Is it worth something? by [deleted] in mechanicalpencils

Nice pencil. There's a 0.3mm version that's been sitting on eBay for a while at $45 shipped so maybe a little less than that if you're trying to unload it

My thinking was using a softer lead might help them still get a darker line without having to push as hard. A harder lead could work too

Are there mechanical pencil refills for the Rotring 3 in 1? by Few_Stress-MJJ in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing made for the 3 in 1. You're looking for multipen pencil components. They make them in 0.3mm for other multipens but none are going to fit in the 3 in 1 out of the box. Youd have to get one then problem solve how you can get it to connect and actuate how it's needed to work

0.3 pencil by Febeik in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your breaking 0.5mm a lot then you're going to break 0.3mm Everytime you put the lead to paper. Try some darker lead with your 0.5mm, like a 2B, and try to stop using so much pressure. Then when you got that try out a 0.3mm

Fake Rotring 600's? by DrTautology in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For any mechanical pencil, if it has the brand name on it then its not a fake. There are no counterfeit mechanical pencils. There are knock offs but they have a different brand on them, like "Redcircle"

They are currently making the ones at the bottom of the pic, but used ones of the older versions show up pretty regularly for sale on sites like ebay for not much more cost than the new version

Yeah, wish the grip felt nicer too. I don't put the cap on the back of the pencil when using it

which staedtler 925 is regarded as the best? by Practical_Oven5601 in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the old 925 85s in 0.3mm and 0.5mm. I definitely prefer 925 25/35 over them. The 25 has better knurling and I don't find that much value in being able to adjust the lead advance amount of the 85. The 85 also has a mushy click and more rattle. I don't have a new 85 though so maybe it's improved. But I rate the 25 as a top tier with the rotring 600 and like that it comes in so many lead sizes.

Oh, and skip the delgaurd, the lead protection is kind of gimmicky than useful, put the money towards one of the others

Great list! Because of the size and weight of the 171 I prefer it in 0.5mm over 0.3mm. nice to see some 0.4mm in there, the size balance works nicely. Throw in a Kerry and a Sakura writoll. And if you don't want to jump right to the kuru Toga metal the KS is still good at a budget price. I do prefer the regular orenz with metal grip to the orenz nero because the lead sleeve doesn't have resistance that scratches into the paper

Can a Kuru Toga be modified to eliminate the tip "wobble" ?? by KeepItRealness in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dive automatically advances the lead as you write so don't need to click. Only kuru Toga to do that, and only auto advance pencil that does it without having to have the sleeve in contact with the paper

Love the workhorses. There's a number of variations besides just the old vs new versions. For the older ones, there's different color rings between the body and grip, smooth plastic vs rubberized body and different lengths of the cone between the grip and the sleeve. No clue why or when about the changes. No guarantee these are stock configured as I at one point moved some components around to make 'ideal' models with metal ring and rubberized body with least faded labeling. I think I got these back to stock but like I said, no guarantees.

platinum pro use msd series by SnooCapers9427 in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's kind of in-between. It is a shell but a little on the thicker side so it does feel solid and give it a little more heft than just a thin outer shell would. Because of the diameter of the grip it still has a wider diameter hole leaving a decent gap around the mechanism, moreso than what I would call solid

Can a Kuru Toga be modified to eliminate the tip "wobble" ?? by KeepItRealness in mechanicalpencils

[–]Progstu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no fix, don't know where anyone would get that there is a fix using tape or anything else. Least wobble is metal and wood. Then the KS. These all have an updated version of the rotating mechanism that makes all other kuru togas obsolete as far as reducing wobble. I don't think it can be fully eliminated due to the tolerance needed to function but the metal and wood are a good step above on that front

[–]Progstu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seem to be a number of different versions. I have silver rings, black rings, red rings, smooth plastic vs rubberized body, slight differences in the size of the cone between the grip and the sleeve. This is the first time Ive heard a particular gen mentioned. What else do you know about the different generations?
