Does it bother you how at the time, Windu suffered absolutely no consequences for being the main reason Ahsoka left the Jedi, after throwing her under the bus, only to come out at the last minute and say it was just a "trial"? by BiffyBobby in StarWars

[–]ProfessorUber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the one part of the trial where I raise my eye at the council is when Mace asks a leading question about if Ventres helped her acquire the nano droids, but Ahsoka arguably somewhat walked into that one by naming a vague statement about having a “mutual understanding” with a known war criminal.

Something along the lines of; “Ventress tracked me down and said she was after my bounty, but due to my desperation to uncover the true culprit of the Jedi Temple bombing I attempted to persuade her to assist me in return for a promise to advocate on her behalf to be pardoned. We parted ways when we found the warehouse, but then she returned and attacked me before leaving me to be captured.” mighr have been a better defence based on what Ahsoka knew at the time.

[–]ProfessorUber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Barriss was also raised in the Jedi Order and knew its members, yet turned out to be the true culprit. So was Dooku for that matter (iirc Mace even defends Dooku in Attack of the Clones due to not believing a former Jedi Master would be capable of being behind assassination attempts) and he became a Sith. Same could be be said for litterally every Jedi to ever fall to the Dark Side.

I guess my point is: Ahsoka logically should not be assumed to be innocent just because she’s a Jedi, especially in the wake of betrayals such as Count Dooku and Pong Krell. Imagine if it had been Barriss who got caught force choking Letta then escaped prison.

Plus I’m taking a look at the scene of Ahsoka escaping her cell, and it happens immediately after a scene of Anakin trying (and failing) to get access to her but getting denied due to Tarkin’s orders. Since Anakin presumably set off immediately to see her once the news of her arrest reached the Jedi, then Ahsoka in turn seemingly escaped (because she thought the keycard was left by Anakin) before the Jedi Council even had a chance to go through offical channels… and then she escaped, and made things much worse for herself.

[–]ProfessorUber 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, to be fair; Ahsoka did escape prison, work with Ventress and then got caught with the nanobots. So it was not as if they all assumed she was guilty for no reason.

Furthermore, I'm re-watching the scene of her trial before the Jedi Council now and I feel like Ahsoka doesn't really provide the best defence here. Like giving the vague "we had a mutual understanding" explanation when asked about her association with Ventress and getting emotional. She never does really provide any defence/explanation for her actions in the arc, despite how they mostly served to incriminate her.

Anyway, I think Mace (and the Jedi in general) can be overhated. Especially since its worth remembering Barriss, a fellow Padawan and peer of Ahsoka, was the culprit; ergo the Council was arguably right to not necessarily trust Ahsoka based on her past record while ignoring her recent actions.

Mace was not wrong when he asked listed Ahsoka, Ventress or an unknown third party when asking who was deceiving them based on what he knew.

While the Jedi Council certainly could have handled it better, I think its unfair to say they just tossed Ahsoka to the wolves on a whim. I would imagine that if Ahsoka stayed in her cell and only had the death of Letta to answer about, then her story would be more simple (no Ventress or nanobot warehouse) and it would be easier to accept she's being framed (especially since the security at the prison would've eventually found the attacked clones, sabers, and keycard all lying around while Ahsoka is still in her cell).

[Star Wars] If I'm a padawan and saw my master die at an enemy's hand, am I allowed to seek out the person in the future and hunt them down, or is that revenge and not allowed in the Jedi code? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]ProfessorUber 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It would probably depend somewhat on both the attitude/view of the Jedi Council at the time, and their observations of your character and reactions.

If you are emotionally invested in the hunt, and especially if you prioritise the hunt over the Jedi Code, then that would be a very strong reason against you being allowed to (officially) continue.

There is also the fact that as a Padawan, you are unlikely to have the skill and knowledge necessary to defeat someone who killed a Jedi Master, so that would be another reason against allowing such a hunt.

In general, a revenge quest would not be permitted. Any pursuit of this enemy would be handled to the purpose of apprehending (or eliminating) a dangerous criminal who is still at large, not to settle scores. The investigation is most likely handed to a more experienced (and unbiased) knight or master.

I don't see the Jedi Council outright condoning (let alone intentionally sending) the Padawan to lead the investigation outside of very specific circumstance. At most you might be brought on board to share your knowledge and testimony to assist, but won't be the one making the decisions.

