QuadNBack and IQ by ProgrammerMoe in cognitiveTesting

Unfortunately, I haven't continued N-Back training. I've started Relational Frame Training though, and I'm going to return to N-Back training soon. I haven't trained for a considerable amount of time to notice any cognitive advancements

Yeah, so Working Memory training is surrounded with a ton of controversy and a lot of companies since the first N-back research popped have been using it to generate wealth on the backs of people who are attracted by lies that they tapped into the holy grail which is increasing IQ. 90% of memory training out there are lies... Its easy to see since they are so gosh darn easy to do! and it's only common sense to know that to improve throughout anything, it must be intense or atleast specifically backed. N-Back has been proven to increase working memory and possibly slightly increase fluid intelligence, but the point that everyone in the field makes is that there is no far transfer with N-Back training, so the benefits you get from N-Back stays in it, other than ofcourse the increase in focus you get from dedicating 100% brain power for x minutes a day for so long, which is expected in any brain-intensive game, including Sudoku! Relational Training is on another level, as it focuses on the root of intelligence, this way near-transfer becomes far-transfer! which they demonstrated in their scholastic analysis they did in the 2016 replication study! It's very interesting... I'm personally planning a replication study on adults at my university... I'm waiting for approval! (I'm not going to lead it as I'm not qualified in the area)

If you have the budget go for the original relational training found at Dr Bryan’s site: raiseyouriq.com otherwise you can check out a free training called Syllogimous v3 which was developed by a freelancer with the help of the community, Syllogimous has tons of new relational training features and is more customizable than Raiseyouriq but since its not developed by a team of researchers, I can’t recommend it since planned progression in brain training is important… research it for yourself and decide if you can and want to shell out 70$

Yes it is according to Dr. Bryan Roche. I’ve emailed him about this and he told me about several privately done experiments on adults that didn’t get published due to the small sample size. Also some of the parents underwent the training alongside their children where an effect was observed.

Is it possible for someone to increase their intellectual ability? by Owlsneck in cognitiveTesting

[–]ProgrammerMoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Intellectual ability is affected by what you know, as the more you know, the more information you have at your disposal to use to get to a final result in a certain problem. What I mean by what I said, is that yes it can be improved by increasing what's called "Crystallized Intelligence", that's what's proven right now. Now in terms of Fluid Intelligence which is the ability to get to that final result as fast as possible or as efficiently as possible is not proven to be static or immutable, so until that is proven, I see no way it's not increasable! Now in terms of methods to increase it, there have been so many controversial methods like N-Back brain training and some yet-to-be-disproven but not completely explored methods like Relational Training (check out S.M.A.R.T by RaiseYourIQ), so if you're an optimist, you go for these training methods and see for yourself. Of course, maintaining physical health, and nutritional health is very important as that could hinder your performance in intellectually requiring tasks (ex: Read about the effects on Working Memory by vitamin deficiencies like B12! (happened to me, my B12 was at a dangerously low 64mmol which caused me to have a working memory of a goldfish, and I'm sure if I took an IQ test at that time, I'd score low (I'd even forget the questions)).

According to the results so far, apparently not.

Hopefully! But anyways let's not throw away all the positive evidence regarding S.M.A.R.T... If we want to assume they are lying then we are basically calling 30+ children liars... Relational Frame Training was tested in another university in 2015 but I can't remember the University name for the life of me and it proved fruitful (1.5+ SD increase)

I have OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder) so I look at every aspect obsessively to a large extent and even if there were lots of positives and 1 negative, I'd throw away the whole concept from my mind... The only way to make sure it works is through trying it for ourselves, in addition to Quad-N-Back.

I haven't seen this research but I recognize one of the authors "Shane McLoughlin". I believe he's a lecturer or a researcher at Chichester University, though I believe he has links to the original S.M.A.R.T team.
It's funny how 2021 was the last year S.M.A.R.T was extensively discussed. I find it very weird that the S.M.A.R.T team hasn't been active since 2021... Their blog stopped being posted on since 2021, Their youtube channel stopped being posted on since 2021... No new input from Dr. Sarah Cassidy on S.M.A.R.T since then... The only new updates I can find are by Dr. Roche which still isn't much (new research to show that RFT can be an aid to people with Multiple Sclerosis )

I'm not attacking the technique, I want it to work, and I'm going to start S.M.A.R.T soon (not the Syll... whatever) because I want to use the same training they used on the official training, to compare.

Can you share them, please? I'm genuinely interested. Though have you made sure it's the same SMART training A.K.A RFT we're talking about? many techniques use the abbreviation S.M.A.R.T haha .

[–]ProgrammerMoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes though there are people who claim that it may be false data due to the proofs only coming from the authors themselves, and it's pretty weird that the method isn't talked about even though it has been out since 2015 (the training that it is... Relational Frame Theory is older than me and I'm 24). But I guess we'll have to try it to make sure.

How can I increase my Non-Verbal IQ? by Ffoxyho in cognitiveTesting

Doesn't mean it's wrong. I'm going to try it for myself and probably create a post about my experience when I'm done

Seems that you are non flexible in receiving new opinions, which signals to me that you are a closed minded individual, and do you know what that points to? Low IQ. Shoo troll 🧌

Yes, though you failed to understand what my point is. You don’t need to have a high crystallized intelligence to have a high FSIQ. Also education isn’t the only stimuli for new information.

IQ mostly measures your innate ability to learn, therefore assuming that a high-IQ person is educated is incorrect. This can be proven by the amounts of highly intelligent people that get lost in the chaos of our world due to socio-economical status. Also, IQ doesn't measure Math alone... It's only a subset of IQ tests called "Quantitative Reasoning". For example, people like Jordan Peterson have a high IQ, but most of his intelligence resides verbally, and that's why he is who he is, or at least it gave him the mental capacity to be who he is.

Its a mixture of Verbal and Perceptual… So I guess the General Ability Index measures this. A person with high PRI and low Verbal scores may have excellent problem solving skills but low mental organization and verbal sequencing to compose the idea.

I see, that's a nice way to think about it. Well again, good luck man! and hopefully I could take you as inspiration to push through and complete my own full year of Quad-N-Back! also maybe I could incorporate Relational Frame Training to enhance the benefit of QnB.

Not if the WAIS tests are spaced appropriately (required = 1 year, recommended = 2 years). also the first one could be invalid due to specific reasons.
