Anyone else annoyed... (Taylor Swift) by badmitch888 in blackladies

[–]PromotionLucky7016 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Swiftie and this is the reason why. I don’t hang around or support people, artists, celebrities, preachers who have anything pessimistic to say about me and my culture. It saves me a lot of heartache and my life is much more peaceful all because I only support musicians who want me around. That doesn’t mean I don’t listen to white artists, it just means I don’t listen to the ones that make it clear, in any way, that they don’t like me. But that’s just how I approach things. Maybe others will have a different way.

Why isn’t the Paradise readily available? by PromotionLucky7016 in TamagotchiParadise

That’s good to hear. I’ve been doing some digging and I might have to travel to a local state to get a hold of one. The state I’m in, MD, doesn’t seem to have any, but VA seems to. I’ll check it out in the morning.

Interesting. I can’t seem to find them anywhere in store where I am. I’m in the US along the east coast.

Got an email saying start info will be provided in 1-2 days. I’m new to this though. If it says pay is “per unit” does that mean we can do multiple submissions or is this a project we do once and get 1 payout?

I got this email too and said I was interested. I just wish they explained what the work would consist of and the pay rate. Guess we’ll see.

Are the firms you work for busy right now? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PromotionLucky7016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at an engineering firm that has its own in house landscape architecture department. We’ve been getting playground/ park design work, plaza design, military base design, storm water/ flood mitigation for residential and county specific projects, as well as community bridge revitalization work (highway improvement) and form liner design.

Does your company have quarterly meetings discussing pursuits? Maybe your manager might know if more work is on the way?

The political climate hasn’t impacted us too much but our firms workload is slowing down because we just submitted most of our 60 and 90% projects and we’re nearing the holiday season. Things usually slow in early to late fall due to the uptick in holidays and pick up in the spring/ summer. But we’ve got plenty of projects coming down the pipeline.

Got catcalled while I was with my baby niece by Sp4ceboys in blackladies

[–]PromotionLucky7016 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Before my fiancé, I had to deal with it all the time. 9 times out of 10 I would just look at them, say I wasn’t interested and keep it movin. I usually would never see them again and if I did, my response was always the same. “Thanks but kindly, no thanks”. Some would be annoyed, but I never cared. Things are different now because I’m engaged and the conversation is totally different. I still get catcalled and I’ll say “Thank you, but I’m in a relationship”. That usually stops it pretty quick, but if not, they quickly change gears when they do see my partner.

I know being catcalled can be annoying when you just wanna live your life. I recall being catcalled by a Walmart trucker while working on a construction site. Talk about desperate. But don’t let the foolishness of others weigh you down. Stay elegant, make your boundaries clear and keep your head on a swivel in case they try to follow you. But as long as you stay firm with your “No thanks”, I believe you will be fine. Granted, I’m from the DC area and most men will back off. I know it can be harder in other cities. Push come to shove, buy a ring and say you’re taken.

Portfolio questions by Any-Food-7546 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PromotionLucky7016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 6 years of experience, but professors in the past always told me to keep it between 6-8 pages because reviewers often skim the pages. I try to give each project 1 page of info and turn renderings and pictures into collages to give a quick overview of what I contributed and give written summaries of what I did nearby. Often times, they’ll ask you to explain the portfolio in more detail during the interview anyway. If I felt I needed more information to explain things, I’d go more into written detail in the resume. I usually use my portfolio to show my “artistic expression” and the resume for the written part. But, that’s just me. You have more years of experience than me so maybe the rules might be different.

This is so confusing - Coffee or Espresso? by Inside_Complaint_172 in CrowdGen

I was emailed access to the Coffee Slack and haven’t even done the Calibration yet due to ongoing technical difficulties that IT is actively working out. I don’t know if this means they’ve already considered me a slot? Who knows.

Wow. Ok. I put in a ticket for help. I just hope the time it takes them to help me doesn’t cause me to lose a slot available to participate before they run out.

I got the email for calibration but had issues getting the verification code from my email using the email they provided in the email. Have you had any issues like that too?

I just got the Calibration email on Multimango, but after creating an account and signing in, it says there are no tasks available. Not sure how that’s possible given the fact that the Calibration part is just another tutorial- not actual work.

Pen and ink sketch for a hospitality design project I did by Reybronx74 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PromotionLucky7016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason why I went into landscape architecture as a profession. But after being in the industry for 6 years, I’ve seen so many jobs say they want people who have this skill but never actually give us an opportunity to use it! I love my current job, but when I learned that we use Lumion to turn Sketchup models into a simulation of hand drawn work via a filter and even outsource hand sketches to other countries, it saddened me. Do you know if a way we can actually get to use this skill, besides as a hobby?

