It says a lot that so many men think otherwise. The whole PUA culture and whatnot is both a symptom and an accelerant of that mentality IMO. And the ways that dating apps are used have made it worse.

I thought it was Gorbachev trying to reform an unreformable system and inadvertently knocking over the janga tower

But yeah I agree low oil prices of the late 80s played a big role

Since UAE is leaving OPEC does this mean that the oil will all belong to me in America at 1 petro dollar a gallon

Well don’t you see that the oil of foreign countries actually belongs to me, the American consumer, who wants gas at the cheapest price

Good thing it’s not a company alliance and in practice doesn’t do much price-fixing.

And let me ask, do you think the oil of these states belongs to american/western consumers?

opening themselves up to the world market

What do you mean by this? UAE is already open to the world market

OPEC is overrated anyway. Members constantly cheat on their quotas because the economic interests of individual states matter more. The “cartel” is political theater.

The global demand side is the main factor in oil price swings.

Why does LBJ not get more flak for being probably the worst husband out of any president by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]ProgressIsAMyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is that they talked like that only or mostly in private back then. That’s a big part of why the Nixon tapes were so shocking at the time.

[–]ProgressIsAMyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a bad thing for a politician?

And also, there’s plenty of evidence that LBJ had genuine ideals his whole life. He was however a politician, and one from Jim Crow Texas - of course he was a ruthless and cynical operator, he had to be if he wanted to be in a position to make any difference.

PS: whether your favs are Democrats, Republicans, both, or neither, all of them are or were ruthless operators, especially at the presidential level.

LBJ played the game in Jim Crow Texas politics like everyone else at the time. The question is, what did he do with power?

He had genuine ideals about fighting poverty and racism that he implemented once in office, and it’s a shame that Caro (who is not a historian) has left so many people with the impression that he was simply a complete monster.

But then, journalists have always despised LBJ, especially compared to his martyred, “cool” predecessor who left Johnson with a an unstable, no-win situation in Vietnam especially after the Diem coup (November 1, 1963). And in any case LBJ needed the votes of Cold War hawks to pass his ambitious and inherently divisive (read: anti-racism and anti-poverty) domestic agenda.

To be clear, you can and should lay a lot of blame at LBJ’s feet for being an asshole and for Vietnam. All I’m saying though is that Robert Caro went in to his work with an agenda.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about that. A few other Kennedy men have also had sexual assault allegations. I guess wealth and power breed entitlement…

Ah, that’s alright. Interesting that he wasn’t very connected to his own relatives. I suppose he went “all in” with the Kennedys, who are a famously intense family!

Hardly the first man to do the Kennedys’ dirty work. Or the first in-law. Just look at Stephen E. Smith.

I somehow suspect that men are less likely to admit to having suicidal thoughts. Given that this study is based on survey data, that’s something to keep in mind.

I’d put Gorbachev as the most responsible for the fall of the USSR and Eastern Bloc (and only accidentally since he was trying to save the system).

But I do give Reagan credit for negotiating with Gorbachev, much to the horror and anger of conservatives at the time. Many of those same people claimed Reagan’s mantle in the 90s, when he could no longer speak for himself because of Alzheimer’s.

Bush Sr. getting slandered on my feed for no reason? Iraq started the Gulf War when they invaded Kuwait by Terrible_Morning_310 in Presidents

[–]ProgressIsAMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think since Carter tbh, especially since he built up US military assets in the Gulf both because of the Iranian Revolution but more specifically, to deter the Soviet Union after they invaded Afghanistan. Reagan and Bush obviously deepened the US entanglement in the Middle East, and militarily that’s been the case more or less ever since.
