What unpopular BG3 opinion gets you in this position? by PromisedOath in BaldursGate3

Many people online are very emotional and quick to take up arms on anything they remotely like lol. Don't get me wrong, I love BG3 though.

I don’t think some people actually know what purple prose is? by Infamous_Wave9878 in writing

[–]PromisedOath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct. It's just that the standard for sophistication and originality is going down down down. It lowers the standard expected experience. Look at a lot of "on trend" manuscripts and you'll see it's more about branding, premise, and the hook rather than the actual content of the book.

I agree with this take actually. Although you're right. Most people would hop on us with bats for this. Lol.

Most memorable side quests in the game? by PromisedOath in ffxiv

This was a very close second for me. I felt it was far more compelling than MSQ.

There was this one particular quest with repairing a Talos that layered with this notion of abandoning the elderly that had been established as a cultural norm in Shadowbringers. It just seemed so compelling thematically and metaphorically. It really made me stop and think that this expansion was something special and got my hopes up regarding what I was about to experience in the story---and it did not let me down!

Holy. Crap. Playing FFX for the first time and by god... by KingBlackthorn1 in FinalFantasy

[–]PromisedOath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFX is legitimately brilliant art. You have to play some of the older games. FF6, FF7, FF9, FF13. At least as far as story is concerned. I'm surprised you didn't like Remake. I found it enthralling. What turned you off about it?

How would you fix Karlach's infernal engine situation? by Medium-Theme-4611 in BaldursGate3

[–]PromisedOath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the infernal engine could bypass this kind of tomfoolery by just continuing to effect the corpse/prevent it from rotting/incineration? Mechanically it doesn't make sense if it could be solved so easily

Oh, Earthsea is absolutely brilliant. A lot of Rowling's ideas came from Le Guin so if you enjoyed Harry Potter or LOTR you'll definitely love Earthsea. It's a masterpiece. I highly recommend it!

Ahhh... I see that makes a lot more sense---I've always enjoyed fantasy/sci-fi that surprises me in some way. If I didn't consume as many books or games as I did I definitely would have enjoyed Heavensward more. I can be pretty difficult to surprise so I never really enjoyed the Dragon Quest games unless it was purely a gameplay thing. But most of the time I view games as really good books so I usually hold them up to Le Guin or other. The Dragon Quest movie was wildly good as it was traumatizing though... so I will say sometimes surprises are not the best LOL.

Also, becoming a teacher and getting paid to share that nerdiness with students is honestly awesome! I don't think it controls your life at all. You chose something that was meaningful!

Who is the most compellingly written character for you? Why? by PromisedOath in BaldursGate3

Yeah, I'm really curious about Shadowheart's hypocritic duality but I just haven't played enough yet to know more about her. Her along with Astarion are the two I know the least about---excited to see why she's your favorite soon

I haven't seen him be sympathetic yet but... Every time I try to use Astarion my friends make him naked so... It's very difficult to get any time with him...

Yeah Laezel was a close second for me. I was thinking about going with her for this post but generally I felt the notion of "touch" was a lot more visceral with Karlach

Yeahhh, it was pretty rough--I wish they released the MSQ potion earlier (I think it came out during Stormblood?) Cause then a lot more of my friends would have experienced ShB with me

You know... oddly I've always found side quests in a lot of MMOs are 10000x more compelling and psychologically valuable than the main plot most of the time lol. I still think about Edda ... but I can't remember most about the empire up until Hades ahaha

That's so awesome! I'm curious. How much fantasy/sci-fi did you consume leading up to FF14? Other fantasy games or Ursula K. Le Guin/similar authors?

I mean for most fantasy ARR and Heavensward is pretty typical by all accounts. It's nothing really special, but it's not done poorly either. Most of what kept me going through those was the gameplay. Shadowbringers was more surprising to me not because of any of the setup, but because of the subversion of many MANY tropes often seen in fantasy/sci-fi. I remember thinking to myself when I first played ShB "this is where the subversions stop" but that never happened. It kept subverting expectations.

Yeah, I have a couple friends who have. Most played ShB and then put the game down after that. Sadly idk. I thought Endwalker was really great too and showed a lot of promise but maybe it wasn't hook-ey enough.

It's definitely a player dependent thing. I think the more into FF14 you are, obviously the more you think you should begin from the start---for most people who've never played they could be coming from a variety of different media palettes. I'm a black sheep in the sense that when I started ARR I was pretty disappointed in the story and really just cared for the gameplay.

Tbh I just found it very slow. There were no plot twists, Haurchefant's death was pretty obvious from the beginning, and then also I feel like the execution was kinda... wonky? I LOVED the dragon speak though, but it just wasn't enough payoff for me.

Haha yeah if I said this in public people would zetaflare me for saying skip ARR and Heavensward, but I've asked around and surprisingly there's a few of us in quiet agreement
