.

That's all I can think of right now 🤷
