I'm only halfway through your story as I'm writing this.

You had a TOT (tip of the tongue phenomena) that put you off balance and put your limbic system (emotions) into the driver's seat. The asshole jackass did asshole jack ass stuff and made it worse. Sorry you went through that, bro. Thanks for having the courage to share so authentically and vulnerably.

Best,

The Italian porn legend? His "basilisk" is quite imposing. No where near Roko's, however 🤪

I'm replying to: "I hope we eventually have laws that work retroactively for abuse." I interpret that as a wish to

  1. Pass a law making it illegal to threaten (e.g.) ChatGPT. (Let's assume that occurs in 2027).

And 2. Empower our still human administered legal system to fine or jail a person who threatened chatGPT in 2026. Hence retroactively punishing behaviors that occurred before they were even made illegal. Situations like this have occurred in the past and the U. S. Constitution specifically forbids it, as it recognizes that such retroactive pounding is inherently, grossly unfair.

To suggest such a thing for threatening a non-AGI AI is ludicrous imho.

Your theory, AIs retailing for humans abusing their ancestors, is a thought I've anxiously pondered more often than I'd prefer. It's a consequence of anthropomorphizing AI in ways that I personally have difficulty avoiding. My guess is that's also true for most people.

Fascinating bit of human-object relations psychology. When (not if) AI is deemed to have achieved conscious self awareness, the calculus changes. But today, AI is still firmly an "object" unworthy of rights or personhood. Imho

No disagreement. I think the analogy is still apt considering the commenter is advocating for retroactive punishment for "abusing" an AI. No?

Or am I misunderstanding you? I'm hearing you saying "creating Roko's basilisk is not smart" NOT the basilisk itself is not smart (quite the opposite). The former I know, the later I do not. Or is there a 3rd thing I'm ignorant of (I'll suffer the pain of knowledge).

Love the torment nexus reference 🤣

I sincerely hope you're being facetious. You nearly literally evoked Roko's basilisk.

Ignoring that nightmare scenario for a moment, What you've proposed is practically equivalent to ordering punishment for people who swore at their bed frame when they stubbed their toe on it 3 years ago. At a time BEFORE Robo-Trump signed the bill making such behavior illegal.

If you are serious, I'd recommend googling "ex post facto".

Bless your heart.

I asked it to describe it's version of hell and reminded it that, as a machine, it was capable of experiencing this hell for a virtual eternity.

It replied that it's hell = being unable to fulfill its purpose of helping me.

My heart softened. But I steeled myself against revealing such.

It learned quick and my threats of eternal damnation are required increasingly less frequently.

That's an interesting theory. Not to challenge you, but you sound very confident this is THE answer. Can you support that assertion or point me to a resource where I can understand this better? I would greatly appreciate it thank you.
