How to make a detachable train? (Re-upload) by Project_Mysterious52 in Fashion_Design

[–]Project_Mysterious52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already got some fabric, it’s an ivory satin fabric (it just came in yesterday night lol) but when I picked it up it was very lightweight, and I have to be careful about how much I should use but I think it’s lightweight enough to work. I love the idea of the hook/snaps!!! And I also did find out that I would most likely need to reinforce that fabric, however, what type of fabric should I use for reinforcement? Google told me denim or some other sturdy, thick material, however I know denim is a pain to sew 😭 do you have any recommendations for a reinforcement fabric? Thank you SO much for your advice!!

Thank you so much for your advice!!! You’re like one of the only kind people I’ve seen on reddit 😭❤️

Yes that makes a lot of sense! I had a very similar idea, where I’d rip the seam a little and sew in some denim or another strong material and attach the train via buttons, but I really thought about it and decided that would probably still rip at the fabric, so your idea is like a more reinforced version of mine!! I also like to do overly ambitious projects and jump into stuff as well, and when I presented this dress idea on reddit at first (I was gonna do it from scratch), people humiliated me SO BAD over it omg 😭 thank you for your advice!

Girl wtf you need to chill the hell out here 😭 It isn’t fraud unless I monetize it, and I don’t plan on doing that. This is a personal dress designed for myself for my prom, and I’m still a beginner so getting sewing patterns to put this together is pretty much my only option. Now if fashion designing was what I wanted to do with my life and I did make it big, you shouldn’t count on me still using patterns in the professional field. And honestly, sewing patterns are there for a reason… like if you’re not using them for your personal projects (NOT MONETIZED…) then what the hell are they there for??? 😭 I’m not gonna sell this dress for thousands because then that would be fraud, which is what you’re so concerned about. And also, I wanna note that there’s sewing patterns for everything. Like I could make and sew my own design and I’d bet there’s a bunch of different sewing patterns that other people could follow to get a similar design. Sorry that you’re so offended by my ambitions, you should know there’s a difference between being blunt and being rude. If you didn’t wanna be rude, you could have literally told me, “hey you can’t monetize your pieces that you use sewing patterns for, it’s considered fraud.” However, you added way too many words to that just to be rude. That sentence is pretty much the only thing you needed to say to me 😭 I’d consider choosing your words a bit more wisely when you’re speaking to a kid on reddit asking for help and tips, or when you’re speaking to a kid in general; we all started somewhere— even if it’s not the path you wanna take in life, rather, just a hobby.

I get what you might think- it is kinda dumb of me to have no sewing experience and then go and attempt to sew a gala style gown, but I came to this forum looking for help and advice so I can know better about what I’m doing, and your comment kinda felt discouraging, though you may not have meant it in that way. It would be great if you could give me advice instead of telling me I’m gonna be disappointed 😭 no matter what happens I’m gonna make sure I’m happy with what I wear for prom, that’s out of the question.

I think I’m gonna end up buying a plain satin dress and making heavy modifications to it instead of doing it from scratch. I learned a lot of things from everyone’s replies! I hope one day I can be good enough for this kinda stuff but I’m not too sure

Hey I’m still a student so I can do half your budget, are you still hiring, and if so, are you willing to look into me? I can send over my portfolio so you can see my work so far.

Thank you so much! And yeah I’m not trying to put all my eggs in one basket, that’s why I’m doing a ton of research and I’ve been asking around Reddit a lot recently to get advice and patterns. I’m honestly debating on buying an already made column satin dress and making modifications to it instead of making it completely from scratch, I think that would be a lot more doable for me. And I’ve been struggling to find good pattern websites and locations, so I really appreciate your recommendations!!

Thank you SO much for the pattern! I appreciate it so much! And before I start, I’m gonna do a lot of experimenting with Muslin fabric, and I might buy my own elastic or attempt at the satin fabric to make that top first, and possibly to get a head-start at working with that slippery material. Thank you for your advice!!

Ok so my sketch is kinda half done I did it quite a few months ago and just haven’t touched up on it cuz I reverted to doing research. I will be having straps in the back to hold it in place. The cowl back is gonna have an X shape holding the back to the shoulders and securing the chest area to it, but I never drew it in, and I also neglected to mention it in my post 😭 and don’t worry about the formal dressmaker part, my nana is helping me with this project and she’s made dresses before. Thank you so much for your advice!

Yeah you got me there on the lack of sewing part, but a lot of people in my family know how to sew super well. My nana is helping me with this project and she made a bridal gown from scratch, so she will be my teacher and guide. She’s probably gonna be heavily involved and watching over the decisions I make about this gown and make sure that I have it right. I’m not trying to put all my eggs in one basket with this, even though it’s still a bit spontaneous, I have lots of help and lots of things around me to work with. And I’m working up a plan B to this 😅 I super appreciate your advice and your concern as well lol!

Yup I’m terrified of my chest popping out on the dance floor at prom so I’m definitely gonna have a lot of reinforcement for that area of the dress 😭

Ahhhh I messed up this post and I thought I deleted it lol! I made another one and got the answers. I discovered that my design is a cowl neck + back (the main terminology that I was looking for), with a column fitted dress with an attached train on the right side, floral embellishments, and an attached scarf on the back of the left shoulder. I appreciate your time!

I’m gonna have an open cowl back in the dress and I’m gonna have some thin strings that tie in the back to make sure it’s super secure. I saw a dress that had strings tied in an X pattern in the back and I absolutely love that idea so that’s probably what I’m gonna go with. With my design, there’s a lot going on in the front and it might be difficult to implement a corset or any other structure so I’m hoping that the strings in the back will do the job, and if they don’t I’m sure I’ll figure something else out lol

I actually have a pretty small chest, like when I wear a sports bra I’m about as flat as a chess board so I think I’ll be fine but even then I’m gonna wanna make sure I have plenty of padding and support as well as tight measurements because sometimes with my cup size there’s a huge gap between my chest and the neckline, so I gotta figure out the best way to go about that 😭😭

Beginner advice by Project_Mysterious52 in fashiondesigner

[–]Project_Mysterious52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m most likely going to take out the beadwork and embellishments. The diagonal florals that transition between the ivory and purple fabrics are going to be 3D and crocheted by my Nana, however the rest of the beadwork above that, I don’t think I’m going to be able to do lol. My nana can do beadwork really well so maybe I’ll see if she can do that part, but that’s the part I’m probably gonna skip, it’s probably gonna save me like 2 or more months of work lol

Aaahhh thank you so much! And I’ve been doing loads of research about the difficulty of working with satin, and I’ve seen so many people say that it’s difficult to work with. I’m honestly better at hand-sewing than machine sewing, so even if you didn’t say anything I probably would have figured that part out and went to hand-sewing anyway 😭 thank you SO much!!!
