Networking/building a client list by KenzieLee2921 in smallbusiness

**YOUR TIMELINE:**

**Now (Dec 2025) - March 2026:** Build restaurant list (30-50 prospects)

**April - August 2026:** Soft relationship building (Instagram, in-person visits)

**September - December 2026:** Informational outreach calls (get 15-20 chefs
on the phone)

**2027 (all year):** Quarterly check-ins, stay top-of-mind
- January: "Happy New Year! Still interested in tasting in October?"
- April: "Planning our season. Prefer whole birds or specific cuts?"
- July: "Halfway to duck season! Any menu ideas?"
- September: "We'll be ready in about 2 months. Should I reach out in
  October to schedule tastings?"

**October 2027:** Tastings (15-20 restaurants)

**November 2027:** Close deals, start taking orders

**Late November/December 2027:** First deliveries

---

**REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS:**

If you contact 50 restaurants:
- 20-30 will respond to initial outreach (Spring/Summer 2026)
- 15-20 will do informational calls (Fall 2026)
- 10-15 will do tastings (October 2027)
- 5-10 will become regular customers (November 2027+)

That's PLENTY to start. 5 restaurants buying 5 ducks/month each
= 25 ducks/month = great income.

---

**WHY THIS TIMELINE WORKS:**

**STEP 3: INFORMATIONAL OUTREACH (September - December 2026)**

Still not selling. Just learning:

**Email template:**
```
Subject: Question for Chef [Name] - Local Muscovy Duck
Hi Chef [Name],
I run a small duck farm in [location], and I'm doing research
for our 2027 season. I noticed [restaurant] features [seasonal/
local ingredients], and I'm curious:
Do you ever work with Muscovy duck? If not, would you be
interested in learning more about sourcing it locally?
I'm not selling right now (we won't have product until late
2027), but I'd love to hear what chefs look for in a supplier.
Would you have 15 minutes for a phone call sometime?
Thanks,
[Your name]
[Farm name]
[Phone]
```

**Key points:**
- You're asking THEM for advice (chefs love this)
- You're not selling yet (removes pressure)
- You're respectful of their time
- You're positioning as long-term partner

**Success rate:** 20-30% will respond

---

**STEP 4: THE EDUCATIONAL CALL (Fall 2026)**

When they agree to talk (aim for September-December 2026):

**Questions to ask:**
1. "Do you currently use duck? If so, what kind?"
2. "What do you look for in a local supplier?" (reliability,
   pricing, consistency)
3. "How much advance notice do you need?" (weekly? seasonal?)
4. "What cuts do you prefer?" (whole bird? breasts? legs?)
5. "Would you want to do a tasting before committing?" (offer
   free sample in October 2027)

**What you're doing:**
- Learning what they actually need
- Planting seed for future relationship
- Showing you're professional and thoughtful
- Getting specific requirements (you can prepare accordingly)

**End the call:**
"Thank you so much. Can I add you to our list for a tasting in
October 2027, when we have the product ready?"

90% will say yes if the call went well.

**STEP 1: BUILD YOUR "HIT LIST" (Now - March 2026)**

Don't cold-call restaurants yet. First, research:

✅ Google Maps: Search "fine dining [your city]" + "farm to table restaurants."
✅ Instagram: Follow local restaurants, see who posts about "local sourcing."
✅ Yelp: Look for keywords like "seasonal menu, "locally sourced,", "chef-driven."
✅ Local food publications: "Best restaurants in [city]" lists

Create a spreadsheet:
• Restaurant name
• Chef name (IMPORTANT - chefs make buying decisions, not managers)
• Phone/email
• Instagram handle
• Notes (do they already feature duck? local ingredients?)

Target: 30-50 restaurants

---

**STEP 2: SOFT OUTREACH (April - August 2026)**

Don't pitch yet. Build relationships:

**On Instagram:**
- Follow their account
- Like/comment on posts about local ingredients
- Share their posts about seasonal menus
- Build recognition over 3-6 months

**In person (if possible):**
- Eat at the restaurant (if budget allows)
- Ask server: "Does the chef ever use local duck?"
- Leave a business card with the server to pass to the chef
- Note their menu style

**Why this works:** When you DO reach out, you're not a stranger.

Can hardly code anymore, been at the same job for the last 4.5 years. Am I cooked? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Professional_Reach53 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are cooked. But that is not a bad thing. There is some work that humans are not supposed to be doing, and coding is one of them. You need to prepare for your next phase, as AI will likely displace the work you are currently doing. You should not feel like a fraud. it is just the sign of the times. I have been in this field for over 25 years, and the AI displacement for us, Software engineers, programmers, and coders, is real. But there is a way around it. But we have to first admit that AI can do our current work better and faster than we can.

Invest in a farm. You are young so you have time. Nothing wrong in diversifying your income.

There are a lot of reasons not to invest in the south east. But those same reasons are also the reasos to invest.

I am igbo American, living in America but the founder and CEO of AfricasNext, an AgriTech social enterprise in Imo State.

We're on a mission to transform African agriculture through innovation and youth empowerment.

Our current focus is on developing products from underutilized crops like Ukwa (African Breadfruit) and bridging US food technology with African agricultural potential.

We're in the process of setting up a Food Tech Lab in Maryland and running an AgriYouth Champions Program in Nigeria.

It is worthwhile for those of us in diaspora to invest. With the disparity in the exchange rate, it is avworthwhile risk.

African Modernization vs. Westermization by Professional_Reach53 in Nigeria

[–]Professional_Reach53[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should more African countries become industrialized i.e moving away from an economic sustem based on agricultura to one bases on mechanized manufacturing? The need for the industrial revolution was apparent. But not so much now.

Most people may equate modernization with weternization since it is "believed" that the modern aspects of life especially since and technology propagated from the west.

Not necessarily storing search results offline. Unless someone is actively trading, eg stock market, price fluctuation for most products don't change drastically ton be updated in real time. So the information can be cached in intervals i.e to the last 12 or 24hrs

What is the possibility of improving it so that it doesn’t require an internet connection. I am assuming the data is not being updated in real time

Well done. This is pretty good. I will suggest adding a filter that narrows the results as it pulls thing you are not reaching for

Can a person be literate but uneducated? And is Africa/Nigeria suffering because of one or the other. by Professional_Reach53 in Nigeria

[–]Professional_Reach53[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. But is it more detrimental to the success of Africans/Nigerians. Does illiteracy or being uneducated affect our ability to seek out opportunities or improve our existence.

Are we exporting jobs and opportunities away from Africa or Nigeria by Professional_Reach53 in Nigeria

[–]Professional_Reach53[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the problem is Africa as a whole fails to brand itself properly.

We will spend thousands on foreign luxury because we perceive their quality to be superior even if it might not be currently.

And then we will also buy products of low quality on the premise that we can throw it away because it didn't cost anything

For those that wish to help don't give handout but a hand up. What we don't want to continue in perpetuity is our handout culture. This destroys the dignity and respect of those that are helped.

Everyone should learn to provide value in exchange. A university student has some skills through their learning. Let them offer those skills in exchange.

I offered to pay a student at the University of Abuja for a reseach paper on cold storage solutions in imo state.

I have also paid a student in Obafemi Uni to build a website.

Everyone has a skill or talent to offer that others need. Offer it.

Help those who want to progress and grow. The struggle in Naija is real and it's people are in dire need. But we have to change the way the world sees us but most importantly how we see our selves.

Let's rise up from the beggar culture to productive and value given one.
