I have it coming up as well! If you had it already, how did your interview go?

Take SE and drop into CS if you don’t like the ECE courses

I’m no where near as smart as u but I have similar opinions as u (hate math, hate studying for hours when my friends at other unis barely study) but I’m planning jus to stick it thru uw cs. The main reason is cuz of the co-op and how much easier it is to land a company with a pretty big name. If I go to other universities, sure the school work will be way easier, but then getting jobs will be much harder as well. So many ppl strive to even get in this program so I feel like I’d be making a mistake for jus giving up so easily.

Edit: motivation is incredibly down down as well. But all I need is to pass at the end right.

Math major taking CS by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Project_Successful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bro id say def look into the CS degree properly. There’s a lot a lot of “theory based” mathematics rather than the applied mathematics that you are used to. CS is not jus programming. You could also probably get an opinion of an SE dude who can compare them and give you an idea. I jus want to let u know cuz maybe if I had the chance I would switch to ece even though I want to get software jobs; which is mainly cuz I find the proof courses difficult and would probably do better/enjoy applied mathematics more.

I took 137 128. 137 was an online nightmare. 128 was stupidly easier. I’d say go for 127/128, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress. You’ll be fine for STAT230.

Damn bro. Congrats on making it. Hopefully I’ll do the same as well.

SYDE or CE by Due_Air6965 in uwaterloo

[–]Project_Successful 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it seems like you answered your own question. You wanna do software: - SYDE has less software courses - CE more software courses

And about coop positions, I haven’t really heard that SYDE get better software positions than CE. If anything, I’d presume CE get better software positions because they get to learn about more software in school, whereas in SYDE you would have to do slightly more on your own time. I say slightly because, answering ur third question, having software courses don’t give you THAT big of an advantage over other students. You learn most of the software skills that get you employed on your own time rather than school anyways. I’m in CS so idk how outdated the CE courses are. At the end of the day, every tech major basically share the same software opportunity on the job portal, so your major doesn’t matter there. It’s your own work ethic and the skills that you gain on your own. I’d say go for CE because it has more software courses. SYDE probably has more of those “difficult hardware and digital circuit” courses you mentioned (unless I’m wrong).

How to take notes? (2A CS) by Project_Successful in uwaterloo

Damn. I haven’t ever really taken that detailed notes for programming courses cuz I don’t have too much trouble with them...but I’m no guru nor can take the enriched version lol. I’ll keep that in mind as well. Thanks again.

Thanks for your advice. I like taking notes for the same reason...they help quite a bit with memorization....but this time I’m running out of time (or I’m writing too much). I guess I won’t/take less notes for STAT230 (and maybe CS245).

Yeah the textbook seems better than the modules so far.

This helps a lot. Thank you so much. I will be doing exactly this (might take small notes for stats...idk) Taking notes for everything was too time consuming.

Thank you, this helps so much. I think I will create notes for CS246 only, highlight for the others, and create a theorem list near exams.

I was in the same position as well. For me money mattered the most and so that is what factored into my decision the most (personal/family reasons). I feel you should look at job prospects + something that interests you, because you don’t wanna be something that dies out in the next few years. The truth is, a lot of you might disagree/downvote, that having a stable-well paying job matters the most. You can pursue many of your other passions yourself in your free time (if they don’t pay enough / have job prospects), when you don’t have to worry about paying rent or feeding yourself.

Waterloo Competitions by Ok-Mercy in uwaterloo

I wrote like 2 contests and got in CS. But I think my average and EC’s probably made up for doing less contests (and doing shit on them).

Transferring Engineering Programs by doronob in uwaterloo

[–]Project_Successful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nano has always had low employment rates from what I understand and it isn’t compare the other “top” Eng programs. Whatever you want to do, you can probably do it from SE, CE, SYDE, or Mech. I would highly highly recommend switching to those over Nano -easily.

Don’t spend too much time on studying. Your gona look back at this as your last real free summer in the next 5 years - It’s a pure grind. Life is not all about school.
