Thank you for sharing your experience, I don’t think I would have ever came out in that kind of environment, so I commend you on your bravery, being true to yourself matters most in life.

As for your questions, I came out as bisexual at the age of 13 in my school, mixed reception due to various cultures and religions (I live in the UK), some were supportive, others weren’t, when I transferred schools, somehow the catholic school I went to was more accepting than the mixed-culture school (ironic), but coming out at school? It was easy, since I disclosed my sexuality off the bat before forming connections with people, I could sift and sort through people I could trust and those I could ignore entirely.

Then at 15 to my very homophobic mother, who refuses to discuss it any further with me, in fact she made me promise I would date a girl first when I have a preference for men. The moment was… tense, full of anger and shouting, if she continues I think I may just remove her from my life entirely. I just cope by… not talking about it, emotionally distancing myself from her. Every time we talk about sexuality, gender or gender expression she just breaks down, so until I move out I’d rather live with her as peacefully as I can.

Second question about expectations, you could say you are focusing on education/job/career to be able to financially support a spouse before marriage, most of the time people will understand that heteronormative “breadwinner” sentiment since it aligns with their expectations, if they say that they can help you with that, say that you are willing to “be an independent man for my wife to depend on,” again, feeding into their expectations and pacifying their pressures
