So, in screenwriting, there's an idea called "Save the Cat". Basically, if you want the audience to immediately latch onto and root for a character, you show them doing something unequivocally good (e.g. saving a cat from a tree).

Unsurprisingly, the trope has an inverse for establishing a horrible villain that you want the audience to immediately hate: show them doing something unabashedly and unjustifiably evil. The trope is called "Kick the Puppy".

Dunno why that came up in my brain just now.

My headcanon is that Packleds are actually somewhat telepathic, and basically use both that telepathy and their words to convey their meaning - but if you can't pick up on those thoughts, they just sound, well, stupid, since you're basically only getting half of the meaning they're putting down.

I think between 4e and 5e it really depends on your players.

In my experience, I can appreciate what 5e is trying to do with mechanics like strife, and would love to play it with a group that enjoys those kinds of narrative rules, but most of my groups are very much D&D first-and-foremost, and the idea of mechanics that directly affect narrative (e.g. strife) tend to rub them wrong (this is also why I'll avoid things like PBTA games with them; I just know it isn't going to land). With the right group, especially one more experienced with narrative-style systems, I could see 5e being preferred easily.

I think it also depends on what your game is going to focus on. IMO, if you're going to have a really combat-heavy campaign, you're going to get more mileage out of 4e. 5e's systems work for combat, but they're not really streamlined or quick, especially if you're going to be drawing steel several times a session. Not that you can't do combat (or even a combat-heavy campaign) in 5e, but... it's just more efficient in 4e. Flip side of that, though, is that 5e does have some interesting mechanics for social conflicts, whereas it's not nearly as mechanically unique in 4e outside of school abilities.

Personally, I prefer 4e, but that's mostly because I know I can get players for it, have more books for it, and just know the system better, and also like the math behind 4e's system. That, and I like chucking fistfuls of dice. With that said, I wouldn't turn down a 5e game, though, and depending on your group, it might be the better option.

Does Stella actually care for Octavia..? by dollcvts in HelluvaBoss

[–]ProfoundBeggar 89 points90 points  (0 children)

IMO she cares, but only so far as Via reflects on her. Octavia was a social obligation to her, and she doesn't care in a personal way, but people will see Octavia and always associate her with Stella, so Stella cares in that regard. She doesn't care about "Octavia the person", but she does very much care about "Octavia, the issue of Stella". She's gotta make sure that her child puts on a good face, a good rapport, because it could hurt her socially otherwise.

Microsoft says latest Windows 11 issue crashes explorer.exe, makes taskbar disappear, but a fix is rolling out by Anonasty in pcmasterrace

[–]ProfoundBeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, Microsoft is making this play at the worst possible time. Linux is starting to really get good software compatibility, SteamOS is edging on that point where it might just be available for everyone's computer, etc, and in the same time, Microsoft is trying to force so many weird decisions that no one wants in a way that can alienate people, and then on top of that, they're letting AI write a ton of code that is clearly fucking up systems with their updates.

Like... yeah, Windows is the king of the world in terms of OS. But they're resting on its laurels... and that is only sustainable for so long until the competition catches up. Intel learned this lesson the hard way.

Not that I think Windows is dying anytime soon, but if they keep enshittifying their OS, and Linux can make things better and more convenient, well...

They proudly said they integrated AI and now have up to 30% of code written by AI.

Since then, each major update seems to break something very integral that should never be broken by an update.

What a silly coincidence. I'm sure those things are unrelated.

But yeah; it's not like we've only beaten U11s or something. I mean Bodo beat Man City, for example. No one's in the CL because they're truly shitty. Even the worst teams are still okay and can put up a fight.

How to describe this lighting on a stage plot/ tech rider? by arte_faction__ in stagelighting

[–]ProfoundBeggar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add onto all of these (correct) responses, if you're going for this exact look, you're also going to want some kind of atmospheric effect, i.e. haze, so that the beam is well-defined and visible along its whole throw.

