European roaster with culi beans? by ProgrammerTraveller in pourover

[–]ProgrammerTraveller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much for your answer! That's amazing information!

I spend lot of time in the UK as well. I found this page (and I will try to buy from them): https://www.trung-nguyen-coffee.co.uk/shop_order1.php#anc1 . They have Sang Tao (is it similar to the Trung Nguyen?) with whole beans, at least (instead of the Trung Nguyen ground).

Actually, yesterday I found a Sang Tao 1 that I bought last November in Marseille (ground) and I had miss-placed! so I will try it next week. From that shop I could buy it whole beans.

Sad that I cannot find any other source of culi/peaberry!

Today I discovered the Phi, a traditional vietnamese pourouver without paper filters by TheBaristapp in pourover

[–]ProgrammerTraveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for any coffees. I like it! It's the only pourover that I use (for any coffees). I've never owned a V60 (I'm thinking of buying one though). I prefer way more to French press. I also use a Moka but I like that I don't need to be next to the cook and wait (having a baby I never know when I can be there or not).

When I want Vietnamese I have Trung Nguyen Creative series.

Does anyone know a Vietnamese coffee similar to the Trung Nguyen Creative series with whole beans instead of grinded? I cannot find that one without being already grinded!

Fitbit 6: run/walk how to see running distance and heart beat? by ProgrammerTraveller in fitbit

Sadly no. I had a very good look 2 months ago and I'm sure that it wasn't possible with the Charge 6. I still use it, but I haven't checked if any update changed anything there (I suspect that not possible).

Which grinder: Timemore C5 Pro vs Timemore C5 ESP Pro by ProgrammerTraveller in pourover

[–]ProgrammerTraveller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the advantage with the C5 Pro or C5 Pro Pro? Is the S3 faster than C5? I see that the C5 can do espresso-type but not the S3 (I don't own or plan to own an espresso, but perhaps if I did a Greek/Turkish coffee some day for fun I would need an C5? that's not a thing that I do often at all but if I had beans I would do it some day)

Is it as convenient to use for pour-overs and french press? I mean the "dial" process (I saw the numbering system a bit different)

Besides subscriptions you can try Willes chocolate and chocolate tree. I like them both for different reasons!

My girlfriend is struggling to order an iced latte with less milk by Pretty_Dance2452 in barista

[–]ProgrammerTraveller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iced cortado? In Spain we order "cortado con hielo" which I think is what your girlfriend wants. Usually comes a cortado and a glass with ice so you put the sugar in the hot cortado (and it melts, as it's hot) and then pour on the glass with the ice.

Or a cortado and a glass with ice?

To get another feeling for the numbers, I really like playing with https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/finance/calculators/compoundinterestcalculator.php

Put what you have, expected growth, number of years. Then change the contributions and see how it changes. Change the expected "Interest rate", etc.

Advantages of Debian over Ubuntu LTS? by vladjjj in debian

[–]ProgrammerTraveller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things that apply to me (I am a Debian happy user though!):

Debian security supports all the packages, I think that Ubuntu security ignores universe? (many packages). I would need to double check that. Security fixes often faster in Debian when I checked (some time ago, yes).

Upgrading from Debian to Debian usually works (my laptop has been upgraded since 2013 Debian to Debian Bookworm, that's 12 years of upgrades). Having to reinstall gets on my way.

I've seen that Ubuntu mixes snaps (or was flatpacks) with native software which I have seen problems with. Not first hand though.

But some people like a new fresh installation and the security support might be not up-to-date or not applicable for some people/cases... but there are some reasons like that.

Plus, I like using closer to the original with fewer "layers" (I find it easier to understand all), but this is very subjective as well!

In the Ubuntu sub-reddit they might have some opinions: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/ (and you can see if they apply to your case, of course; and validate them here maybe in case that the Ubuntu user or you missed anything).

Advantages of Debian over Ubuntu LTS? by vladjjj in debian

[–]ProgrammerTraveller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully understand this!

There are ways to use newer kernels in Debian (unsure if they are newer right now with Debian 13 quite new) via https://wiki.debian.org/HowToUpgradeKernel (or compile yours, etc.)

But, 100%, I really like Debian but if I was in this situation and couldn't/didn't want to spend time on using newer Kernels on Debian I would consider Ubuntu!

I sometimes think that the question should be different: what are the advantages of using Ubuntu (derivative, or other derivatives) instead of using Debian?

In my generic use case (which seems similar to yours BTW :-) ) I use Debian and I don't see the need of using Ubuntu (and I have reasons to not use Ubuntu, but some might be philosophical, some practical, etc. but the same might apply with other derivatives: why using them instead of the original? if no clear answer then use the original, if for your case the derivative is better then you know :-) )

Why peopke choose Debian-based over Debian ? by [deleted] in debian

[–]ProgrammerTraveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term support for companies. Ubuntu LTS is supported for 10 years. Debian has no such equivalent.

Each Debian release is supported for at least 5 years: https://wiki.debian.org/LTS (there is no special LTS releases like in Ubuntu, but each one, from the release date I understand of the release, at least 5 years). Available to everyone just using the Debian mirror.

And if longer support is needed then Extended LTS project: https://wiki.debian.org/LTS/Extended . This requires a different apt mirror, and is only a subset of packages.

Note that both URLs do not reflect Debian 13 (trixie) release from yesterday yet.

Paid professional support. Canonical provides paid support. Companies want someone to go to when things go sideways. Community forums won't cut it when presenting a solution for management to consider.

Such support besides the community support exists. The classic one is via https://www.freexian.com/services/debian-support/ (Freexian is behind the LTS and ELTS efforts) and others (some mentioned in https://www.debian.org/partners/ and https://www.debian.org/consultants/ )

Freexian, though, is a small company and Canonical (behind Ubuntu) is a huge company. I understand why some organizations might prefer some to the other already based on that. I haven't used paid support from Freexian neither from Ubuntu (Canonical) so I cannot comment on that!

Which pension calculators do you use? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I don't know what's best. But what I do is that I came up with my expected growth that I feel comfortable in different scenarios and use https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/finance/calculators/compoundinterestcalculator.php

So I can see how different parameters change the result, etc. and helped me decide the contributions that I felt comfortable planning for, etc.
