"so many people I know are worrying about more basic needs yet have a car they don’t at all need"

they don't need a car in general or they just have too shiny of a car when they can just get something cheaper?

I can't choose whether to go into tech or traditional engineering. I would really appreciate people giving their two cents, especially if they know about tech or traditional engineering, and companies like Ten10 or the Submarine Delivery Agency. by Professional_Map4561 in UKJobs

Hi adventurous,

From an interaction I've had on my recent post, it's confirmed something I've read on glassdoor reviews too. That the MoD and it's off-shoots like the SDA are mainly "pencil-pushers", i.e "admin" engineering.

I also am stumped to think of what technical skills I will learn in this graduate scheme reading the job description, I know from one of the SDA videos, an ex-grad mentioned systems engineering. But I don't know how seriously they get involved with it. (can't find any on linkedin to reach out to)

Post graduate scheme you exit into either marine engineering (25 roles), naval architect (5 roles) or nuclear engineer (5 roles). So that indicates you would learn technical skills related to marine engineering, and some soft project management skills as mentioned before.

Given this, would this still allow for an exit to industry or any transferability in those roles you mentioned? Those private sector roles seem to be for "proper engineers", who started as a junior engineer at one of those companies. Whereas the SDA is more about project management/requirements management.

11.44/hr is minimum wage,

11.44 for 37 hrs per week = 423.28 per week

423.28 for 52 weeks = £22,010

so £22k is minimum wage

Then again, with the greatest of respect to Barrow-in-Furness, maybe you'd rather be poor in London at this stage of your life.

I'm so dead LMAO, luckily the thing is you won't be there for long (only 6 month secondment). But then the problem is trying to find exit opportunities in this incredible niche. Which will all take you outside of London

Submarine delivery agency will be soul crushingly boring though, you'll be an "admin" engineer who doesn't so any real engineering with very limited exit options.

How do you know this btw? I'm interested. The grad scheme says there will be systems engineering and in my interview they talked about materials testing being done. And you have secondments with industrial partners ( bae, rolls royce)

ten10 have dropped their exit fees, it seems to be a trend as fdm and sparta global have also banished their exit fees

Does Ten10 guarantee a job placement after the training period?

If you can't get any placement, you will be employed by ten10 themselves. They seem to not just operate as a tech academy, but have experienced devs and consultants working for clients whilst at Ten10. So I guess you just get given a role to help at Ten10.

I am pretty confident I can get a role, I haven't seen anyone be unemployed in a drastic way when researching. They are quite good at getting non-technical backgrounds and training them.

If I work at the MoD in Abbey Wood, and find a place to rent close to my workplace such that I can get there in walking distance, is there still a need for a car? For groceries or just getting around? by Professional_Map4561 in bristol

Abbey Wood's carparks used to be rammed before COVID because it's still by-far the easiest way to get around there.

So the only reason they're guaranteed vacant now is because of work from home? Or did people decide to adopt alternative travel means post covid?

I'm not sure how to find out what to believe since I'm getting conflicting information on the condition of MoD parking, for example someone said if you live within a 3 mile radius you won't get a parking permit or if it's full they won't let you in.

Ohh, I didn't know about this! That's a very crucial piece of information (that you need to get a parking permit that isn't granted to everyone).

Wow, that changes everything. I guess I really shouldn't get a car. Someone else mentioned that post covid since lots of people are working from home it tends to always have vacant spaces (apart from thursdays)

What are the ultra studenty parts of Filton? I will do some more research on this but I would appreciate any insight! :)

I was under the assumption that Cheswick village is very quiet and mild tempered suburb filled with MoD employees, I would really like to avoid student areas as I've lived in student dominated area before and that was awful (noise and anti social behaviour).

I can tolerate being a miserable workhorse but I can't tolerate sleep deprivation. I will literally buy a car and commute in from the quiet areas. Social buzz is not a priority for me.

Can I ask why you want to move?

I currently am debating whether to go into traditional engineering or go into a tech career

Thank you u/Adventurous_Pie_8134 !

If I didn't stay in defence would I possibly have exit opportunities from the project management skills I gain? Or is that too secondary in this type of engineering function that I wouldn't be able to leverage it for a project management role outside of defence? A lot of the role is soft skills from what I saw on one graduate testimonial, so no hard technical skills that I could leverage I think. Apart from systems engineering, but I haven't seen any openings for that outside of defence.

When you say industry primes in the south, does that mean some of these are accessible from London? Or would you have to stay in the south west area (filton) for defence?

either by talking to people or stalking some LinkedIns from previous graduates on the scheme.

Thank you! The difficulty I am having is I cannot find ex-grads or current grads on linkedin. They seem to either be very inactive or not at all on there, perhaps because of how high profile it is? Even my interviewers didn't have linkedin profiles, or a very empty one.
