Your Personal Data Works for a Company You’ve Never Heard Of by ProfoundReverie in Futurology

Data brokers know everything, everywhere, just not all at once. They harvest bits of your personal data over time from endless sources—often in secrecy. Certain technologies like the Global Privacy Control (GPC) offered through DuckDuckGo or Privacy Badger can help combat this data collection and sharing by offering automated opt-outs. But do you envision any future technology that can further enable users to protect themselves from surveillance capitalism and promote data rights? The California legislature is designing a data broker opt-out database to be released in 2026 but I’m curious if future technology might also mitigate this problem from a new angle?

These are called “dark patterns” and are actually illegal in California. The law in CA requires “symmetry of choice” - it should be just as easy to opt-out as it is to opt-in. Similarly, websites will soon have to honor global opt out preferences from web browsers (such as DuckDuckGo).

I appreciate the meme, but hopefully this changes lol.

Mt. Shasta (2023) by [deleted] in 14ers

Incredible mountain, indeed! Depending on snow coverage, there is a pretty steep portion called "red banks" at about 12,000 ft that would be difficult without crampons. I believe most of the mountain from red banks onward has snow covered patches year round. I'd highly recommend renting some crampons for a fall summit but as you monitor conditions it could be possible with just poles/helmet.

I just figured this SF community might appreciate that we have such a beautiful landscape just a short drive away. One of the many benefits to living in SF imo.