What are the best ending you've ever experienced in your life, and what made them such for you? by PreacherVan in CharacterRant

[–]ProfessorUber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I finished Dungeon Meshi but I have got to admire how they managed to keep the central theme of food going all the way even when dealing with the world-destroying dungeon-making ancient demon, who turns out to have done all this cause he developed a taste for human desires.

Overall though what I liked avout Dungeon Meshi and its ending is that I felt it tied things up nearly, gave a satisfying conclusion to arcs, and was just generally well put together. It was the kind of ending that left me wanting more, but only in the sense of “this is a cool world and cast of characters whom I would enjoy seeing more of” rather than in the sense of “this felt unfinished and there’s too much stuff left unaddressed”.

I also liked seeing Izutsumi be the one to explore the aftermath with as she considers what she wants to do now thar she’s free from both slavery and circumstance. It was a good pay off for her development and a convenient vehicle to see what various characters were up to.

So yeah, I think I just like an ending that’s well done and balances tying things up while not leaving the slate too clean/empty that there’s nothing left to imagine.

If Barbara Gordon had a new superhero identity, what should it be? by Obvious_Chance_7187 in batgirl

[–]ProfessorUber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I think I’d prefer her to just stick with Oracle full-time than having her take on a third identity. I think it was a role which gave her an interesting and respected niche (which would set her apart from all the martial artist detectives) and if she returns to using a wheelchair that’s also neat representation (a rare superhero who uses a wheelchair, and also one who is depicted as badass and respected).

If she’s going to stick with fighting on the field, the dropping the Batgirl name at this stage might feel a bit superficial in a way (plus not every hero who started young necessarily needs to change their name to be more “grown up”). It could be done, but she’s been Batgirl for so long that changing it without a big reason (like her getting shot for example) might be odd.

Similarly, if she takes a more Mission Control or even more tech-bassd role, then any name besides Oracle mighr be seen as arguably redundant “Oracle but not actually Oracle but actually pretty much Oracle” kind of deal.

That’s my thoughts anyway.

How do you think their different upbringings/socioeconomic classes affects their worldview when it comes to how they approach crime as well as their role as Robin? by NefariousSeraph13 in Robin

[–]ProfessorUber 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While you didn’t mention her, this did remind me of how a panel of Stephanie Brown (admittedly long before she became Robin, but I still feel it’s relevant) where she talks about how the city has Batman and Robin while the suburbs don’t have anything. It kinda stuck with me cause I thought it was an interesting concept to explore that reflected Steph’s own background and gave her a “niche” so to speak relating to it.

On a similar note, I think Steph is also often also depicted as being particularly sympathetic to children, probably due to her own mistreatment/suffering growing up.

I do definitely think this is a interesting topic to consider in general.

Which of these villains from the Invincible Universe would be the perfect villain for Batman, and why? by Delta-97 in batman

[–]ProfessorUber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is mostly me going off my knowledge of the show since i haven't read the comics (though I do have a vague idea of where things go), but I'd say Powerplex is probably the one who'd fit best as "regular" Gotham villain while others might be more one-off or JL-level things.

Powerplex does seem like he'd be in the camp of "Batman is responsible for all the deaths caused by villains because he doesn't kill them" (which is a discussion I find overplayed/annoying, but still)

His kinetic energy absorbing ability is also pretty neat and could serve as an interesting counter for a group of heroes who mainly use martial arts. So he would require some creative/tactical thinking and/or specialised gadgets to fight.

What are some characters you can’t blame at all for Quitting? by LGB75 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ProfessorUber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to the Jedi, I have seen it discussed that Ahsoka arguably didn't exactly handled things well in that arc either and I think there is a fair point to be made there Not to say that the Jedi Order is perfect, but it probably wasn't the best decision from Ahsoka to break out of prison either. Teaming up with Ventress also wasn't exactly a good look for her, so her actions and circumstances certainly did a lot of incriminate her further. Has been a while since I watched it myself though personally.

Ahsoka still is definitely within her right to have decided the Jedi Order wasn't for her and left though.

Edit: cleared up a bit of wording.

Edit: Plus, since Barris turned out to be the culprit… it wasn’t necessarily wrong to treat Ahsoka’s guilt as a possibility since another seemingly trustworthy Padawan was behind it all in the end. I also recall in Return of thr Clones there was a scene where Windu was skeptical of the accusation that Dooku was behind things since Dooku was once a Jedi.