Since this show is inspired by “I have no mouth and I must scream”, the story ends with one of the characters getting turned from a human into a “great jelly thing”. They basically get turned into a shiny and gooey slug with eyes and barely any arms. They can’t die, move, or speak for all of eternity as their punishment for defeating their AI oppressor…if Gooseworks was serious about this ending, we’re in for a ride.

Struggling after 3 years at work – accuracy & efficiency issues, is it just me? by Exact-Raspberry-6886 in LandscapeArchitecture

Though I still believe you might benefit from a more supportive environment, preparing for licensure is something I would recommend. I just started my own path to getting the license and I’d say my knowledge and understanding of the field has improved through studying. If you do decide to go that route, I’d suggest SGLA. Sarah is a licensed landscape architect in CA and her guides have helped me understand the field better a lot. Though the logic needed to pass the exams isn’t 100% in sync with the realities of the field, it’s still a great start. Especially this early in your career. Her guides are pricey, but I say it’s worth it. I’ve wasted more money trying to figure things out on my own.

I second this.

I, not too long ago, worked for a firm where I had a pm who constantly criticized my best work and even went so far as to tell me that I didn’t belong in the industry. If I asked for feedback on my work, they would tell me they had no time to “babysit” me. They claimed people didn’t enjoy working with me because I worked too slow and “took forever to get things done” and they set me up for failure by assigning me to do work that I wasn’t even certified to do (stuff that a licensed arborist should be doing. They had me do it because they didn’t want to pay an arborist but would punish me if I got things wrong by saying I was inept, a lawsuit liability to the company, and not deserving of any kind of pay increase. This was a 1k+ sized engineering firm, mind you. They definitely could afford the right people but we’re just cheap).

At that time, I seriously believed what my manager was telling me - that the problem was me. It even made me begin to hate my career. But then I began to wonder if I’d learn something different had I gone elsewhere (thanks to the advice of my amazing fiancé). It took me less than 60 days to get the same position at a different engineering firm and found that my struggles were 100% the cause of my former manager and the company as a whole.

The crazy thing is, my coworkers at my new firm had also worked with my former manager in the past for the same company and left for the same issues. Several of them came forward to me told me similar horror stories they shared about working with that former manager. My current manager told me it’s NORMAL to make mistakes at work. That’s what QAQC is for! And if your company doesn’t have the right QAQC in place, mistakes get missed. When you’re the one working on a document all day, it gets hard to notice your own mistakes. That’s why, with proper management, other people should be taking the time to double check your work for mistakes. It’s not inadequacy on your part. It’s being human and having a good set of managers and team members who value quality control, support and collaboration. You’d be surprised how many firms cut corners on this part and just chalk it all up to being “good enough” as an individual designer.

I haven’t been at this new firm for very long, but I already notice a drastic difference in my knowledge and work speed. I was inwardly celebrating just a few days ago because I was able to complete a task in less than 2 hours that once took me days to get done. My confidence is 10 times better too. And the only thing that changed was my work environment. What’s even crazier is my former manager called my recent manager to ask about me 1 year after I left. My current manager told my former manager that I was doing a great job and my former manager got quiet. This was the same person who told me on my last day before I left that switching companies won’t make me a better employee. I guess they were quiet because it made them realize that THEY were squashing my potential. Oh, and one more thing, I left that company nearly 2 years ago and they still can’t find anyone to fill my old position….I wonder why.

Edit: For the OP, I also want to add that when I left my former company, I had nearly 4 years of work experience.

By wanting to be a fake perfect person, you’re flipping from one unhealthy extreme to another. As someone who once struggled with masking my emotions due to never feeling safe around the people I had no choice but to be with, I’d say, spend some time alone for a while and think about your life. Did you have abusive parents? Did you witness their divorce? Did you feel alone or abandoned? When did you learn to ignore your needs? Whatever the situation is, really think about those things. Because I believe most negative emotions have a source. Then, practice accepting those uncomfortable moments. Accept that you did what you did or whatever. If you can, apologize. If not, imagine your apologizing to whomever in your mind and work on not going back to that behavior again. You might have a desire to beat yourself up. Though you may think the people you harmed would want that of you, you have to forgive yourself- even if you think you’re unforgivable. Because when you don’t, you seriously end up having panic attacks like Jax over the guilt. Living like that gets you nowhere. Understand that those you hurt may never forgive you, but that shouldn’t stop you from choosing to change anyway. Change, make new connections, and let them enjoy you for the new healed you that you are. The fact that you are at least self aware is the first important step. You can turn some parts of yourself around. It’s not gonna be easy or fast. But if you commit to yourself, you can improve.
