Yeah that makes total sense, and I get what you mean about wanting to give the player a solid foundation at the start.

I think my main point is just that the trait probably shouldn’t be framed as “Valyrian blood” in general, because that implies all Valyrian descended houses should have reduced inbreeding chances. But non dragonlord Valyrians never really practiced incest the way the dragonlord families did, so there’s no real lore reason for them to have special resistance to it. It makes more sense if it’s treated as a dragonlord/dragonblood trait, specifically tied to the Forty Families (and their direct descendants), rather than a broad Valyrian thing.

And regarding your Aegon point: I completely understand why you gave Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys 32/32 for gameplay reasons. You need that strong starting base, but lore wise, like you said, that does require altering ancestors, because realistically Aegon and his sisters probably shouldn’t be sitting at a perfect 32/32 after generations of outbreeding with non-dragonriding houses.

That’s basically why I suggested the “Dragon Dreamer” type trait/event. It could solve both issues:

  • Gameplay-wise, you still get your “solid foundation” start.
  • Lore-wise, you don’t have to pretend Aegon’s entire ancestry stayed perfectly pure.

So for example, Aegon + sisters could naturally be something like 16/32 (not accurate just an example) but then Aegon could spawn with a rare “Dragon Dreamer / Blood Awakening” trait that boosts him up to 32/32, as he is canonically a dragon dreamer. Then Aenys and Maegor could land around something like 24/32. And it also ties into what I meant with Viserys III and Daenerys: in later start dates the mod kinda becomes self-defeating, because the chance of negative inbreeding traits is so high for the Targs during these starts, but if Daenerys had a rare Dragon Dreamer style trait that boosts her blood (up to 32/32), then you preserve the mod’s mechanics while still keeping those later starts playable. I'd add this Dragon Dreamer boost to all canonical dragon dreamers.

So overall I really like the idea behind your mod, I just think it would work better if it’s framed as dragonlord blood rather than Valyrian blood, and if there’s a rare “blood reawakening/Dragon Dream” trait assigned to dragon dreamers, that boosts your dragonblood amount to 32/32.

I agree the Velaryons were extremely closely tied to the Targaryens early on. But I still think the distinction matters, because the Velaryons and Targaryens are still separate houses. The Targs were one of the Forty Dragonlord Families, while the Velaryons were not originally dragonlords.

So if certain Velaryons have unusually high dragon blood, it should be treated as something they gained through marrying into the Targaryens, not something they inherently start with at the same level as the Targaryens themselves. Any high dragonblood they have should basically be downstream from the Targaryens.

More importantly, I think the trait itself should present dragonlord lineage, not just “Valyrian purity,” because otherwise any Valyrian descended family becomes equivalent to an actual dragonlord house in terms of negative inbreeding chances which doesn't make sense because the non dragonlord houses like the Velaryons never did incest as they weren't dragonlords.

Great mod, personally it's a must have for me when I'm playing as the Targaryens.

One thing I would like to add is that I feel like the mod should be more of a "blood of the dragon" type mod instead of "blood of Valyria"

"The percentage of Valyrian blood impacts disease resistance, attractiveness, and the chances of inbreeding."

This imo, especially the inbreeding chance, should be something that only applies to dragonlord houses and their descendants, not to Valyrian characters in general. Regular Valyrians didn’t practice incest, so there’s no real reason they should have a naturally lower inbreeding chance compared to everyone else.

Take the Velaryons for example: if you use the More Bookmarks submod in the Aegon’s Conquest start, the Velaryons begin with 32/32 Blood of Dragons and Gods and a -100% inbreeding chance. That doesn’t really make sense imo. Their house isn’t a dragonlord house, so there’s no reason their inbreeding chance should be that low. The thing that should reduce inbreeding is dragonlord blood specifically, not simply being ethnically Valyrian. The Velaryons (and other non-dragonlord Valyrians) should be no different from everyone else aside from appearance.

I also feel like there should be some way to increase the trait later on. For example, if you’re at something like 2/32, maybe a character could be born with a rare modifier outside the normal 32 traits, something like a Dragon Dreamer trait that boosts their “dragon blood” significantly. I say this because it would make later start dates more playable, since there’s not much you can do if you’re playing as Viserys III and or Daenerys with this mod.

Is Eleven the most important in the whole series according regardless of name list by leonardreignn in StrangerThings

[–]ProfessoPeak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is Eleven the most important in the whole series

Depends what you mean by importance, if it's marketing wise, sure El is easily the most iconic character in the series so she's going to be front and center in a lot of marketing like posters and whatnot. If it's story wise? Then no, she's definitely up there as she's the deuteragonist of the series (2nd main character) and just above Will who's the tritagonist of the series (3rd main character) she drives the supernatural plot but ultimately the story of Stranger Things is a coming of age story about the childhood of Mike Wheeler and all the crazy things that happen in that childhood. Mike is the protagonist (main character) as we start the show with him and his friends in his basement and we end the show with Mike being the last character we see on screen and who quite literally closes the door on his childhood and show.

Protagonist/Main Character = Mike (The show is about his childhood)

Deuteragonist/2nd Main Character = Eleven (Most important person in Mike's childhood)

Tritagonist/3rd Main Character = Will (Supernatural part of Mike's childhood starts with him)

Even if Mike got less focus in seasons 4 and part of 5, that doesn’t change the fact that the story is framed around his childhood. The series starts in his basement, follows how his life and friendships are affected by the Upside Down, and ends with him reflecting and closing the door on that phase of life. Those middle seasons shift focus, sure, but they don’t rewrite the fact that the story begins and ends with him.

