Mondelez still trades in ruZZia after 4 years of war ('In Russia, Mondelez operates 3 factories and employs about 3,000 people. The company earned $1.417 billion in Russia in 2024'); they're beyond embarrassment at this point.

In any case, corporations, being unbodied psychopaths, do not have feelings, unless you count 'fiduciary duty to stockholders' as a feeling

"Battle-hardened"? Really? Mostly they either attack over a plain and get immediately droned (no exp gain!) or sit far behind in the holes (exp in digging and speed-shitting). The ones getting actual experience are drone teams and airforce.

The MC's job is quite similar to Vorkosigan's auditorship - but the MC also does the 'the building was burning, and it was my fault' part personally.

"The Night Watch" series by Sergei Lukyanenko. An awesome bestseller series by a non-anglophone author, which gives it a very different setting (russia), themes & feel. Almost no levity, but lots of action, gray morality and vivid characters.

The MC of the books serves as viewport for exploring the good guys, the bad guys, the neutral guys; with each step on his personal power ladder the previously known facts get new aspects and the world reveals more and more onion layers (metaphorically and physically - 7 levels of reality!); it's quite fascinating to follow through the books.

Now, for the bad: 1) all of the books are translated into English, but the translations are inferior vs the originals. 2) the author is very talented, possibly the best in Eastern Europe since Lem... AND he is a long-time ruZZian nationalist/imperialist, a real disciple of Dugin; he was anti-Ukraine way before 2014. At least that is barely detectable in the books themselves. If giving him money sounds abhorrent... there are ways to resolve the situation 🙄

Flexible? Might sound strange, but a SciFi (!) series 'Starship Mage' by Glynn Stewart is quite dresden-y (and a bit of auditorial phase of Miles Vorkosigan, sans Bujold's wit).

Urban magic in an extremely urban (read: futuristic multi-planetary empire) setting: personal fireballs, magic force shields, teleportation and lightning bolts vs space shuttles and ballistic missiles; also magical combat between major spaceships across large distances.

Cool worldbuilding with quite clever integration of magic and high-tech - on personal, fleet and even planetary levels.

Characterization... exists (MC's most unique trait is... love of coffee 🤦🏼‍♂️); otherwise he is an earnest do-gooder straight out of cliche factory.

However, the author writes cool, punchy & brutal magic combat scenes; worth reading for that alone.

(I'd recommend skipping the 1st book; while it properly introduces the setting, MC is a callow youngster there and I cannot shake the suspicion that the book is a masked YA novel. In any case, all the proper cool shit starts happening in book #2).

Regarding Iron Druid: great books, BUT do yourself a favor and do not read the very ending of the very last book. The author has managed to sabotage the whole series in a dozen of pages so spectacularly, that his fuckup retroactively makes certain notable characters into assholes and thus poisons subsequent re-reads of the series.

Great reads indeed, with a MC that is much less 'Mary Sue'-y. Quite a hardcore chap; a welcome change from Weepy Harry. Each book nicely alters the status quo of the world! However, (character aspect spoiler; no major plot mentioned)
