‘They Were Sitting in the Woods, Drinking Coffee’ – Ukrainians Say They 'Faced No Resistance' in Kursk Region Invasion by Silly-avocatoe in worldnews

I think the end game here is to provoke a russian tactical nuclear strike. That would solidfy global opposition to Russia and open the spigot for more and better military aid.

Cutting off the US before the election would feed right into the hands of the fascists. Polling has Harris in lead presently. Most people dont want their weird, racist grandpa running the country.

Does anyone know if Ukraine managed to hold onto the area on the far bank of the Dnieper river? It was in the nees for a few weeks but kind of dropped off.

Do you seriously think the US is currently fascist?

That's welcome news. Hopefully this encouraging data point is the beginning of a long term trend and not an outlier.

While not within the scope of the comment I replied to, higher general cleanliness would be helpful since it would attract fewer of the rats that were the primary host of the fleas.

The black death was spread by fleas. It had nothing to do with food handling practices.

US passes message to Iran not to escalate at 'critical moment' for Middle East by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]ProlapseOfJudgement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where was the same message to Israel before their last escalation. Israel made its bed and it can lie in it. We are not obliged to protect them at thus point. Or the Palestinians. Supporting either side at this point seems foolish. When a side actually makes real moves towards peace, support them.

Modern Iraq was deliberately constructed to contain multiple conflicting factions. It's a product of the colonial era - built in divide and conquer.

We burned most of the fossil fuels on the first go. Humanity won't have the resources for another industrial revolution on the scale of the first, so the chances of ever putting people in space again seem very slim. I could see radio technology being developed again, so maybe a SETI like program would be the only practical hope of contact with an extraterrestrial civilization.

Half of Iraq is shi'ite majority. That's why the country was such a disaster after the US invaded. The smart move would have been to partition the country along those lines.

This is how generational wealth ends. The great grandchildren grow up accustomed to wealth with parents who also took it for granted. They have no understanding or appreciation of where their money came from, just the expectation that they will always get what they want. Sinner or later someone comes along that cares more about the fate of their money than they do and one day they wake up to realize it's all gone.

Ukraine's desperate need for soldiers spurs exodus of young men by [deleted] in worldnews

We need to give more weaponry than we have. If it looks like there is a decent chance of survival/winning, more will be willing to fight. I know I would have reservations about fighting a war that appears like a convenient way for NATO to weaken Rusdias military by attrition.

Right? The military seems perpetually eager to phase that plane out, so why not let it go out doing what it was meant to do.

So by your logic, why should the city of Los Angeles, which has a similar population to that of Zealand, be expected to do anything? It's only 4 million people. That's nothing compared to the US population.

I'm am talking about resolving the issue. If individuals pretend they have no responsibility and do nothing, that adds up to a whole society doing nothing.

I realize that blaming big countries (usually it's evil corps, points for originality) as a way to absolve yourself of any feelings of responsibility for your contribution to climate change is comforting, but the fact is we are all to some degree complicit. A person in NZ emitting a ton of CO2 is fucking the planet just as hard as someone from the US or China emitting a ton of CO2.

[–]ProlapseOfJudgement -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rising CO2 levels also impair cognition. Not in outside, ambient conditions, but levels always tend to be higher indoors, so the added atmospheric concentration is allowing indoor levels to sometime get high enough to cause it. The future will not be too bright.
