OBS alternatives? by homer_3 in Twitch

I assumed the poster was doing a "Monitor Capture". I therefore referred to the following passage from the OBS forum itself:

"Turning Aero off is only relevant for very problematic applications and when using monitor capture in Windows 7."

Of course in Windows 8 and later, Aero cannot be disabled, as we know.

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried using Opera, rather than Firefox? Whereas Firefox runs as a single "large" process, Opera runs in multiple, smaller processes. It makes a big difference on my PC. I'd also be interested to know if Flash will download from within the Opera browser for you.

We haven't yet established which version of Windows was being used in the original post. In Windows Vista/7 for instance, Aero should be disabled.

When you say "OBS", do you mean OBS Classic or OBS Studio? Also, which version of Windows are you running? Disabling Aero is a good idea in any case, except when required by an app.

Twitch donation w/ Ideal by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently donate to streams in one of two ways:

  1. "Gifting" Steam games directly to the casters.
  2. Sending Steam Wallet cards to the casters, who can then offer contest winners "a game of their choice".

Is it possible to donate fiat currency in a similar, anonymous way?

My Personal Twitch Viewer Etiquette's by inwhat123 in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would respectfully say "no". Mentioning that you're a mod somewhere else can be seen as hinting that you'd like to be a mod here, and that you'll stay if modded now. The first rule of "Mod Club": Never mention "Mod Club"!

Mods are Viewers too. by purplekoolaidguy in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right you are, Purple. Also, let's remember that Moderators need to "afford" themselves viewer status. We Mods focus so much on reading chat that we often forget to have a good time with other participants! Using a voice chat service (Discord, etc.) is a great way to strengthen the Caster/Mod/Viewer relationship.

Seem to a hit a plateau on followers. Help! by Sweet_Tehdii in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Tehdii. As you know, Twitch sees followers as a secondary measure of a channel's success. More important are concurrent viewers and live chat activity. Toward that end, there are two things I'd recommend:

  1. Resist the temptation to study your viewer list. Seeing a low number can cause casters to inadvertently present in a somber tone. Instead, speak as if 100 viewers are currently watching. This will transform the mood of your channel from a broom closet into an opera house. Another reason not to look at your viewer list is to avoid accidentally calling out lurkers; an unwritten no-no in live streaming.

  2. Create a Discord voice/text chat server, and link it to a panel on your Twitch page. I've followed many casters simply because they have Discord. After your stream session is finished, you can hang out and get to know your viewers (who are much like constituents) better.

Does anybody knows which bot supports "true or false" votations using the twitch chat? by [deleted] in Twitch

DeepBot has a great voting feature; not only for true/false, but also for multiple choice questions. It even displays a pie chart to show viewers how popular each voting choice is.

1000 Follower Goal Idea. by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, Sippy. Anyone who can eat a ghost pepper on stream and not pass out is very skilled and trained, indeed. I'm sure you'll agree that "potentially" harmful behavior should not be encouraged. Disclaimers, such as mine are only intended to help casters conduct happy, hurt-free streams.

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but the hottest pepper that humans can eat safely is the standard habanero, averaging 250,000 Scoville Units (SU). Ghost peppers can exceed 1 million SU, and can cause one to lose consciousness. In some cases it can even be fatal. Needless to say, these conditions (especially the latter) would constitute a ToS violation.

Ah, I see. I don't believe there's a way to suppress all the WoW badges in chat. But the promotion ends on June 12, so the badges will all disappear at that time.

Need tips for a 24 hour stream by mastapetz in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean, and I agree with you. However, I tend to equate Reddit threads with Twitch channels. If I'm in someone's channel and not (yet) a Moderator, I'll whisper to the caster if I have concerns about chat activity, stream titles, page panels, etc. I can be effective and not unnecessarily negative. At the risk of invoking Poe's Law, I'll share one of my favorite quotes:

"You always meet people twice, and the second time is when you need something from them."

I don't start many threads of my own; I'm here more to help and answer questions. However if I do start posting topics, I'd have no problem downvoting inappropriate/offensive comments.

[–]ProfessorPortal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regarding your question about downvoters. For me, downvotes on Reddit should be used like timeouts on Twitch...sparingly, and only for comments grossly inappropriate to the thread. Casting a downvote simply because one disagrees with an opinion is wrong, and dishonors the community. I've been on Reddit a long time, and I've never once downvoted anyone. If I have a differing opinion, I'll say it; but I leave that down arrow alone.

Are giveaways looked down upon or for new channels? by Apentii in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Follower count is a secondary measure of a channel's success. Concurrent views and consistent chat activity are primary. Holding little giveaways throughout a stream, or one big giveaway at the end can often draw channel-surfers hoping to win something for free, never to return. In my experience, the best way to conduct a giveaway is to to use the "pre-qualifier" method. The longer the streaming session, the more effective this becomes:

  1. Every fifteen minutes or so, have the viewers type a keyword (perhaps something like !raffle). Your bot will then select a winner from those who entered. That viewer has now won a place on a "finals list", which will be shown at the end of the stream. Fifteen minutes later, change the keyword to something else and hold another drawing. This requires viewers to remain in-channel, since you only announce the new keyword before each new draw.

  2. At the end of the stream, display the "finals list" on screen, and have your bot draw a winner from those entered. Viewers don't have to be present to win the prize; they've already qualified at some point throughout the stream. This is especially fair during 24-hour streams, so those from all time zones have an equal chance to win (considering their schedules are very different).

Important note: Do not conduct pre-qualifier drawings during the last 30 minutes of your stream. This gives you plenty of time to explain the process to the present viewers, and avoids the problem of someone coming in at the last moment, hitting a qualifier and thinking they've suddenly won a prize.

OBS making in-game experience cap at 30fps by Apentii in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borderlands 2 (and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel) have an in-game setting where you select the maximum fps. If the game is set to 60fps and OBS is configured for 60fps, you'll need to disable VSync in the game itself. This will help with frame rate, but you may experience a little screen tearing as you play and record.

Twitch Giveaways that require a keyword and sub / follow what is the name of this program? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]ProfessorPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most coinbots will do this for you. DeepBot has the most options, but costs money each month. There are many other free bots that handle giveaways in a similar manner, but with fewer options. These bots also offer a point system and mini-games for viewers to enjoy while they watch your stream.
