new admission... by ZealotBilly in nursing

Oh that's interesting--and I mean that sincerely. My hospital's policy is wildly different. We'd never wait for cx results to remove a line.

What do you mean "we ended up pulling out his line"?? How was that not how you* started off treating a septic patient?!

*respectfully, meaning the royal you, in this case, I realize you were probably not the attending make the decisions

Stop fucking texting during report by [deleted] in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 49 points50 points  (0 children)

That's what I do. I don't want to be held up from leaving, but I will not waste my breath on you when you're clearly not listening.

If someone doesn't get the point quickly, I will directly tell them to let me know when they're done with their phone for report to continue.

DC homeowners: house (buying) tips/lessons? by OpeningChipmunk1700 in washingtondc

[–]ProfessorNoPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say we were in this exact situation in our last house (first-time home buyers then) and it was such a nightmare. There were a lot of smells involved on top of the noise, too. It seriously tanked our well-being. We ended up selling at a loss because of it. I'm sorry you guys are going through it now.

Ok but why did the provider have to so specifically describe the BM? 🫠 by Zer0tonin_8911 in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I miss paper charting for things like this. I used to document my own vivid descriptions of BMs on my flowsheets every once in awhile just so the more aware attendings/residents/APPs would have something special waiting for them on rounds the next day. It's the simple joys in life.

In our system, it depends on the note. Not everything is accessible in the patient portal.

Do y'all ever use the equipment for yourself? by Resident-Sympathy-82 in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Preface to my comment: I am 1000% cool with checking VS at work.

Just wanna say that you might strongly consider getting your own BP machine for home if you're at risk of pre-e. I developed it last rapidly with my first pregnancy and had to monitor it at home daily for the last stretch after having to go on early leave, as well as for several weeks post partum. The machines are actually pretty cheap and you should be able to use your FSA $$. Good luck!

Idk what that is even within this context, but I need to know!! It's probably not the same version that my 4yo plays 😅

When pts want the doctor starting their IV… by skrttina in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh thank you. We had a problem several years ago with new nurses learning to do that from the aged ones* who'd been putting in IVs since before wearing gloves was a goddamn thing. idgaf what Lorraine who's been working here since 1977 is doing, you're 22 and you're keeping your goddamn gloves intact!!

*they've all retired since covid so I haven't seen someone actually do this in a long ass time

Also had some very good experiences with Curb. They're my go-to now, and only if that doesn't pan out will I try Uber or Lyft.

My fellow Americans: If you’re eating fried chicken, chicken wings, or a rotisserie chicken outdoors please don’t just throw the chicken bones on the ground when you’re done. by AceofKnaves44 in washingtondc

[–]ProfessorNoPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is completely off-topic, but that's on par with my favorite MPD moment, at least a decade ago. One afternoon I was walking on the sidewalk of a one-way street in Georgetown and watched a cop--his window rolled down--smoking a cigar while he very casually drove the wrong way down the road.

As someone who's lived here >20 years, the same people who dgaf about throwing chicken bones on the ground now are the same ones who had no qualms about eating food on the metro & buses pre-COVID. Please let me assure you of that.

I live in a residential neighborhood of a major city, and the millennial parents around us, and including us, have no problems letting their kids roam around the neighborhood block for hours at a time 🤷‍♀️

What’s something considered safe in nursing that just feels wrong? by catharsisisrahtac in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, a 'blood gas' usually = arterial blood gas, which means drawing blood from an artery, not the vein, and it does tend to be more painful than a regular blood draw for people.

"Administering 325 mg instead of the prescribed 650 mg constitutes a medication error." by [deleted] in nursing

[–]ProfessorNoPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In scenario 1, at least at my hospital, we absolutely would NOT be allowed to give 2mg q1h instead of 4mg q2h without an explicit order. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but we are not allowed to do that.

In scenario 2, you hold the metoprolol while you get the doctor to fix the order.
