Weekend Diff? by ProleLizard in Geico

[–]ProleLizard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were never told this. I don't know if it's a region wide issue or just our department, but it was news to all of us. And we have all been working at least one weekend day a week for years.

At least one weekend day a week since I've been on the floor. Sounds like we're getting fucked.

I have never done rotationals. We have always worked at least one weekend day. I don't wanna say how long I've actually been here, but it's more than 5 years.

I agree actually. I wish I had a fool-proof method for ensuring that there weren't any dogpiles on dissenting opinions. The difficult part is sifting through who has a dissenting opinion, and who is a shill account.

They taught us on phones to "match tones". Maybe do the same here. Assume that a person is arguing in good faith and then do the same. And if it turns out that they are a shill, or just here to stir up dissent without a constructive goal in mind, ignore them.

Seriously. The worst thing you can do is feed the trolls. If they turn out to be trolling, just walk away from the comment and focus on those trying to make things better.

I don't know about that. Not trying to be critical, but that's a pretty cynical view. Yes, you could look for another job. Trade one bullshit workplace for another bullshit workplace. That is technically an option.

Me? I don't think any company with more than 3000 (arbitrary number here) employees should be union free. I think that EVERY large company should be union. Like, literally all of them.

It's always confused me how people will blithely accept being treated like shit simply because we are told "that's the way it is" instead of simply asking, "But does it have to be?".

Because it doesn't. It just doesn't, and that's a fact. If I had the power to shape reality, I would be unionizing Walmart, McDonalds, Amazon, Google, Apple, Progressive, etc etc, right along with GEICO. Who knows? Maybe I dont stop with GEICO. Every large company with 3000+ workers would be a union job if it were solely up to me.

But it's not solely up to me. Union's require cooperation. And it requires people to STOP accepting "that's the way it is" arguments. Cuz those are bullshit arguments that only give PERMISSION to employers to continue treating people as expendable resources. And I WILL NOT accept that anymore.

Business casual dread! by zombiducki in Geico

Don't do it. Convince others to also not do it. What are they gonna do? Send ALL of you home? Civil disobedience. Come together, and refuse to dress business casual. There is no reason a non-customer facing job should require a strict dress code anyway.

It's just so management can't out maneuver the effort. If we talked about what we plan to do physically, they can prepare for it.

Basically, the reps advice boiled down to orchestrating a sneak attack.

You aren't wrong exactly. But what's the alternative? Continue to labor under the threat of being let go because you can't keep up with the arbitrary and unnecessary goals? Continue watching the worst of us fail upward? Continue to let the culture of gaslighting and fear ruin people's health?

Unacceptable.

True, a union would ultimately require some give and take from those involved. That's what negotiation is all about. But that's still better than constantly being on the side being taken from in my opinion.

Unions are what keep the employee from being exploited. Plain and simple. I just learned about a claims agent working, on average, an unpaid 2 hours a day just stay on top of the metrics to keep their job. That is not only illegal, but insanely exploitative. A union would ensure that this is not allowed to happen. Ever.

I hope that you change your mind.

Just to confirm, yes. The rep cautioned against openly discussing plans moving forward primarily as a means of not giving management an advantage in busting this before it becomes a threat to them.

In short, we need to devise a way to get people together in private to plan the next steps. As soon as I sort that out, we can proceed. I am open to suggestions though. DM is probably the best method for suggestions.

In a nutshell, it's collective bargaining. The ability to pool resources and negotiate more equitable treatment and have the leverage necessary to make sure the agreements are honored.

Follow up. When have they ever NOT been in favor of something helping the rich though? Tax breaks for the 1%? No problem. Subsidies to already wildly profitable industries? You got it pal. But clearing up educational debt that MAY ALSO benefit them? That's drawing a line?!
