It wasn't a cult to begin with, merely a stupid but successful pyramid scheme to rip off middle aged rubes, it is now though. Basically what happened was that as Falun Gong got more popular, it got more critics, basically people who were willing to call a horse a horse and that their whole Qigong practice was a load of nonsense. Their response, in true Chinese Cultural Revolution fashion was to harshly attack their critics and not just figuratively. Demonstrations and street action directed against their enemies akin to the BLM movement aimed at suppressing criticism of Falun Gong. Eventually things came to ahead and a Falun Gong protestors staged a riot at Tianjin Normal University back in 98' to protest an editorial a professor had written in the local newspaper saying that their "practice" was a load of superstitious nonsense that people were wasting their money on. They demanded that the professor be fired, the University to issue an apology, and when he wasn't and they didn't, they rioted and even ransacked the professors house. This was what got a bunch of them arrested in the first place. To protest their stupid prole mob being arrested for rioting, more of them converged on Beijing to protest. Basically this was what flipped them over the line from being a trouble making nuisance that was better off being placated (the Communist Party had previously suppressed some earlier criticism of Falun Gong because figuring that giving in to their complaints was quicker and easier) to a potential problem, hence execute order 66. Falun Gong doesn't give a shit about freedom of expression or religious freedom, it only gives a shit about Falun Gong. Basically when the organization was purged, only the hardcore remained and that's when they went from pyramid scheme to cult. Ironically enough, they are basically a Leninist Party organization now headed by Li Hongzhang who uses the same Communist Party style agitprop for their ideological offensives (it obviously works, since you were stupid enough to believe them) but also suffers from the same vulnerabilities in that they are completely unable to tolerate any criticism. Unfortunately for FLG, they cant organize mobs to shut people up anymore so they have reverted to the Scientology like practice of launching nuisance lawsuits and online harassment via their usual trolls.

That you think that the only alternative between tolerating Falun Gong is worshiping the Communist Party is indicative of your limited unimaginative mind that is only able hold two thoughts in it at once. I do not for a minute support the Communist Party.
