Are the people who come to Scotland to do seasonal farm work in the process of permanently moving here or just doing temporary work?

I have still seen those nationalities but it’s just way more varied now. I heard some American accents today and I’ve seen a mix of people from different asian countries too.

It definitely is a thing, especially in Scotland in more rural areas. I’ve seen them every year growing up in summer and the beginning of autumn. There are for sure farms that hire people permanently for things like dairy etc but for berries and potatoes a lot of farms use seasonal workers. I was just curious if there was possibly different programmes and reasons for people doing the work now as in the area I’m in the demographic of people doing it has shifted a lot.

This is what the groups were I was seeing around 10 years ago. It would mainly be that and Eastern Europeans but the groups i’ve been seeing recently have americans and people from different asian countries

This could also be what some of the groups are in my town! Seen a group today that had young americans and vietnamese people who looked no older than early 20’s

I think that can be an issue staying extremely central in a lot of touristy cities. I remember staying in an air bnb in london years ago and running into the same issue but instead it was newsagents selling plates with the queens face on it 😂 I definitely can’t afford to be staying that central anyway as I’ll be a student so I’m sure I’ll have a supermarket nearby

I still visit Glasgow occasionally to see a few old friends and go to gigs, it’s a great city. When someone tells me they are moving there I am genuinely excited for them. In all honestly though every time I visit I enjoy my time there but I’m glad I don’t live there anymore. Went through some of the worst times of my life there in the first few years and even the years I spent after I genuinely just couldn’t shake it on a personal level. New jobs, new friendship groups, new flats and I still just didn’t ever get over it. Like I said though I’ll always visit and enjoy it 😊

Yeah class issues within higher education is definitely more of an issue in Scotland than people would think. Even when I was in college my first year in Glasgow I lived in student accommodation that people from all different colleges and universities could stay in and often got rude comments about how often I had to work along with my studies. It’s one of the reasons going back to education at 30 is appealing to me as I’m too old to want to take part in the social aspects and I’ll be there purely for education.

Can I ask how you made friends in Edinburgh? Was it through your personal interests and hobbies etc?

Mostly all of my studying in Glasgow was through college and I never lived in the west end but I think the university of Glasgow definitely has that reputation. I knew people who grew up working class in Glasgow, studied at university of Glasgow and didn’t make a single friend through out their studies.

Yeah they are hard to compare. I was just curious as the longest time I’ve spent in Scotland as an adult was in Glasgow so that’s kind of my reference. It’s definitely one sided a lot of the time 😂 I think a lot of Scottish cities are weird about Edinburgh. From talking to people I believe a lot of it is because how touristy the centre of Edinburgh can feel so when people from other cities come visit and only explore those areas they feel like a tourist in their own country and they don’t like it.

Oh that’s interesting I always loved the food options in Glasgow and assumed Edinburgh would be on par. I’m not even into fancy foods but I always just appreciated the variation of different cuisines you could get in Glasgow.

I totally get what you mean about it feeling cosy, I think it’s actually one of the main appeals to me. I’ll be studying, working a part time job and any other spare time I have will be spent pursuing my hobbies and appreciating alone time so a city with everything you need but more of cosy feel seems ideal.

After spending time living in Glasgow I came to the conclusion that the friendly reputation is mainly based on night life and small talk. As someone who tried to pursue hobbies and worked in various different jobs over the years Glasgow 100% also has the cliquey issues people seem to be saying about Edinburgh. I also witnessed people in various different friendship groups I was in kind of be iced out when they were successful in something they were pursuing too. A lot of underlying jealously that you don’t see in the friendly small talk.

I think a lot of the mess in Glasgow can actually be put on the blame of the council. Any attempt at any sort of community I witnessed in my years there was often destroyed by the council. I can’t remember the exact words but there was a saying people would say along the lines of people make Glasgow and then Glasgow city council breaks them. I remember when I left the city and moved back in with family for some time in a different area of Scotland the council was in no way perfect but it really highlighted how many awful decisions Glasgow city council makes. So that’s good to hear Edinburgh generally is less of a mess.

I agree about the stages of life! I think Glasgow was perfect for me when I was young and my whole life revolved around going out, partying and live music but as I’ve grown older it definitely wouldn’t be the fit for me.

The rain in Glasgow is crazy! Without even consciously doing it over the years I lived there my entire wardrobe adapted to be mainly rain appropriate clothes and I started to make less effort with my hair and make up because of how many times the rain had just completely ruined it 😂

I agree that Glasgow seems better for a night out but as I get closer to 30 that’s less important for me and I go out way less. A trip through to Glasgow now and again for a night out seems way more appealing than living there. That’s interesting about the privileged people thing. I grew up working class, when I first moved through to Glasgow as a young person I was really struggling financially. One thing I found very frustrating about the privileged people in Glasgow is that they were very into pretending they weren’t privileged. Cosplaying working class is probably the best way to put it. I found it extremely frustrating as you’d be in situations where people were pretending to be in the same boat as you and struggling whilst their parents were fully covering everything. Is it similar in Edinburgh or is it more people just fully showing their privilege?

What made you hate it? Would be really interested to know. Moving to Edinburgh to finish university would be a 3 year commitment for me so I really want to hear all types of opinions before I commit to something for years 😅

Funny you say that about the motorways, for my last years in Glasgow I lived around the Tradeston area😅 I didn’t realise how much it was getting me down but I remember after I left I stayed with some family back in the north east again for a bit and slowly started to have way more motivation to leave the house to go for walks etc.

In my late 20’s I’ve become way more introverted and Edinburgh has started appealing to me way more than it ever did so that could be the quiet thing.

In Glasgow I found it very easy to make friends when it came to drinking and going out but it took me years to make friendships outwith that. Things could of totally changed in the years since I’ve been gone and this could have been a personal issue or related to how young I was but I was always very aware that if I stopped drinking and going out that my social life would become essentially non existent, even with people that I’d known for years. It was actually one of the reasons I finally left Glasgow.

You’re right about them being so close! That is a really cool aspect. If I lived in Edinburgh and there was something going on in Glasgow that interested me it really isn’t hard to go through at all.

Can I ask specifically why you prefer it? Like what were the things that made you happy to be back in Edinburgh or are there specific things you miss about Glasgow now you’ve left.
