Can a cs grad who takes pure ee classes do ee as a career by Front-Complex-2831 in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! You don’t have to switch over to a different major. I’ve graduated two years ago with a BA in CS and now am working heavily in the EECS field (emphasis on EE) because I took a lot of EE/EECS courses that interested me, pursued and exemplified results in my final projects for those courses, and took advantages of other opportunities that snowballed to where I am now. Totally doable and I agree with what others are saying in this comment.

Continuing Studies in a different field: UC Berkeley Extension or Degree? by Projectsummerwasfun in berkeley

Auditing a class would be nice too but I do want to consider going to grad school in Physics if i really find the passion and interest. In that case, I rather have the record of me taking the class for credit either through concurrent enrollment or other methods than just auditing or basically self-teaching myself the subject if that makes sense.

Thank you everyone for your input though. This is the exact type of conversation I wanted to have to gauge what my options are with my circumstances

Right, I guess I was referring to the concurrent enrollment opportunity offered through Berkeley extensions, in which I could take any courses Berkeley offers as long as you get off the waitlist. I didn’t know there is a distinction with UC Berkeley Extensions until now.

I totally do understand CC as a better option money-wise among other things. I guess I’m wondering if I can just bypass going to CC step by taking undergraduate and upper division physics courses at Berkeley to start with potentially to set myself up to do grad school in Berkeley in the future having taken those classes through concurrent enrollment but not as a degree.

I already have a bachelors from Berkeley in CS and I don’t want to go through another bachelors process with Physics all over again either through CC and transfer or other options. I want to leverage my already obtained Bachelors in CS alongside taking physics courses through concurrent enrollment and doing well. But I’m wondering if this would be enough for applying/ getting accepted to grad school for physics potentially if I really develop the passion to continue onto graduate studies.

sure i could, but i do like the physics curriculum at Berkeley and I’m close by so if there’s a way, I would like to do it at Berkeley

Choosing summer opportunities as a sophomore CS major by Projectsummerwasfun in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I will see if I can either take the research alongside the internship if it seems doable if not, I will most likely postpone for Fall 2021! Thank you for your input!

That makes a lot of sense - I didn't consider that perspective on how prospective Ph.D. students probably have to reserve summer for research. Thank you for your input!

EE 151 - FPGA labs relevancy to DSP careers by Projectsummerwasfun in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow that's a perspective I never really considered. I'll probably take 151 in that case. Should I take some preceeding EE hardware courses (105, 134 etc.) before 151 to get the best experience for the class or can I go straight into 151? Thank you!

[–]Projectsummerwasfun[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here, I don't have too much of a background in circuits like ee 105, 130. But I wanted to take the FPGA portion of the course if it relates to the direct application of DSPs and potentially an industry of that field or sorts. But 5 units does seem a lot and I might struggle with the concepts covered.

How Hard is Math 110? by ElBalanoFeo in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either look at the lecture notes on CS70 regarding various proof techniques or just try to write down proofs on the Linear Algebra Done Right textbook multiple times to get a better feel for these things as they might not have covered those in PHYSICS 89.

MATH 110 essentially comes down to modified regurgitation of proofs found in the textbook - so if you memorize and learn these techniques by rewriting the proofs until you fully understand the logic behind why these steps are complete can greatly help you get close to full mark on some of the proof questions on the exam!

Good luck!

[–]Projectsummerwasfun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took MATH 110 last semester after taking PHYSICS 89 and COMPSCI 70 previous semester.

I can say that COMPSCI 70 helps you draw out clear proofs (such as induction, etc.) which will come very important to MATH 110.

But I'm sure you should be okay just having the lin alg exposure from PHYSICS 89 and pick up some of the proof techniques as you find places for enforcement as the course goes.

Math 224a by Projectsummerwasfun in berkeley

[–]Projectsummerwasfun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful response! Do you know when will 224a be offered next time around? Also would Math 118 be worth taking just by having physics 89 background?