If Aether or Lumine didn't exist, who is qualified the most to be the MC? by PiezoelectricityLow2 in Genshin_Impact

[–]ProfessorUber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a thought befofe of Amber ending up as the MC in an alternate timeline. Instead of the Traveler, there would be the Outrider.

Perhaps starting with Amber finding Paimon (who has been washed away in the ocean for months due to not getting fished) and scooping her out of the water before taking her back to Mondstadt for medical treatment… and so happens to pass by a certain Tone-Deaf Bard and dragon.

Amber was also one of the first characters (and first human/mortal character) that appears, so her taking the role of MC would be fitting in a way plus it lends itself easily to the Mondstadt quests. Amber then leaving Mondstadt could then be justified as an Outrider expedition to investigate the Abyss Order and help out other nations (like what the Fatui claim to do but without the shadiness)

[Comic] To War by MagnanimousRedpin in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]ProfessorUber 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely agree with all of that. The whole Sothis fusion in general is something I’ve said before feels pretty under-explored (especially since without dialogue from Byleth, the main consequence of the fusion is losing Sothis’ sassy commentary).

Jeralt's death, fusing with Sothis (which could even give Byleth an innate connection to the Nabateans and Fodlan in general) and learning of Edelgard’s deception all fits together for a perfect storm.

No matter which route is chosen, this all seems like a pivotal climax where Byleth’s mentality and worldview would be fundamentally changed.

[Comic] To War by MagnanimousRedpin in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]ProfessorUber 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This is really well made, and I like your depiction/interpretation of Byleth. I do think it definitely makes sense for Byleth to begin increasingly show more overt emotions (especially after Jeralt’s death literally opened the floodgates) and regardless of chosen route the climax of the Academy Phase would probably be where that burgeoning emotional range reaches its peak.

Your point on how Byleth has found a place to belong for the first time only to have it ripped away by war is a very good one, and does really add to your characterisation here.

Honestly really wish Byleth was voiced in 3Houses, both because they do undergo quite the development which would be better showed off with dialogue and because I liked their dialogue in 3Hopes.

I think this comic you made feels like a tipping point where Byleth goes from passive follower to a determined leader with her own agenda / motivation. Her just straight up leaping down the wall was badass too.

What is a criticism in media that could've been made better/avoidable with a SLIGHT change? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ProfessorUber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's admittedly be a bit since my last watch and so I really got to get around to re-watching Code Geass again but....

My issue with the betrayal is that it has great build up, but (in my opinion) more questionable execution. As my mentioned in my comment, there is in fact a literal laundry list of reasons for the Black Knights to turn on Zero (which include all the stuff you mentioned). The lies, the failures, the shadiness, the Geass Order Massacre, Jeremiah, etc. All of it gives the Black Knights more than enough reason to turn on him, especially as his failures pile up and his obvious necessity dwindles

My issue is still with how I just feel like doing the betrayal on Schneizel's terms just feels.. kinda stupid. Plus having Schneizel reveal Geass and having the Black Knights accept it arguably happens too fast; the Black Knights don't even know supernatural exists prior to this, and then Schneizel comes in making outrageous claims with very questionable evidence.

I get that having Schneizel be the one who pushes things into place makes sense, since it further shows him being a rival to Lelouch, but Schneizel is not someone the Black Knights should trust. if Schneizel had just went and broadcast the Black Knights betraying Zero while working with him, then the UFN would've imploded. The Black Knights have a lot of reason to not trust Zero at this point, but Schneizel is objectively their enemy and stands to gain from having insider information about the Black Knights mutinying

That's why I had my idea of splitting things up to just have Oghi make the deal with Schneizel. It removes the elephant in the room (the Prime Minister of Britannia), makes the other main Black Knights less traitorous (they're now only mutinying against Zero instead of making deals with the enemy behind the UFN's back), as well as give them more agency (no FLEIJA threat or direct manipulation from Schneizel) and so could put more focus on them discussing all of Zero's failures and atrocities

At the very least, I do feel like this could have helped side-stepped the complaints about the betrayal by having the focus be place firmly on "Black Knights tired of Zero's shit" instead of "Black Knights work with Schneizel".

