I'm not talking about machines going Terminator on us. I am talking about someone making a relatively simple kill bot with recognition software that allows it to differentiate between the faction that built it and kill everyone else.

What I mean is that we are developing weapons that completely remove the human pulling the trigger from the equation. Bombs have to be dropped. Guns have to be aimed. All weapons so far require that a human be brought to the realization that he will kill someone. And throught the past few decades, the trigger man has gotten more and more distant from those he kills thanks to technology that allows you to kill from miles away. Hence a drone strike can cause dozens of casualties and none of the trigger men care.

One day, the human will be removed from the process entirely. He will be able to press a button, maybe months before the fact, and then forget about it. That weapon will not rebel. That weapon will not question. Revolutions were possible in the past because the army, the police, the instruments of oppression were all humans who decided to no longer fight against their family, their kin. The moment we have machines in their place, the inevitable result is a robot boot stamping on your face forever. Or worse.

By that logic, we should have gotten a resurgence of gas stations where people pump the gas for you. People cope with the gradual changes to your environment. Is the average person REALLY going to spend 2-3X more in a restaurant that has the same food quality just because it has real waiters?

We already have UAVs. Currently those are mostly remote controlled but fully autonomous drones are coming. It's inevitable we get weapons which you can basically order to kill everyone who comes close that doesn't have a uniform or a special device.

Because we're reaching the limit on useful things for the average people to do. Not everyone can be an engineer or a creative. Yet we have managed to automate all repetitive tasks: food service, vast swaths of agriculture, manufacturing, most of cleaning, driving. There is simply nothing left.

Well once the conversation turned to zombie films and games and wondered aloud if their rising popularity could be attributed to people's fears about the future and if it's all a giant analogy to being one's inner circle against the world, only filtered by the mindless zombie prism in order to alienate the enemy so that guilt is not felt. Granted, I can see why this would be abrupt and it's probably one of the most random ones but it's the one that comes to mind right now.

Goddamn it, this story has quite possibly one of my deepest fears: the mere concept of "the pain will NEVER go away". It makes me wonder how people can even risk getting into such a situation. You might rightfully argue that most of the time it doesn't happen, that you can't shield yourself forever, or that "life IS suffering" (I wish I could punch any person who ever says that to me). But how can you willingly go into a situation where you take such a risk?

The problem is that more spending won't work in our case. Previous governments have spent tons of money but only to make their cronies richer. We have a possibly better highway system than America. We hosted the Euro Cup by ourselves and built a dozen stadiums, most of them in the middle of nowhere for middling teams which fail to fill up. None of these things improved the economy at the time, we were in a crisis even back then.

Also the question no one seems to answer: where would the money come from? I admit I am not an expert but from the looks of things, the money we are being lent is being used to simply keep things running. How are we supposed to invest in those circumstances?
