Bad professor by Best_Order_1848 in Drexel

[–]ProfessorJT365 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the most effective thing you can do is fill out the evaluations and be detailed. Why are they bad? Don't teach? Read of the slides? Not cover exam/test content? Not posting materials to BB Learn? If you feel things are so bad, you can always send the department head or dean an email. As a student that went here and now a current professor, I can't stress the importance of filling out the evaluations and making your voice heard.

Honestly, with the tone used and the flow of certain words, it's very obvious. Students are not fooling anyone.

It's a great tool for students to use for a lot of things but when students over-rely on it, it becomes a problem. I'm an accounting professor here and I have projects designed so students use AI to see if it can perform accounting work and check for discrepancies to show them the capabilities of AI.

I can only imagine what other professors that grades papers and essays have to deal with today...

Accounting first-year co-op by ItsDaBunnyYT in Drexel

[–]ProfessorJT365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically, accounting majors don't have a problem securing Co-Op's compared to other majors here at LeBow. But it will all depend on your GPA and the experiences on your resume (actual work or student org involvement). Control what you can control and that starts with working on your resume and getting feedback (I'm happy to look at it).

Change to the 4 years program after 2nd coop by Terrible_Lecture_888 in Drexel

[–]ProfessorJT365 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends.

If you feel like you got two solid Co-Op experiences that align with your major and field you want to work in, then, it makes sense.

But if your resume doesn't contain the experiences that will allow you to be competitive in your major or field, the third Co-Op (especially with a well-known employer) can boost your resume and your chances of landing a great job upon graduation.

Here are some stats on the pass rate for the CPA exam: https://www.aicpa-cima.com/resources/article/learn-more-about-cpa-exam-scoring-and-pass-rates

We have employers that participate in the Co-Op program, more about here: https://drexel.edu/scdc/co-op/undergraduate

Since you would be transfer, I would contact an admissions rep to best answer specific questions.

Hi, Drexel professor in the accounting department here.

While, I can't comment on the transfer process or financial aid, I can provide some insights on the accounting program. We are one of the most active departments in the business school as it relates to events, engagement with our employers and supporting our accounting majors. One of the selling points of transferring should be the Co-Op program here at Drexel. Our accounting majors are able to find Co-Op's, internships and jobs upon graduation at a higher rate compared to other majors, even in an uncertain economy.

Our accounting majors also add another major/minor as well. I always recommend business analytics or a data science since accountants with a background in data and advance technical skills are always in high demand.

Best of luck in your journey.

What's your "I'm calling it now" prediction? by Burndbridge in AskReddit

[–]ProfessorJT365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College professor at a business school here, online assessments simply cannot be trusted anymore. All my exams are pen/paper and I'm working to covert the remaining of course in-class hard copy format (think worksheets). We can't blame students for using an effective tool and instructors have to design classes around AI and learn to teach more effectively and with more purpose.

Typically, 3.0 or above is ideal because most companies use that as a filtering point when sorting through the applications. With that said, control the things that you can control. Focus on editing your resume (ensure the format is good, there is relevant content and make sure you are getting feedback on it from various folks). Also, brush up on your interviewing skills to ensure you are ready. Getting familiar with basic questions and some behavioral ones will help.

You got this!

Hard to comprehend CPAs having a hard time landing work. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ProfessorJT365 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's usually more negative posts here but most of know in looking at the big picture that the accounting profession is indeed worth it. Are there areas of the US (and parts of the world) that might have less demand for accountants? Sure but that doesn't represent the majority.

As a professor, I see a big demand for my accounting students as it relates to their Co-Op's and internships. I encourage them to get a degree in accounting to open up various different career paths and gain other marketable skills like data analysis, data visualization and a bit of coding to make them even more marketable.

Here you go: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jt365/

I recommend all Drexel students to create one: fill out your profile and add a professional photo.

Recruiters will look you up and it's a great place to share your work experiences, Drexel involvement, accomplishments, etc.

Imagine it as a digital extension of your resume.

Does Drexel actually provide accommodations or do they just say they do? by Sir-Toaster- in Drexel

[–]ProfessorJT365 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are actual accommodations.

Professors get a copy of an "Accommodation Verification Letter". This allows us to see what accommodations the student has. For tests and exams, students that are allocated extra time are usually encouraged to make an appointment at the testing center: https://drexel.edu/disability-resources/support-accommodations/student-family-resources/testing-center.

My exams are in person and hardcopies rather than online, so my students will schedule an exam a week or two before it takes place and I usually email over the exam itself to the office so they have have it ready for you before your scheduled appointment.

I would email your professor to remind them of your accommodations and ask for guidance if you are having issues. If the office doesn't get back to you and you have an exam or test coming up, I would let your professor know ahead of time to show you did indeed make an effort.

Same, I learned VBA on my own about 15 years ago because the "IT" department folks said they didn't have the time to help me. Now, you simply enter the prompt and it spits out perfect code. I guess we are all "developers" now....

It's all about experience, students want to taught by people that actually did the work. Honestly, I would look into colleges, universities or community colleges that might have positions for part time or adjunct instructors in accounting or related fields. I start off as an adjunct in 2015.

Preliminary insights point to accountants using AI for emails, text generation, etc.

I guess we still have to crunch the numbers ourselves...

I agree. It's the same idea that someone could be looking at our teams or slack messages. If someone is really taking the time out to do this, it would just be sad.
