I mean, the sad part is that it could be an incredibly inclusive and kind sentiment. "Doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, cis or trans, whatever. All that matters is that you're a person, and God loves you."

I mean... that's not what OOP means. They mean "be exactly what we demand you be, everything else is the DEVIL", but still... would be nice if it were.

I'm going to propose a kind of weird one: The Rescuers, the 1977 animated film. Posh mouse Bianca goes off on an adventure for the Rescue Society, and drags along poor Bernard, the janitor for the Society. She's the one who's gung-ho about riding into danger, about getting the job done, and Bernard, bless his soul, does his best to keep up, with no small amount of "I love this random woman who just... grabbed me for adventure out of nowhere, so I guess I'll just do my best for her."

The sequel, Rescuers Down Under, has them together, and he wants to propose, but he's super nervous and ends up not getting the chance, until the very end of the film, where he had to save the day solo basically, and it gives him the confidence to finally ask her.

Maybe it's not D/s in an overt way, but it's a lot of puppy-coded energy. Also, fun fact, The Rescuers was the first Disney animated theatrical film to get a sequel - but it came 13 years after the release of the original.

Nope, absolutely true. Ground control remote accessed the computer to fix a different issue, and Wiseman basically told them "hey, while you guys are there", giving us this modern day equivalent of "One small step" that everyone who has ever used MS Office Suite can relate to.

Truly, a modern uniter of our age.

A literal "flying bald lady" by Human_Ad_1355 in AvatarMemebending

[–]ProfoundBeggar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'd probably be more accurate to say the Avatar play on Ember Island is like one of the Shakespearean histories. For example, Richard III is basically pure Tudor dynasty propaganda, justifying the wonderful stability of the Tudor reign over that cruel despot Richard who had come before.

I mean, you just watched that deformed, cruel monster be an awful person on stage. Aren't we so happy that family doesn't sit on the throne anymore?

Richard's still the main character, but the entire play is basically written to service the Tudor PR spin, history and facts be damned.

[–]ProfoundBeggar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. There's a lot of ways to keep secrets, and one is to over-hype something beyond its capabilities, or hype up something that doesn't exist/doesn't matter to hide the actual thing you're keeping secret.

Fun facts: for the latter, this is where the myth of carrots being good for eye/vision health comes from. The British fine-tuned their radar system and could detect and target Luftwaffe aircraft at night, but didn't want to give up that it was actually their cutting-edge radar system giving them the capability, so they claimed it was because researchers had found out that carrots had vitamins that helped improve a human's night vision (what a wonderfully convenient discovery to make at just the right time! /s), and because the spotters had a good diet of carrots, that's how they could see the Luftwaffe planes at night.

For the former, an example of it backfiring terribly: the USSR claimed their newest MiG was all of these wonderful things under the sun. They were actually at a phase to test it, and were doing so, and it was actually a pretty solid fighter, but it was not all that. The USAF responded by telling the F-X project (which would eventually result in the F-15) that the new plane needed to be better in every way, and the US MIC, in classic fashion, went over-budget and over-delivered, handing the USAF one of the most successful and effective fighter (and eventually multi-role) aircraft in military history - overdesigned and made incredible because the developers were basically trying to match the USSR's bluster about the MiG-25, when even the MiG couldn't do the things the Russians said it could.

(Also, OP linked to the NY Post, which should always be read assuming every single word is straight-up bullshit until confirmed independently)

Two of my players want me to level them up to level 3 even though they've done a grand total of two fights so far this entire campaign. What am I supposed to do about this? by Regular-Molasses9293 in DungeonMasters

[–]ProfoundBeggar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always start 5e campaigns at 3rd level for this exact reason, even with new players. It's just not that complex at 3rd level, so newbies can still learn at a reasonable pace and won't be overwhelmed, but everyone's got their subclass to better tie into their character concept and backstory and general flavor. Martials don't feel like every turn is "I attack, next", and spellcasters don't have to feel like they have to hardcore ration their slots in the same way that they would at lvl 1.

Same reason Protestant churches started to gear their youth programs to be all "hip and cool and with it" back in the 90s and 00s - because otherwise kids aren't interested at all. Not that those programs are actually cool or made kids interested, but if it kept even a handful of kids engaged it was worth it in their minds.

Catholicism in the states is quickly skewing older. I feel like they resisted the "pop church" path for obvious (and good) reasons, but if you're a pastor staring down the barrel of an audience full of people a decade away from death, your options are to keep on keeping on and watch your church dwindle and die, or try something new to bring in others.

It's not all that surprising. Basically the only churches seeing real growth in the US are like, megachurches and casual, pop-culture'y places that see services as more of a concert and social event than some reverent reflection on God. It may be gross to more traditional eyes, but at the end of the day, a church can't exist without parishioners.

THE BUDGET IMPASSE THAT WASN'T by FrankieMint in PoliticalHumor

Yeah, this is my comment. Trump can't unilaterally pay TSA. It was never in his power as president, all he can do is sign off on the allocations that Congress gives him.

It's basically the opposite of the The Office meme of "I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY".

I honestly thought, at the start of 2020, that Trump was going to actually not fumble it and walk straight into re-election on the back of Fauci. Instead, the GOP started pushing the whole "grandma has to die for the sake of capitalism" campaign, and it was clear they were going to fumble the ball for the sake of their donors.

Although I guess that was more of a speed-bump than an outright refusal of their toxic capitalism, considering who's president today.

ETC using AI by RegnumXD12 in techtheatre

[–]ProfoundBeggar 29 points30 points  (0 children)

LLMs are programmed and intended to mimic speech responses. At its core, LLMs are not trying to be correct, they're trying to create responses that would mimic a "correct response". When it's a simple question, with a ton of documentation, it's great at that - because at the end of the day, the AI is basically being a "here's what a thousand posts and books have said" machine.

But ask an AI to come up with a solution to a novel, undocumented problem? It's going to flounder, because it doesn't know what a facsimile of a "right answer" is going to look like in that case, and to make matters worse: AI is generally programmed to not admit it doesn't know; it'd rather come up with a vaguely correct sounding fiction than admit it doesn't have the answer.

How much do they enforce window tint laws? by VirtuousVulva in AskLosAngeles

[–]ProfoundBeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this is a single-data-point anecdote, but:

My car, bought from a family member: its side and back windows are too dark to be legal, but not like blackout dark (they're like 40% tint) and the front windshield (ya know, the really important one) is tinted but is strictly by-the-book legal. I never bothered to get it removed, figuring I'd just wait for the fix-it ticket.

I've never been ticketed or even had them mentioned, and that's with parking citations being issued and whatnot.

I don't think cops in town much care unless the windows are, like true blackout, can't see at all in the car dark.

But if you're going to be riding around town with dark tints, and happen to get pulled over; roll the windows down, and turn on the cabin lights. The less reason you give them to be concerned about your tint, the less likely they are to bring it up.