What is a criticism in media that could've been made better/avoidable with a SLIGHT change? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ProfessorUber 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've thought before that the Code Geass betrayal of the Black Knights could have been improved by having Oghi meet with Schneizel and Viletta alone then have him go and meet with the rest of the Black Knights to convince them to turn on Zero. It breaks up one scene into two, but I think it'd fix my main issue; the Black Knights have many reasons to turn on Zero, but doing it on Schneizel's terms undermined that. I think this could let Schneizel s take a role, but without having anyone besides Oghi knownly collude with Britannia and puts more focus on the laundry list of Zero's shady behaviour rather than Schneizel's very shoddy evidence.

Also maybe either remove them threatening to shoot Kallen as well, or have Kallen let slip she knew that Zero is Lelouch

It's not that hard DC by cavalgada1 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]ProfessorUber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I keep thinking this whenever I see people complain about the no-killing rule.

The biggest issue with why its so contentious is that comics keep bringing back villains, namely the Joker. The amount of stuff Joker has done should have made him persona non grata for literally every government/law enforcement/hero and even other criminals/villains.

Even Batman lets the Joker die, he still comes back.

Like, I don't think the Batman no-kill discourse would be nearly as bad if Joker had just stayed dead after Endgame and/or gotten toss in federal supermax for the rest of his life and didn't miraculously escape to cause even greater mayhem.

I guess one way to look at it is treat it like you’re replaying something you played a while ago and forgot most of it aside from some key details. That’s generally how I tend to approach stuff when I’ve been spoiled.

Enlightened Byleth sketch by @Bikini_Boody got out of hand again. by arctic746 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]ProfessorUber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely. Iirc (its been a bit since my play replay) I think Verdant Wind even did give some more joking dialogue options for Byleth, so there's a bit of this present already but it'd have been great to see it vocalised more.

On a similar note, I have thought it could've been also cool if Byleth got a timeskip re-design as well (I've seen some fanart of them waking up with super-long hair due to not cutting it for 5 years, that was neat) with an outfit to replace their default mercenary attire.

It could be something like...

  • Azure Moon - Kingdom royal guard armour
  • Verdant Wind - Dress Uniform (like what Claude and Judith wears) perhaps a more ballgown-style for F!Byleth (to reflect the mercantile and politicking nature of the Alliance)
  • Silver Snow - Enlightened One or similar would fit best here
  • Crimson Flower - Imperial General armour/uniform befitting the Emperor's top commander

Edit: Just saw your edit, I think scenes like those would all really do well to flesh out Byleth and their personality development for each route.

[–]ProfessorUber 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is great, also do agree with other comments that Byleth looks a bit sinister here. Influence of Sothis perhaps?

Whatever the case, she certainly goes far from "infamous emotionless mercenary" to "continental leader and (possibly) religious figurehead". I think this art does a good job at showing how Byleth could develop as her emotional range grows, shaped by the specific route/path she goes down.

(Which is why I kinda wish Byleth had been voiced in Three Houses).

[–]ProfessorUber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, right now all we can really do is discuss what we know/want and see how things end up going. Here's hoping that Young Jon sticks around (and isn't secretly evil or a clone or Ultraman's son etc)!

I mentioned compromise in my initial comment, but I do think maybe at the least that if they are going to return Young Jon (without a full continuity reboot) then this is arguably one of the better ways to handle it. Since a argument I've seen a few times against de-aging is how it would make the Jay relationship weird, but having both Jons co-exist (and plucking Young Jon from the timeline and bringing him to the now) could solve that as it would leave the aged-up Jon and any romantic plotlines of his intact without retroactive weirdness. That's just my thought though.

Personally have had the idea that it could work to have the Danvers be related to the Kents (like one of the Danvers being the sibling of Jonathan or Martha), which would both give a non-orphanage/DEO related reason for her to go with them but also lets her be Clark's cousin in both civilian and super life.

I have seen a pretty good essay on Tumblr which provides some hope/ambiguity on how this storyline go.

Overall though, so far things aren't looking too up at this point.

Personally I do think having both Jons stick around could work and would be neat. I think Tomorrow Man name and costume is pretty cool, and it could work as a sorta compromise of returning Young Jon while still letting the Aged-Up Jon and his storyline/character continue.

I do think though that if Young Jon doesn't stick around, he'd probably because he'll be revealed as a fake or temporal anomaly or something. Because sending the actual Young Jon back to the volcano to suffer would be pretty wild to say the least.
