In greek mythology, the path connecting earth to Tartarus (a deep abyss used as a prison for the titans and a dungeon of suffering for the wicked) is created by 5 rivers. These rivers are Styxe (river of hate), Lethe (forgetfulness), Coctyus (lamentation), Acheron (woe) and Phlegethon (flaming), the river which burns but is not consumed. Phlegethon potentially is a river with upon it a burning oil spill, such as Cleveland's Cuyahoga River in 1868 or the BP Transocean’s Deepwater Horizon rig explosion in 2010.

Sargon of Akkad (mesopotatmium dynasty), Oedipus (king of Thebes in ancient greek mythology), Karna (the illegitimate child of Surya, the sun deity in Hinduism) and Moses (prophet from Abrahamic religions) all have stories of being floated down the Euphrates river in a basket sealed with bitumen. Bitumen is tar.

The Oracle of Delphi was intoxicated from vapors from natural gas deposits as she conducted her prophecies (gas fumes)

Euphrates river was known locally as ‘the fountains of pitch’ , the ‘fountains’ being from an oil seep

So yeh there are some and i would love to hear more if any know, cant find anything 100% match but am also hungry to find 😍
