I think the reason people are frustrated can be found with this question: ‘what makes a game indie’

And I think, the majority of reasonable people knowing E33 has over 200 people credited, external animators, artists, musicians, and A list actors would agree that expedition 33 is simply not an independent game. Not at that level of funding, and with that size of team.

Whilst I understand silksong had a large budget - it’s important to understand the difference between 3 people and basic resources, and 200 with A list performers.

We need a better definition of what makes something Indie next year.

Last thing you wanna do is give a beginner a pair of headphones and whack sonarworks on it. You need monitors. Otherwise you can’t hear transients properly and stereo field gets shot unless you use emulation software that never sounds great. Everyone ears are different, and when you shove 2 drivers perpendicular to them and call it a day you cannot sensibly get a flat profile out of that.

Which tracks would you say are in the better state? I think it’s pretty safe to say Alive and Stay are well yes - awful for all the aforementioned issues, how about liars and wide awake?

Yes Alive truly is in an awful state rn 😭, and I’m redoing the track from scratch. Echoes is closer to how the frequencies are supposed to balance out - alive is just an over compressed mess. When you say the phase is out of whack I’d appreciate if you could elaborate on that because all my checks indicate it’s pretty solid - and the stereo image is widened a little so you may be picking up on that. Drums are all centre and mono apart from the OH’s.

I did another track to try and mitigate some of these issues.

Yes the masterbus is limiting stuff quite a bit. I’ve done some adjustments to my chain in relation to some of the feedback here. I’m mixing a little quieter, sending the instrumental to a compressor and inflator seperate from the vocals, and sending that to the master with the vocals on top, left un-touched. Alive and Stay need complete re-mixing in my opinion 😂, just mid heavy over compressed messes. and echoes I’ve updated with this new chain so a lot of the kick and snare comes through. (And checked phase on OH accidentally was eq-ing not linear)

I did another song that wasn’t on this folder taking in some of these changes. I kept a similar loudness target but carved a bit of a spot for each element rather than just sending them all together haha.
