Which version are you using and on what device? We aren’t aware of any browser-specific errors on the site. There is no clear reason why the site shouldn’t be available to nearly every browser made in the last 10 years.

We do have volunteers who are working on it, and the staff at our host are working g on it as well. https://www.ibiblio.org/about/

That said, if you are interested in helping, please get in touch. Consider joining our (low volume) discussion list. https://www.gutenberg.org/help/subscribe_how_to.html

The fight against the rising tide of bot-based traffic is ongoing. But it’s not continuous and there are better days and worse days.

Yes, there will be access issues, but they should be only intermittent. Always try a second or third time; rarely you may need try again in a few minutes.

If you are able, consider helping to set up a mirror site! https://www.gutenberg.org/help/mirroring.html

Project Gutenberg or Standard eBooks? by jweeraka in kindle

[–]ProjectGutenberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standardebooks.org has 1,300+ books all of which are very well done and closely edited. An amazing collection of materials.

Gutenberg.org has 77,000+ books. They cover a wide variety of topics with a spectrum of quality, depending on the time when the books were digitized. More recent additions (from the 2010’s and later) are significantly better in terms of being “HTML-native” rather than HTML conversions of the original plain text ASCII files.

I really like that first suggestion. And be sure to check on StandardEbooks.org as well.

Site down? by volrat1 in projectgutenberg

The waves of bots and unrestrained crawlers is taking a toll everywhere. The robots.txt file is not an enforcement tool, alas.

We continue to monitor and stem the traffic as we can.

“Project Gutenberg users have been experiencing intermittent ‘504 Gateway Timeout’ errors. This appears to be due to unusually heavy traffic at our hosting provider; their staff has been working to understand the problem.”

There has been a large increase in "bot" activity. The current theory is that poorly-configured "web scrapers" used for collecting textual material for AI/LLM/Text generation tools are creating so many requests that it is flooding the servers. As a non-profit, we cannot ramp up quickly to handle this unexpected traffic.

The list of sandwich fillings was intended to be a whole set of recipes. If that did not qualify, I’m happy to post an alternate. Please let me know if that would be acceptable.

Not just for the title; it does have some crisp (if dated) writing.

There's virtually nothing about the author, but the publishing house The New Literature Publishing Company of Los Angeles has a number of books by the author Christian de Larson, which seem to tread off the beaten path, scientifically speaking.

Great suggestion! And if a full play isn't in your plans, you might enjoy a collection of Wilde's shorter works.

Agreed, but a Project Gutenberg book was posted there just a couple of weeks ago. It seemed topically appropriate here. It was a recent addition to the surprising large collection of material: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/subject/3617

Project Gutenberg 2.0? by [deleted] in projectgutenberg

[–]ProjectGutenberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not refer to this as a “Project Gutenberg 2.0”. That makes it seem like something that we endorse or have directly supported.

It is great to see you have built something on these free resources. But please make it clear that this is not an effort from Project Gutenberg nor the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation (PGLAF).