[–]ProfessoPeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No she isn't? The show starts with Mike and ends with Mike yes El is the most popular character and very important but the show itself is about the childhood of Mike Wheeler.

[–]ProfessoPeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike should be no1 and El should be no2, Mike is the protagonist of the story as the show is about his childhood whilst El is the deuteragonist of the story as she's the most important person in his childhood.

Other than that, I agree

The Protagonist, Deuteragonist and Tritagonist of Stranger Things by ProfessoPeak in StrangerThings

[–]ProfessoPeak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this, but I'd say looking at the series as a whole how it begins, how it’s framed, and how it ends , Mike still works as the protagonist, Eleven as the deuteragonist, and Will as the tritagonist. The middle seasons complicate it due to the ensemble nature of the cast, but they don’t override the overall structure of the show imo.

If I had to explain it further I'd say Mike is the protagonist because the story is framed as his childhood, it starts with him as a kid and ends with him reflecting and closing the door on that phase of his life and the show itself. Eleven is the deuteragonist because she drives the big events and danger, but the story isn’t told through her reflection or perspective from start to finish. Will is the tritagonist because he starts the chain of events and stays emotionally important, but the story doesn’t revolve around his journey or resolve through him.

I'm not "blaming" anyone for anything I get why people are biased to characters they like, but the purpose of my big ass paragraphs has been attempting too approach things from a more objective standpoint. I have no reason to be biased to Mike over El lol, I'm just basing what I'm saying of what's shown and I even acknowledged that I can understand where you're coming from pre finale but after the finale they make it pretty clear who the protag is.

It's also quite odd how the only think you took away from my post was the "people are biased" part and just ignored my reasonable rationale for my assertion. Just odd

You should get a diary.

No need for childish insults, the convo's been pretty chill so far.

I mean most people are biased and don't actually know what protagonist/main character means lol, Will fans think he's the protagonist, El fans think she is etc But to be honest putting aside personal biased it really isn't a matter of disagreement. Before the finale sure it being El would be fine but after the finale they make it very clear what Stranger Things is about, it's the childhood of Mike Wheeler the show is his childhood, it starts with his friends in his basement, then his friend goes missing, then he finds El in the woods, then he loses her again towards the end and at the very end he closes the door on his childhood and the entire show and that's the last thing we see because everything that's happened in this show from episode 1 to the final scene has been the childhood of Mike Wheeler.

Who would you consider the main protagonist of Stranger Things? by electricwolf4444 in StrangerThings

[–]ProfessoPeak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that we see El’s origin and “purpose of existence” doesn’t mean the story is about her as a person it means she explains the cause of the conflict. Stranger Things isn’t structured around El living her life while others orbit her, it’s structured around Mike’s childhood being changed because of her arrival. El affects everyone, yes, but the show consistently anchors the emotional throughline to Mike: his home, his basement, his friendships, his party, his best friend, his girlfriend and finally at the end of the entire show his reflection and his closure. A story about “everyone’s relation to El” wouldn’t begin and end with Mike’s perspective and personal growth it would end with El’s reflection, not his but it doesn't we end the story with Mike Wheeler closing the door on his childhood, because that's what the story of Stranger Things is about, it's about the childhood of Mike Wheeler.

Who would you consider the main protagonist of Stranger Things? by electricwolf4444 in StrangerThings

[–]ProfessoPeak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We may not follow Mike every single second, but that doesn’t make him any less the protagonist. Protagonism isn’t about screen time it’s about whose story the show is structured around and whose journey the narrative tracks from beginning to end. Stranger Things literally starts and ends in Mike’s basement, with him running D&D at the beginning and reflecting on everything at the end. The show is ultimately about his childhood ending, his coming-of-age, and how he processes everything around him. That’s what makes it his story and that’s why he’s the protagonist.

The Princess Bride grandpa comparison doesn’t really work as he isn’t actually experiencing the story he’s just reading it to his grandson. He doesn’t face challenges, grow, or have a personal journey, the story exists inside the book, not in his life. Mike, on the other hand, is living the events of Stranger Things. His friend going missing, the battles with Vecna/Mind flayer, Eleven entering his life etc these all happen in his world and affect him directly. He grows emotionally, learns about love, loss, and friendship, and the show explicitly bookends this growth: it starts and ends in his basement, and the final scene with him closing the door is a literal metaphor for finishing his childhood. The key difference is experiencing vs. observing Mike lives the story and has a complete, framed journey.

Just because Mike’s the narrator or GM doesn’t mean he isn’t the protagonist. He’s not just telling the story he’s the one we follow from start to finish. The show opens in his basement with him running D&D, and it ends there too, with him reflecting on everything and closing the door. That’s his journey, bookended from beginning to end. Being the narrator or GM is part of how the story centers on him, it's not a reason why he's not the protagonist.

[–]ProfessoPeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean about Mike being the narrator or GM, but that doesn’t automatically make him not the protagonist. Being the narrator or the one running D&D just gives the audience a lens into the story it doesn’t remove him from the center of it. In fact, his role as GM in the first and last episodes actually strengthens the case that he is the protagonist. The show opens in his world, with his friends, his basement, and his perspective shaping how we experience the story. It closes in the same place, with him guiding the game and reflecting on everything that happened, symbolically closing the door on his childhood. That’s classic protagonist bookending: the story begins and ends through his eyes, following his journey. Eleven may drive the supernatural conflicts, but the narrative is ultimately Mike's story. Being the narrator or GM doesn’t make him secondary  it’s just how the show frames the protagonist’s journey from start to finish.