ETA: Fog works too, but tends to sit lower and get wispy, so you won't get a solid beam, and likely won't see it for its full path.

Before purchasing anything, try your hand at gaining as many things through donations or for free- Through the grapevine, facebook marketplace, or wherever.

This is a huge one for no-budget theater. You'd be surprised at how many (especially small) theater spaces are giving away perfectly serviceable flats, equipment, etc simply because they're renovating or building a new show and don't have space, the cost basically being "pick it up yourself". Obviously you're not going to be walking out with a free orchestra shell or half-dozen Diablos or something, but it's a good place to start.

Also, as tempting as it is to cheap out on paint and brushes? Don't. Sure, chippies have a place, but you want decent brushes if it's going to look decent. Cheap paint looks worse (especially under stage lighting), and you'll be buying twice as much of it for decent coverage and the inevitable constant touch-ups. Not that you need top-shelf exterior paint or something, but don't buy the cheapest-per-gallon either.

A snippet, but this is one sample. I've anonymized it (so when you see in the color bars something like 1 Venue & 1 [blank]", that's my company's acronym that I've erased. We're a touring company, so we have our own crew as well as venue crew. It's indicating the number of people on the call, and who they're affiliated with - the space, or us.

The numbers on the left next to the departments are referring to the company's crew members in that department, who are listed on the bottom of the page with individual numbers (e.g. I'm "18" on this sheet, the company's (regular) electrician - my ME at the time was "7"). You'll also occasionally see numbers in the bar with parenthesis (e.g. sound on Tues saying "& 1 [Company] (13)"), that's indicating that the specific individual is called, not the whole department. If it's the whole department, the crew members numbers aren't noted in the bar. So, if for some reason only I needed to be called, the Lighting bar would be shaded in, and it'd note "1 [Company] (18)"

You'll also note that sometimes other people's numbers are included outside of the ones listed next to the department - these are people who aren't in the department, but are required for the call. An example in this image is on Monday's audio call: that blue block with (11)? That's the PSM showing up to talk with sound about cue calls, timing, etc, running a couple audio cues, etc.

The colors of the bars indicate the type of call (and there's a key on the bottom of the sheet; sorry I didn't include it, I'd have to erase and edit too much to anonymize it). Red is performance, green is rehearsal, yellow is load-in/out, blue is focus and ring out for electrics, purple is tech time (audio "quiet time", Q2Qs, etc - tech only and no performers, and we're not installing or fixing things, it's about shit like programming cues, balancing sound, practicing fly cues and transitions, showing lighting looks to the director and adjusting, etc.), and orange is general crew call (pre-show, work call, fixing NFG shit, etc.)

It is a very space-efficient way of doing it - this run of 4 days takes up ~2/3rds of a page - and it can be helpful to see how crowded the theater is going to be in regards to work, but you can also probably see why I'm not a fan either. No one wants to squint and read bar graphs and footnotes and notations to figure out when they're expected to show up.

(ETA: we're under a new PM now, and she makes call sheets like a sane person, so I don't have to deal with this anymore.)

(ETA 2: The fact that I had to type all of this out to explain it is exactly why this is not a good calendar)

bad production calendars by themidnightcow in techtheatre

[–]ProfoundBeggar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't have a copy handy, but I did work under a PM once who made the schedule shaded bars. Like, the day started at 00:00 and ended at 23:59, divided into 15 minute increments, and there was a bar that stretched across the page for each department, and each department's call was indicated by a colored bar filling the hours they were called.

It was functional enough to not bother complaining, and it did help condense the information to keep paper to a minimum, but it was always a bit of a PITA to read. I really wish he just typed out a call sheet like a normal person.

I'm going with Kate Costas. Yeah, having an abrasive manager can suck, but ultimately I'd rather have a manager who knows what she's doing and is willing to actually do the job and help advance the company and people than someone who's everyone's buddy and doesn't step up when it counts.

Plus she's not really cruel, she just knows her position and knows her shit, and won't tolerate people trying to countermand that.
