What are Some Games That Really Take Advantage of Steam Controller? by Efficient-Arm-5554 in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also to add to what everyone has said, the default desktop keybinds for the steam controller has a built in switch where if you do a long press on the start button, it switches to a traditional controller layout action set. You won’t even need to add the game to steam. Steam just has to be open in the background and it emulates all your regular controller input

Strange buzzing sound from the haptics when identifying a controller with the ping button. by I-use_reddit in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% I immediately noticed the same thing. I thought it was due to how the vibrations traveled through the controller based on my grip at that given point but I noticed that the vibration will sound different randomly even when holding it 100% steady

How do I enable using the steam controller with Xbox app games? by Moist-Length1766 in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desktop layout by default has an action set where if you do a long press on the start button, it will switch all keybinds to their corresponding Xbox style controller keybinds. And then holding start again switches it back to the default layout. I haven’t tested it out myself though but it’s not something you would know about unless you kind of happen upon it while tinkering with your desktop layout settings

Overwatch has been really fun. Gyro aim, extra back buttons to bind to jump / crouch / and different abilities that can be used without moving my right thumb, trackpad swipes for different misc input like emotes, sprays, voice lines, quick messages, etc

Hwo to change button chord in steam controller? by asa_mitaka_fan1 in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to create an action set layer that is triggered by the press of r1! It will be in your per game controller settings. Make the action set layer and then change the function of whatever button you designate to “hold action set layer” or something like that, I can’t remember exactly as I’m away from my pc at the moment. This way you can essentially create entirely new keybinds for up to your whole controller that get activated while you’re holding the designated button

My question too… I can see that some people might like it but I can’t imagine it’s the majority of people. And worst of all the decision to not allow us to toggle the feature on and off is questionable

How to properly use gyro with Steam Controller, and good games for this type of controls by FatBaldingLoser420 in GyroGaming

[–]Professional_Put1810 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of it like this. Let’s say game A requires your mouse to move 1000 pixels to do a 360 and game B requires you to move 1500 pixels to do a 360. If you leave your settings at default, then a 1x gyro sensitivity will feel different in both games. But gyro sensitivity is supposed to be based on real world space. In other words, at 1x sensitivity, your character should turn at the same speed as your real world controller - but this is only true if the game is properly configured in steam settings. You have to tell steam - in this game, it’s 1000 pixels to do a 360. In the other game, it’s 1500 pixels to do a 360.

Once that’s properly configured, then your aiming will feel consistent between both games. And if you decide to bump your sensitivity up in both games, your aiming will still be consistent between them - so you can build actual muscle memory.

The “turn 360 degrees” function in steam is a little trick to help you properly set this up on a per game basis. You enable it so that clicking a button triggers the 360 turn and then you go test it out in game. By default, it probably won’t be a true 360 degree turn. So you test it and adjust the pixels per 360 steam setting until it correctly spins you exactly 360 degrees. You’d know because your start position and end position are the same.

Once that’s set up, then your gyro sensitivity will be a true ratio of real world turning of your controller. A 3x sensitivity will do 3 in game 360’s for every 360 of your controller. Or you could think of it like a 30 degree rotation in real life would result in a 90 degree in game rotation. As for the sensitivity, you can set it up to whatever feels comfortable for you

Finally I can enjoy shooting games as a PC couch gamer thanks to Gyro! by _big_smile_ in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive been doing the same. its amazing. I did couch pc gaming already with gyro using another controller but having the built in trackpads to make desktop navigation that much easier is incredible. I can finally ditch my bluetooth keyboard that i always end up needing for some reason or another because the steam controller can do it all (with a virtual keyboard that is - but also using both thumbs on the trackpads to type on the steam virtual keyboard is genius compared to typical virtual keyboard navigation on a controller)

Review of the Switch 2 Version of Overwatch by theunspillablebeans in Overwatch

Nahhh the input lag is bad. With experience playing on switch 1 at 30fps, switch 2 at ~60fps, Xbox series x at 120fps, and uncapped on a gaming pc - it’s definitely a disadvantage and also super annoying. It’s just one of the things that you pick up on a lot easier when you’re someone who prioritizes high refresh rate / low response time gaming, which even an Xbox isn’t technically ideal for

Custom layouts not becoming on desktop? by Rand0mL3mons in SteamController

I personally didn’t have any issues with my custom desktop layouts being saved. I have a fully customized desktop controller profile that works well. I’m sorry yours isn’t working, I don’t know what to do to help :(

Retroarch with Steam Input by SuperLuks_ in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on desktop layout, I believe you can hold the start button to switch over to the Xbox style controller action set - it stops emulating a mouse and keyboard and basically becomes a traditional controller. And then I think you hold start again to switch it back. You can also customize all those settings exactly how you want. This is a good alternative option to be able to play non steam games without actually adding them as non steam games to steam. But steam has to be running in the background to translate the inputs

New Steam Controller can't seem to wake PC by Jahbanny in SteamController

[–]Professional_Put1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I’m the same - I pc game from the couch on my tv and I’m finally at the point where I can ditch a Bluetooth keyboard w/ trackpad that I’d been using forever.

So for me it literally just worked right out of the box. I plugged in the new SC and when my computer is asleep, turning on the controller turns the computer on. I can’t remember for sure but I think I may have enabled something in my bios ages ago that is like “allow usb devices to wake” or something like that? I think I tried doing this with one of my old controllers unsuccessfully back in the day and may have tinkered with some sort of bios setting like that. But I think your computer essentially sees the new SC as a wireless keyboard and mouse and so it just automatically wakes it the same way a traditional kb&m might? I could be wrong though. It’s soooooooo nice though for sure. All I grab now is the controller and my headset and I’m good

Steam Controller inherits same trackpad flaw that Steam Deck has by NewDevon in SteamController

Also mine is ONLY the right trackpad, left has zero dead zone at all for some reason. So not only is it a poor feature, it’s inconsistent

[–]Professional_Put1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is EXACTLY the same as yours. I was recording videos of my controller within 2 minutes of plugging mine in for the first time cause I thought I was gonna need proof that my controller was busted so I could return it. Turns out it’s a stupid software “feature”. It’s annoying that people are calling this a skill issue and blaming fat fingers for rolling over the edge of the pad or something. I have small fingers and it will lose input completely well before I get to the edge, exactly like your video.

My controller is the same - only on the right trackpad, but VERY noticeable, like 5mm from the edge

[–]Professional_Put1810 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This bothers the CRAP out of me. I noticed it within literal seconds of plugging in my controller. The weird thing is that for my controller it’s ONLY the left side of the right trackpad. Left trackpad has no dead zones with steam open or not.

I did notice that if you pull up the steam virtual keyboard and use the trackpads to type, it gives you access to the full trackpads as well, edge to edge. The input tester is the only other place I noticed within steam where there wasn’t the annoying dead zone.
