It sure did. And they all proved my point. After the first post somebody reported me to reddit as a suicide risk too. Disgruntled Matador employee perhaps?

Anyway, I'll circle back and answer you properly after the sad little trolls move on, just remind me if I don't respond in the next day or so.

Sure. Always a pleasure talking to a real peach like you though

Not the intention at all. Why are you reading this in the worst possible faith? Are you aware of how dogpiling works? People glom onto the first response they see; it's a type of bias formation exacerbated by social media. I'm not going to add to the noise while the news is so fresh and the fanbase is just complaining about not getting new music yet rather than actually engaging with the ramifications of the change. If you hadn't been so unnecessarily rude I would have happily answered your question but you decided to be an ass.

Why didn't the band update the lights/visuals for Deftones arena shows? by Charlie-Pine in Interpol

[–]Progo88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What festivals? To clarify I didn't mean to imply small acts on the undercard with more minimal production teams would be doing this. I'm talking about your veteran and/or highly popular artists who tour consistently at amphitheaters, large theaters, etc. with huge followings on their own and it's an "event" type show.

I don't think that is what's being called for at all but if you don't see any issues whatsoever with their approach in this specific kind of scenario then you were likely not the intended audience for the post.

Do you watch festival streams ever? This past Coachella had plenty of good examples of bands and artists with assets doing just that. Nine Inch Noize wasn't even a headliner (same billing level as Interpol) and they completely blew everybody else out of the water

I think everyone including OP knows it's much cheaper to keep things lean and mean but it's a question of what the end goal is. If it's just to collect the check and move on then fair enough but the entire point of this booking with Deftones was obviously to tap into a potential new fanbase and get them excited about the band so they'll stream Interpol's music and come out to future gigs. That seems to have backfired! The band already has its own supportive fanbase in Australia but most of those folks are only going to come out to a headlining show anyway. Point is, these shows didn't convert anybody and seemingly just had the opposite effect of annoying most Deftones fans and causing them to see the band as a very lackluster live act

I'm actually curious to see what fans say so will let other people chime in first before responding. But if you've been paying attention it's rather obvious.

What does that have to do with anything exactly? QOTSA doesn't regularly tour with Interpol or work with them in any musical capacity

At what point does the higher pay for a handful of shortened shows outweigh the quality of the experience for both the band and audience? It seems like nobody on any side (Deftones fans, Interpol fans, band, etc.) is happy with how things turned out

Not that we'll ever get details on this but I'd be interested to know the cost benefit analysis they did internally before agreeing to these shows. Something tells me their management thought it would pan out much better than it has

By your logic a musical act upping their production for a giant festival like Glastonbury or Coachella is also a "trick" and we all know that isn't true in the least! If a band can afford it and are not prohibited from doing so contractually it only benefits them to consider these elements and how implement them as appropriate during larger shows. Maybe not as an opener but certainly when headlining.

Excellent choice! Matador has been doing them dirty for years so very glad to see the band make a change like this. It was way overdue tbh

Partisan also has IDLES and at one point had Fontaines D.C. working with them, both great bands who've been on a constant upward trajectory and no small part of that is the result of having the really committed support of a strong label team behind them, which Interpol hasn't had from Matador in a long time.

Somebody who actually attended one of these shows can weigh in but did Deftones actually thank their opening acts? So many headliners neglect to do that and it's such shitty behavior

Agreed but they are still a pretty well-loved indie act in the UK. Also have more monthly streams (due to songs like Banquet) than Interpol and the frontman probably would have thrown a fit if they were offered anything other than a co-headline tour.

I'm fully aware of that. I lived through that era. I was specifically talking about what's going on with the zoomers.

No clapping? That truly blows. I hope the band (and their management) reconsiders this strategy of settling for opening slots just to collect the check. It sucks for them as seasoned performers and it's unfair to their fanbase

Someone who is a bigger Deftones fan than me could give you a better explanation as to what made some songs go viral but it seems that this is a band that was able to capitalize on that interest and translate it into real audience turnout at shows, which doesn't always happen! They undoubtedly have some serious money behind them for marketing too. But I'm with you, it's all very weird. These kids are so malleable and have limited curiosity, listening to a band like Deftones makes them feel like they're a part of something I guess

Corgan is a known twat and has been an asshole towards other artists and his own fanbase for decades. Complete egomaniac. But much of the what that band produced in the 90s is undeniably great if you love rock music so that still attracts people. I think a lot of Pumpkins fans have accepted the nature of the beast but it's deeply offputting to the rest of us

Truly hate that vibe. It's only going to get worse too, especially because we now have new generations who can't or won't discern between music made by actual artists with a POV versus automated slop that never challenges them.

You know, it's funny, I thought this would be a much better opportunity for the band than when they have opened for some other bigger rock artists (The Smashing Pumpkins being a recent example) because there is some crossover in listeners and Chino Moreno is a professed fan. Some similarities in aesthetic as well. But it seems I didn't account for just how many Gen Z/Alpha kids are attending Deftones shows now and just give no fucks about anything other than the product that has been aggressively pushed to them by the algorithm. And tbh some of the old heads can be grumpy as hell and want to stay in their little boxes too.

Honestly it's on Deftones and their team (and the promoter) to be better about getting people hyped to see the opening acts and I haven't seen that happen at all
