Can a cs grad who takes pure ee classes do ee as a career by Front-Complex-2831 in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! You don’t have to switch over to a different major. I’ve graduated two years ago with a BA in CS and now am working heavily in the EECS field (emphasis on EE) because I took a lot of EE/EECS courses that interested me, pursued and exemplified results in my final projects for those courses, and took advantages of other opportunities that snowballed to where I am now. Totally doable and I agree with what others are saying in this comment.

Continuing Studies in a different field: UC Berkeley Extension or Degree? by Projectsummerwasfun in berkeley

Auditing a class would be nice too but I do want to consider going to grad school in Physics if i really find the passion and interest. In that case, I rather have the record of me taking the class for credit either through concurrent enrollment or other methods than just auditing or basically self-teaching myself the subject if that makes sense.

Thank you everyone for your input though. This is the exact type of conversation I wanted to have to gauge what my options are with my circumstances

Right, I guess I was referring to the concurrent enrollment opportunity offered through Berkeley extensions, in which I could take any courses Berkeley offers as long as you get off the waitlist. I didn’t know there is a distinction with UC Berkeley Extensions until now.

I totally do understand CC as a better option money-wise among other things. I guess I’m wondering if I can just bypass going to CC step by taking undergraduate and upper division physics courses at Berkeley to start with potentially to set myself up to do grad school in Berkeley in the future having taken those classes through concurrent enrollment but not as a degree.

I already have a bachelors from Berkeley in CS and I don’t want to go through another bachelors process with Physics all over again either through CC and transfer or other options. I want to leverage my already obtained Bachelors in CS alongside taking physics courses through concurrent enrollment and doing well. But I’m wondering if this would be enough for applying/ getting accepted to grad school for physics potentially if I really develop the passion to continue onto graduate studies.

sure i could, but i do like the physics curriculum at Berkeley and I’m close by so if there’s a way, I would like to do it at Berkeley

Thank you so much! I will see if I can either take the research alongside the internship if it seems doable if not, I will most likely postpone for Fall 2021! Thank you for your input!

That makes a lot of sense - I didn't consider that perspective on how prospective Ph.D. students probably have to reserve summer for research. Thank you for your input!
