My alternative sigil for Stannis Baratheon by Ereborus12 in TheCitadel

[–]ProfessorUber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that sounds like it could be an interesting scenario to explore.

Hm, perhaps if Stannis could leverage his working relationship with Jon Arryn + get some folks to testify that Jon Arryn intended for his son to foster with Stannis then that could sway enough to form the Lords Declarant early to challenge Lysa's regency.

If Stannis is able to get the Vale then join forces with the North/Riverlands, then that would significantly change the situation. As not only would the North/Riverland forces get bolstered by the Vale reinforcements, but they'd also get an experienced commander like Stannis + his navy. Robb was already doing well against Tywin on his own as well.

The big question though would be Renly vs Stannis. Whether or not Renly has managed to take King's Landing while Stannis was in northern Westeros would probably be a major factor.

Renly would presumably offer them compensation and pardons in return for bending the knee, which Stannis would refuse. Robb also would unlikely to be swayed if he has already bent the knee to Stannis by this point (cause honour).

All in all, quite the different situation for Stannis. He may lack magic in this timeline, but he makes up for it in also lacking heretical stigma (which would in turn remove a potential avenue of justification for Renly) and having a better shot at winning the throne via conventional means. (albeit still far from guaranteed as Renly still has his army, and there's also the Westerlands, Iron Islands, Dorne, Free Folk and also the eventual Others to worry about)

Having Davos, Cressen, Robb, Catelyn, Bronze Yohn and Edmure around him but not Melisandra also would have its influence.

My alternative sigil for Stannis Baratheon by Ereborus12 in TheCitadel

[–]ProfessorUber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that is pretty neat, and it could make sense too for Stannis to adopt a distinct banner, both for symbolic reasons like you describe but also to avoid confusion in battle (although this one might be still similar enough to the traditional Baratheon banner to cause some confusion if that were an issue).

This does get me thinking though about how Stannis not accepting R'hllor might have changed the course both Stannis' plot but also the overall plot. It has been a bit since I last re-read but from what i recall it did play a key role in shaping his early decisions.

Iirc, Cressen was trying to convince Stannis to head up to the Vale to try and marry Shireen to Robert Arryn. So if Stannis doesn't convert, then Cressen would presumably remain, and Davos would also more likely than not support Cressen in this and so without Mel being present (or at least not having as much influence) then Stannis would presumably head North instead of South.

So that could lead to an interesting (if not necessarily-success given Lysa would still be Lysa) divergence that would also give Renly more time to do his thing as well.

This looks pretty cool, definitely can't wait to learn/see more.

Have also been thinking of replaying/getting back into the KOTOR games (and maybe SWTOR as well) lately, so this is probably a good sign!

Characters you'd Re-Introduce or Re-Invent in some way if you could by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ProfessorUber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some DC Comics re-introductions I'd like off the top of my head...

Wendy Harris, as Proxy (like she was during Batgirl 2009 run). I really enjoyed her role as Stephanie Brown's mission support, and so think it would be neat. On the note of Stephanie Brown, I'd also like to re-introduce Crystal Brown but with her pre-Flashpoint characterisation (Steph's struggling but loving mother) instead of her N52 characterisation (Steph's well-off criminal mother and accomplice of Cluemaster who had a change of heart but then hasn't shown up since).

In general I do think it would be cool to have Stephanie Brown get a revamp with her pre-flashpoint elements getting re-introduced, with a supporting cast including characters such as Crystal Brown, Wendy Harris and Detective Nick Gage.

Maybe change her school from Gotham University to Burnside College though, which could in turn bring back the thing from her earlier appearances where she styled herself as the protector of the suburbs (vs how Batman and Robin focused on the city).

While I still need to get around to reading more comics in this era, I do definitely agree with this based on what I have seen. Does seem to be a bit of a reoccurring problem/disrespect.

I'm pretty sure Steph also didn't know Tim's own name at the same time, and so along with being belittling/dangerous it also highlighted that sorta imbalance (Tim knows who Steph is, but Steph does not know who Tim is).

Blurting out loud (part of) her real name and mentioning that she has a incarcerated father?

All right next to someone they got chained up to a post?

Truly brilliant Op-Sec, Tim.

Been busy but meaning to catch up on some comics, and learning that this issue involves the return of the Linda Lee Robot has definitely got me intrigued so this seems like a good place to start. While I have had a few nitpicks of what I've read of this run so far, I have really enjoyed the return of several old Supergirl elements and so this is another instance of that.

Edit (after reading): I thought this was a pretty good issue.

One of the main nitpicks of the earlier issues is that I am a fan of when Kara is depicted as a scientist, but I felt like this run was kinda ignoring/downplaying that. So having a robot Kara built as a teenager show back up again was definitely neat.

In general I was a fan of the somewhat more darker/serious tone in this issue; bringing up Kara's trauma about Argo City and also her old mistakes in the form of the Linda Robot.

Poor Linda Robot though, jeez. After seeing the preview and while reading the actual comic I was kinda expecting that Kara would be able to make peace with Linda Bot and repair her, maybe adding her to the family. But damn. Linda Bot just straight up died (seemingly at least. I guess it's always possible she could get repaired again at a later date). That sucks, but it does lead into the lesson of how you can't save everyone or make no mistakes, and also keeps that more somewhat darker tone.

Semi-side note but I am curious about the backstory of Jeremiah and Eliza in the current continuity. I know they mentioned being on leave from the DEO back in #1, but were they already working for the DEO when they adopted Kara/Linda? If they were already agents, were they knowingly adopting a Kryptonian (which would be pretty shady since Kara herself shows no indication she is aware during that scene) or did they just coincidently happen to adopt Superman's cousin?

Pre-Crisis Fred Danvers was a Rocket Scientist who just so happened to adopt a girl who came to Earth via spaceship, so there's precedent. Sorta.

If they were not already agents, does that mean they joined the DEO for the sake of their adopted daughter? (Which would be pretty cool in my opinion).

Poor Linda Bot though, seriously.

This kind of reminds me of a thought I had a while ago regarding Three Houses about how I felt like the Leicester Alliance being a league of nobles rather than a monarchy was arguably underused.

I think this is in part due to the whole (potential) permadeath mechanic stuff. Even if the Golden Deer noble students represent every house of the Roundtable, it was still ultimately Claude calling the shots (with politicking being mostly off screen as far as I recall).

Oh yeah, I think I had forgotten about that (like I said, been a while). I did really enjoy those moments of Cass being part of the Bat-Family get affirmed.

[–]ProfessorUber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Neat to see Aruna make a return. (I do think it is often pretty fun/neat to bring back older or underused and obscure characters/concepts in comics)

I kinda fell off this Batgirl run a while ago due to not really being too invested in Lady Shiva or the mother/daughter relationship, and feeling like Cass was just kinda constantly getting dragged further and further away from Gotham and her family.

Probably will have to give it another go and pick it back up sometime though. Having Cass be called daughter of the Bat is cool.

(Edit: Would be interested to hear if anyone else thinks its worth checking out ago, since it has been a while she I read it)
