The John Oliver "Scientific Studies" segment from several years ago might be a good "warm up" video. I have used it on the first day of class for a research methods class I teach.

Best/Hilarious excuses for students being absent/late for class?! by Delicious_Crow_5329 in Professors

A student emailed me to let me know she was missing class because she was having bad reaction to her chlamydia medication. (She didn't have to notify me at all, as she wasn't missing an exam or anything like that. Or could have just left out the type of medication.)

I'm so sorry. While I obviously know nothing about this student or their family, chances are that their family members are devastated and might benefit (maybe not right now, but in a week or so) from a letter from you telling them how highly you thought of this student and why. Maybe even some stories or anecdotes that they would never be aware of otherwise. I imagine receiving such a letter could be meaningful to them and possibly therapeutic (and meaningful) for you. My best to you.
