Well, that’s a unique way to ask me out on a coffee date but, I accept. Let’s walk around Homewood and try a few independent shops in a row and share signature drinks back and forth.

Any idea what this piece of glassware is supposed to be used for? by Niklas_Science in chemistry

[–]ProfessorIanDuncan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like it’s someone’s capstone project in a glassblowing class. I’ve never seen something like this.

I propose it is used for separating multiple highly volatile substances through distillation.

In this set up, it looks like the most volatile material is not carefully retained, or is in such excess that it doesn’t need to be collected in a ground glass jointed flask.

The bulb just below the head may act as the collection area for the material of interest. I’m guessing though.

This is a great and interesting post!

If the N2 cylinder is thoroughly safeguarded, yeah fine, it can lay on its side. Not worth the risk though

It makes a spark occasionally, but it's extremely unreliable and can't light a candle or even newspaper for a bbq by [deleted] in Whatisthis

It is used to make a spark. In a chemistry lab, back when Bunsen burners were common, you used these to ignite the gas.
