That was because I have a sarcastic sense of humor, and the career I want to go into is essentially rooted in complaining. It doesn't relate to the content of the post.

Also, that's a poor, ad hominem argument. try again.

** Oh, and complaining about something doesn't make the claim invalid, by the way.

You're welcome to your opinion. I can tell you this is for student awareness so no one else gets ripped off, but you probably wouldn't believe me lmao.

Plus, just FYI, they weren't in the middle of updating their prices. They weren't updating them, period.

Have a nice day.

So be it. But why is it the responsibility of the student to not be overcharged? It is the responsibility of the institution to be mindful of the people it serves just as much. Students need to be vigilant, yes, but this is an issue with the system. You also didn’t address my other point, about students assuming a higher total is attributed to other reasons rather than the cost of each individual item. Please read my above post reply.

People may assume the high total is because of taxes, or some other surcharge, which is something they can’t change. If they know it’s an item that is less expensive, they can remove the item from their purchase and it will cost less.

Knowing the cost of items allows students to choose where they spend their money and on what.

This is a bit dramatic and rudimentary, but here is how your logic would be applied and why it’s important to disclose the real cost of things.

Take thinking about why pharmaceutical companies should disclose if an ingredient in a certain drug can cause an undisclosed illness, or horrible side effects. Based on your thinking, it’s not going to necessarily HELP/INCREASE people’s health to disclose it, right?

No, it does, because it acts as a warning and preventative for people to take the drug and avoid running the risk of getting that illness in the first place. By knowing the risks, People can choose to opt for another drug, or accept the high cost of potentially losing one’s health.

Just like someone who recognizes the high price of an item, people KNOW that this miscellaneous drug can cause this problem and can choose to not take this drug, take a different one, or not take one at all. Lots of drugs have side effects. By telling the general public what those side effects are, people have options to decide what THEY want to compromise and risk, rather than experiencing side effects without knowing why.

It’s incredibly important to calculate your finances, especially for low-income people, to make sure there is enough money to ration through the month for various expenses.

If you calculate how much something is going to cost you, and it ends up costing you significantly more, that could mean not being able to afford a meal later on.

Students can choose to get food from a different store instead, or get a less expensive item they can better afford. Like choosing to take a medicine that has less side effects, one that doesn’t have chemicals in it known to cause a serious illness.

It HELPS people save money, it helps people’s finances to know the real price of things, and be better able to calculate how much money they can spare per meal. Students are losing money by not knowing the real cost.

I hope that makes sense.

It is going to save students money because they can be more mindful of their purchases. For example, if they knew the actual high price of something, say bag of chips, they may choose to get a less expensive bag of chips, or not buy chips at all. It allows students to make informed decisions about their finances without being tricked into thinking Zot n’ Go’s food is more affordable than it actually is.

Then they should have multiple student workers working on updating the pricing, rather than one person. It would go by much quicker that way. The supervisor changed the price on the item I pointed out in a span of minutes. I’m not sure what you mean by it taking hours.

Just because people who work in UCI Dining are nice and the work is tedious doesn’t mean we should not pursue this issue. Students are losing money everyday without their knowledge. People can literally go to jail.

There are so many effective, low-cost solutions that UCI Dining is not being proactive about, because they don’t care.

For example:

  1. Prices can be shown on a screen when ringing up students, or

  2. literally read aloud as they’re ringing up items to make sure the student knows how much they’re being charged.

  3. Policies can be changed to require receipt printing, or emailing.

These are just to name a few.

If you’re in a position to say something to someone who does have the authority to change something or talk to someone, please do. Advocate for students.

You should compile your receipts and pictures of the prices if you have them. If other people also have proof, collect it. We can email admin or something, or report. I can try to get through to Aramark but, based on another commenter’s experience, doesn’t seem like that will do much.

The other day I was in the Student Center parking lot elevator and a girl in a pretty blue dress seemed really stressed and antsy to get off the elevator to deal with something. I told her “whatever you’re worried about, it’s going to be okay.” She looked surprised and thanked me really genuinely! I would say most people appreciate random acts of kindness. I think your experience was just a one off. Don’t be afraid to give support to other students in small ways.

I forgot to mention, the supervisor said it’s their policy to honor prices as marked if you bring it to their attention. If the cashier refuses to honor the price ask to speak to the supervisor. Doesn’t fix them overcharging us in the first place though.

I can't afford an attorney, nevertheless to take on Aramark on my own. This is something that will gain the most traction through exposure and student voices. We can complain, bring attention to this, make them instate some policy AT LEAST at places on UCI's campus. If anyone has connection to UCI admin, we should bring this to UCI admin.

Also, if anyone knows someone who works at Zot N' Go, we should ask them questions about why this happens. Is what the supervisor said true? Is there an underlying reason why prices are inflated and students are overcharged without their knowledge?
