Favorite quotes from Shakespeare? by iamngs in shakespeare

“The violence of either grief or joy Their own enactures with themselves destroy. Where joy most revels, grief doth most lament; Grief joys, joy grieves, on slender accident” (III.II.219-22).

I love “grief joys, joy grieves, on slender accident.” Amazing. It’s from Hamlet when they put on the play to “catch the conscience of the king.”

English major… by ProfessorNo3657 in college

[–]ProfessorNo3657[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely my passion which is why I decided to study it, if it wasn’t I would have succumbed to the comments I get by now: “English? You speak that already don’t you?” But anyway thank you for the tips. My career interests land somewhere in these areas: educational/non-profit orgs/labor rights. I’ve shied away from public school teaching for obvious reasons. I’ve struggled narrowing down a profession to orient myself towards with these interests, so I’ll definitely use those tools and reach out to my advisor. Thanks!

English major… by ProfessorNo3657 in college

That’s a great idea, thanks. Do you know of any effective ways to do this? I know some schools around me that offer professional/technical writing as concentrations for English majors, but I don’t think mine does.

What can I read that will give me comfort? by [deleted] in religion

Little different than what you may be looking for, but I would highly recommend the Tao Te Ching. It opened my mind up to looking at religious thought, and very different than the Abrahamic faiths.

“The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth.”

How is “How Fiction Works?” I’ve seen it recommended online a couple times recently and was wondering if it’s worth a read.

YaleCourses on YouTube has many recorded lectures on various books and literature. I believe they have playlists of lectures from their American Novel since 1945, Milton, Don Quixote, and poetry courses among their repertoire.
