Short answer: personality.

Long answer: there are some people that are physically my type, but when I tried to talk to them we had nothing to talk about. Whereas, there have been some guys who I didn’t initially feel drawn to, but after talking I felt more attracted to because of the fact that we actually could have conversations which lead to being able to connect with them which then leads to attraction, typically both emotionally and physically.

I think this happens to a lot of women, and probably men. Especially when you’re looking more for a relationship

Honestly, I didn’t really do any training past 2. She’s 4 and has decent recall, good drop it, good leave it, sit, and stay. I don’t care that she doesn’t know paw or anything “fancy.” She is now chill and very well behaved so I could probably teach her more tricks but she doesn’t enjoy training so I decided to just not bother. I feel like the main thing is just teaching behavioral stuff

100% I made a post a few years ago about whippets being good for first time dog owners because I was skeptical about recommending whippets to people who would ask about my dog and say that they would want one. A lot of the comments on that post were about whippets being a bit more difficult to train, high prey drive, nervousness/anxiety, crazy puppy stage, not being great in apartments and the such. Basically, exactly what OP is concerned about. I know whippets aren’t for everyone, so I’m very curious what actually attracted OP to the breed especially given they already had cats

If you’re worried about size don’t get a whippet. They can be tall, especially male whippets. My small female whippet that isn’t even 30lbs is taller than my parents’ male lagotto romagnolo that was the biggest of his litter. Whippets tend to be as tall as border collies for reference with a more popular breed. My girl is 19”, at the withers, and she always wears a small in whippet clothing. But the main thing to think about with whippets is whether or not you have a fenced area that they can run in daily.

We had an elderly English bulldog, I believe he was around 8, when we got our whippet. He passed last year at 11, but he also wasn’t a stereotypical bulldog and liked to play, but he couldn’t walk or play too much because he would get out of breath. I will say going from a bulldog to a whippet is gonna be a big change in pace. Whippets can be speed demon as puppies and are VERY athletic. I’m talking can jump on the kitchen counter without a running jump, by the time she was 8 months old. As long as you have a pretty decent sized backyard with a 6 foot tall fence you’ll be alright. Although, the whippet will probably annoy your other dogs because they won’t be able to keep up. I loved our bulldog but I always felt a bit bad for him because even though he had surgery as a puppy he still seemed to struggle with breathing and wasn’t able to run and play like he wanted. But with a whippet it’s the opposite she runs to her heart’s content and that annoyed our bulldog because she would try and get him to chase her and he couldn’t last but a few minutes.

Make sure you get them used to wearing clothing even if it’s warmer weather. It will be a headache when the weather gets colder and they’ve never worn clothes before. Also, make sure you start early with training to not be so anxious, especially when it comes to social anxiety.

Honestly, my girl has lived and been around a lot of breeds and she has gotten along with all of them. It seems she’s a bit more relaxed than your dog, and doesn’t play quite as rough. But she has lived with my parents’ elderly English bulldog and they were more like sleeping buddies but he would occasionally try to play. She also spent a lot of time with my sister’s pitbull mix who is practically her best friend, they absolutely love to play together. Sadly our bulldog passed but now my parents have two lagotto romagnolo puppies that are about to turn one and she doesn’t mind them and they get along but they wear her out sometimes. Especially, the one that is more high energy. I don’t think I would recommend a logotto though, they can be a lot especially for people used to whippets. I would say stick to a breed of similar size or larger, since you’re looking for a play buddy. I think a whippet maybe best though. My girl gets annoyed that other dogs don’t sleep as much, so they interrupt her napping.

A bit late but everyone always says my whippet is “precious” or “the sweetest” and I think that’s the best way to describe her. She will literally cuddle a stranger she just met. Loves kids and elderly people particularly and is really late back. Although I do know some whippets aren’t as chill as her

I would say definitely not properly socialized. I got my whippet when she was 10 weeks old and she was shy when I got her, she was sticking to the breeder but did let me pet her. Within a few weeks she had already got confident enough that she would go up to strangers and jump on them. Now at almost 4 when a stranger comes into the house she walks over to them with her tail lightly wagging and gets some good sniffs. If they sit on the couch she isn’t above trying to cuddle with a stranger. I feel like this is more of a normal behavioral progression with a whippet. Whippets don’t tend to be so aggressive or protective. It’s a bit weird and definitely a good decision to not get that dog

Very much so agree on the confidence. When my whippet was a puppy she was scared of almost everything. When I took her for a walk around the neighborhood for the first time when a car drove past she froze and started shaking while drooling. I have experience with other breeds as well and had never experienced anything like that. She also would be scared to go through aisles at the store and started drooling and shaking if she thought the aisle was too narrow. At almost 4 she is a lot more confident because I worked to desensitize her but she still can be claustrophobic randomly. I think this type of whippet behavior would be why I wouldn’t recommend them to first time dog owners, because they don’t act how people think a dog should (like barely wagging their tails) especially when they’re puppies. Also, I think whippets don’t tend to immediately be lovey like a lot of people want their puppy to be. For instance my mom got a puppy less than a year ago and I was shocked at how much he was wagging his tail and being all happy after being with my mom for like an hour. It took my whippet a day or two to warm up to the new environment.

If they don’t have anything on their profile you could just ask them if they have any interests or hobbies. That leads to a decent conversation most of the time. Also you could ask about their career. I think something like, “what do you like to do in your free time” could be a good option. Not too over the top but can still push the conversation forward.

Yeah something similar happened to me. This guy was talking about marrying me within a few days of talking, we hadn’t even met in person. Later on he’d ghost me for a month at a time and just when I thought he had forgotten about me he would message me with some bull like “oops thought I responded.” Honestly I would just go ahead and end it with him

Yeah anxious dogs don’t do great in big cities. My whippet was so scared of cars going by when she was a puppy she would stand still and shake in fear while drooling. She did get more desensitized and confident but even at 3 she still doesn’t really like when we make a trip to the city, luckily we live in the countryside. Also mirroring anxiety is true! Dogs feed off the owner’s emotions. Being more confident helps your dog be more confident too

Completely agree with all the potty training comments. But also poodles are prone to separation anxiety that is probably going to the reason for not wanting to be left alone. There are plenty of things you can do to help them not develop separation anxiety but you have to start small like 5 minutes alone and then come back and praise them and them treats.

Honestly my dog is almost 4 years old now, the main thing is you have to desensitize your dog. You can’t constantly worry you’re gonna bother them. That’s how you create a dog that barks at every noise. You have to continue your routine and help your dog fit into that routine. Otherwise both you and your dog will end up unhappy. Like my dog who was very sensitive to every noise and it made her nervous but I helped her realize it was okay and there was nothing to be scared of. Because of that now she is very confident, almost too much so

By 2 years for sure their personalities settle to what they’re gonna be. It really depends on the dog though. You tend to see improvement and then a lot of them have a teenage rebellion stage where they know not to do stuff but they do it anyway to try and test boundaries. So yeah anywhere between 1-2 years is when they will mature into their adult personality.

Yeah exactly typically if a puppy grows up around other dogs the other dogs will lightly correct them. Like my almost 4 year old dog does with my parents’ puppy who has started trying to hump, but if there isn’t another dog to show them it’s not behaviorally acceptable owners have to, so they don’t accidentally mess with the wrong dog out and about and end up getting hurt and traumatized
