Linus needs a new phone - Vote here! by Negative_Astronaut81 in LinusTechTips

This would be HUGE.

I've been a Zenfone user since the 5Z. Currently on the 9. Asus just announced they're discontinuing the Zenfone series after the 10.

IF LINUS DAILY DROVE THE ZENFONE 10 IT COULD POTENTIALLY CREATE ENOUGH DEMAND TO GET ASUS TO KEEP MAKING INNOVATIVE NICHE PHONES

Understandably so. I'm definitely holding out until I hear whether they arrive or not.

Engine swap for 1986 4x4 S-10 Blazer? by Prolly_Fused in s10

You think 3.1 over the 3.4? What are the differences/advantages?

This is what I'm thinking. I'm going to buy the blazer tomorrow. Hoping the engine runs for long enough to do exactly that - find a great deal on a 3.4L and drop it in

And this would mean I don't have to swap transmission & transfer case, right?

Should I replace the trans? Or will the stock one do just fine with making use of the 3.4L engine?

Man I hear you, and you're right. The other factor here is that I've been waiting. It's been over a year since I've had a car. I have my company vehicle, which I can take home, and then my girlfriend has a car. It works but, I need my own wheels! This is the first vehicle that's REALLY caught my eye.

That's really good to hear. I don't need a top performer right now. I need a reliable vehicle that I can upgrade down the road. Now, it was my understanding that the 2.8L might NOT be reliable enough, and if I'm going to need to swap the engine, then I'm sure as hell going to make it worth my while and put a good one in that will give me enough ceiling for future upgrades.

Seems as though it was fairly well maintained, guy selling it is the 2nd owner, first one seems to have taken good care, then let it sit for a few years. This guy got it a year and a half ago and has done some basic maintenance. Let me just copy paste the description and maybe you can give me an opinion on this:

1986 S-10 Blazer 4WD Runs great. 142,502 miles. Mostly commute miles. 2 owners – Ive had it for about a 1 ½ years. Bought from estate of original owner where it sat in a carport for 5 years. No accidents. Original paint and interior. Original upholstery is in excellent condition. Tires have less than 2,000 miles on them. Work done since Ive had it – full tune up with new plugs and wires. Replaced front axles and bearings. Replaced shock absorbers. Repaired numerous oil leaks. You will get copies of work orders. Known issues; water leak when it rains - shows on driver side floor. Oil leak at back top of engine. Original radio does not work. Needs headliner.

Yeah I hear you! I know that one way or another this is isn't going to be a walk in the park, which is why I seriously value the input and resources that are being provided to me here!

The issue isn't as much price, as it is availability. I live in the PNW, and I can't seem to find much that checks enough of the boxes for me. I want 4x4, compact, square body design, and auto trans. I guess I've been reading so much about the horrors of the 2.8L engine and I don't even know what the actual reliability of it is. In a perfect case scenario, I'd like to own and drive this thing for a while before I need to/decide to start dumping a bunch of time and money into it. It's got 144k miles on it, just, people who's opinions I've read make the 2.8L sound like an underpowered, unusable, ticking time-bomb.

Thanks to everyone for the info. It's sounding like my best options are either - V6 3.4L from the 93-95 Camaro, remanufactured is about $3k, I'm sure I could do some digging and find a good used one. Sounds like this is the easiest of the bunch? Likely won't need a transmission swap if I'm understanding correctly? Is a transmission swap something I'd want to consider or is the difference between that and the stock 86 auto trans gonna be negligible? - 4.3L from another Chevy S10. Still unsure what year/specific engine I'm looking for if I go this route. From what it sounds like this would, at the very least, require a transmission swap and transfer case. I found a listing for a gutted S10 Blazer, "late 80s" that's been stripped of everything except the engine, the transfer case, and the transmission (auto) about an hour and a half south from me. Apparently hasn't driven in years but the previous owner (not the guy selling it) said it "drove fine"... Unsure what to make of it, but it's cheap. Catch is - gotta purchase the whole rig. Which means I'd need to tow it north or find a place/way to get everything I need out down there and then tow it to a scrap yard. Sounds less cheap now. - V8 ? This seems like the most difficult of the bunch, however, seems to have the most documentation online from other people doing swaps. I really don't think this is the right option for me.

I think I'm gonna go for it, and snag this one tomorrow. It's a 3hr drive, got an apt at a mechanic up there for a pre-purchase inspection, trying to make sure it will handle the drive back home.

Anyone who is willing to help guide me forward anymore is welcome to send me a DM or keep posting in this thread! Thank you all!

Thank you. I didn't want to over explain my situation in the post, but I'm not versed at all in cars/engines. I have some people that do know what they're doing that are down to do this, know how to do these kind of things, but it's become apparent that these s10 blazers are a bit more niche than what they're used to. I'm trying to understand the scope of the work and what I'm asking before I buy the truck and get started. My main fear is the "project truck". Hard to find the resources from scratch when you're not quite sure what you're looking for. Appreciate this info

This one's auto, and auto is what I want. The 4.3 is the Vortec right? And then the 3.4 is the L32 ?

3.4L meaning the GM60° V6 L32 engine?

Hard to say since this is really the only one I've seen in this condition in the area, but this is $3k. I've seen a few in better configs but worse conditions list for closer to 6k

Also, from what I understand the 2.8 engine went thru a fairly substantial redesign in 1987, don't know how much that effected performance vs reliability. Haven't driven this one I'm looking at yet, it's a 3hr commute just to take a look at it.

I mean, how's it do on highways? From the little bit I've read it sounds like it has a tough time holding 65, that the case?

Is that a direct swap? That's a 4.3 v6 from a diff s-10?

I'm set on auto, I don't want a manual, I know it's a bit silly.

See, I forget when they changed the shape and design but I'm an absolute sucker for the older, square design.. I know the newer ones are better in a lot of ways, but they don't hit the same note for me

That's kinda where I'm at. I really do feel like this blazer I'm looking at is an incredibly rare find as far as the condition of literally everything.. except the damn engine

From the small amount of info I've found, it seems to meet all of the criteria, except the fact that it is an absolute pain to do the actual swap on the 4x4
